College Football 2011

Longest opener ever a triumph over tradition for my relatively youthful alma mater: USF 23 Notre Dame 20 at South Bend, with a couple of severe (and severely endless) lightning delays that probably made the Bulls feel very much at home.

Not that it should be much of a surprise after watching them the past few years, but it was extremely satisfying to see Boise State kick ass against a ranked BCS Conference team on the road*.

New York City:
The NCAA announced today that all major college football teams will be realigned into three major conferences. They will be called Oceania, Eastasia and Eurasia, and with the independent team with the best record, will play for the national championship.

Details on how Boise State will not be part of the National Championship chase are still being worked out.
The change will take effect starting in 2015.

The problem here is the same one as what the Catholic church ran into - and not just because we're talking about similar crimes.
It's that the first instinct, the over-riding instinct, and in most cases the only instinct of those in charge was to 'protect the brand', in this case PSU football and its holy father Joe Pa. Helped out by the fact that the university exists in its own world out there (almost as far from large towns and any adversarial media as one can get in this part of the country) and that the football team exists in its own world within that world, I suspect most of them thought the story would either stay under wraps forever or never blow up this way even if the facts were to come to light.
And, hey, it stayed buried for almost a decade already.

That would be YOUR Stony Brook Seawolves, 2011 Big South Conference champs, somewhere in the middle of that photo.

So thrilled for these guys, and for our students. We wanted this badly.

No doubt it's not the players fault, but it would be best if Wisconsin trounces them next week and Penn State declines any bowl invitations. I assume they are playing out the schedule for reasons of competitive integrity, given how unseemly it is that they continue to operate their football program.

For the players' benefit, I would imagine this sort of scenario will lead to the NCAA waiving the typical restriction that a player has to sit out a season if they want to transfer.

At minimum the NCAA should waive those restrictions each time coaches who lure kids to a school skip off to another job without penalty or restriction (and often in the middle of a contract). But I think they're afraid of even creating an appearance of setting a precedent to the point where I expect them to be very leery of setting anyone "free" and if they navigate a way to get a new staff installed soon after this one ends and sell it as a fixed situation I suspect they will.

Are you kidding? The networks do.
Aside from the revenue, it would make for some memorable television.

Picture this:
PSU trailing at half time.
The cameras follow the coach into the locker room.
And he gives a thrilling speech, exhorting the team to "Win one for the Groper".

Re: College Football 2011

I'm going out on a limb here to guess that guys who run bowls - even the ones who haven't yet been indicted for skimming off the top for personal gain and political/business influence and who routinely require fans who buy regular season tickets to that stadium to also purchase Bowl tickets even though that game probably won't include their team - aren't going to be too skittish about asking a sullied program to their party, especially one which happens to be a huge network favorite with an enormous fan base who, as the saying goes, 'tend to travel well' (aka: show up in large numbers no matter the location).

Besides, if they steered clear of every team under a cloud they'd be stuck with Dartmouth vs Hopkins or something.
PSU might pull themselves out of going to one but I don't think it's going to be for a lack of invites.

What happens is simple: colleges get groups of large men together, put them in matching shirts, and then send them out to play football against other colleges.

And I was a little surprised by the Big South jump a few years ago too, but it was/is a step up in competition level, and gets us a little more national exposure.

Would have been nice if ESPN had pronounced Jackolski right, but a W's a W, especially when it comes at the expense of Albany. HUGE game-saving interception in the end zone with less than a minute to seal the win. Seawolves hit the road to face top-ranked Sam Houston State in the second round of the FCS playoffs next weekend.

Re: College Football 2011

When Heisman voters are considering who is the best player in colege football this year, they should check out that throw by the Baylor QB for the winning touchdown vs Oklahoma. It was one of the best throws I've EVER seen in watching football for over 50 years. EVER. At any level.

With eight seconds to go and the ball on the Oklahoma 34 yard line, he was flushed out the pocket and rolled left. From near the left sideline, he threw a rope across the field to the far right corner of the end zone just as his receiver was breaking free from the drfender. The ball hit him right in the hands for the winning touchdown. That ball travelled at least fifty yards with pinpoint accuracy. And it seemed it got there in a nanosecond.
The quarterback, Robert Griffin III (RG III) has put up some gaudy numbers this year, but this throw showed me he isn't a "system" quaterback. He's just good.

My NFL team will most likely be picking a QB with a top 5 pick next year. I got to watch Luck, Barkley, RGIII and Russell Wilson yesterday. Griffin disappointed me, Luck will most likely be a Colt and Barkley looked unstoppable. Wilson has all of the skills of a NFL QB, but I think he is just going to be too short to compete in the NFL. I'm on the Barkley bandwagon after last night.

Big sharp spikes tearing into the sacred sod? It should be very cathartic.

I remember attending a college game at YSII a looong time ago. BU beat Grambling (yes, BU not only had a football team, they also won).

It's not setting foot in the stadium that's the problem. I wouldn't do it for the simple reason that buying tickets to these minor bowl games just encourages their continued existence if not flat-out expansion.
Then toss on top of that the fact that laying out money for this particular bowl game plays into the idea that the MFY brand-name is worthy of patronage.

I hear you FK, but the concept of seeing Rutgers in a bowl game, even a crappy minor bowl game, in a venue that doesn't require travel was too much of a temptation for me.

Re: College Football 2011

At least it's a (semi) day game and not some "prime-time" / made-for-TV 8:30-ish deal which won't end until midnight in the dead of winter in the north-east at an outdoor stadium -- although even a 3:20 sked time (who knows when they'll actually kickoff) means no seats in the sun and most of the game plus the return travel in the dark ... in the dead of winter ... in the north-east ... at an outdoor stadium.

And while we're on the subject of college football, I saw this note in the agate type this morning:

Notre Dame QB Dayne Crist has received permission to talk with other schools about transferring for his final year of eligibility.
The next step would be for Crist to ask to be released from his scholarship. He is scheduled to graduate in December.

btw, he's been benched since opening week.

So let me get this straight; not only is this dude not playing where he's at now but is going to graduate in the next few weeks and yet that school retains the power through next year (and presumably forever) to deny him both the ability to go somewhere else and play as well as just the right to talk to other places about doing so?!!?

Shouldn't the phrase "Fuck You" enter into this somewhere?

Real or Phony: A Bowl Game Quiz:

Half of the following are actual names for this year's Bowl games and half are not.
Can you tell the difference? (answers at the end of this post)

A - Belk Bowl
B - Beef O'Brady's Bowl
C - Domino's Pizza Bowl
D - Doritos Bowl
E - Bridgeport Education Bowl
F - Avis Rent-a-Car Bowl
G - Franklin American Mortgage Bowl
H - TaxSlayer.com Bowl
I - Your Mortgage Bank Bowl
J - Dick's Sports Bowl

Other Bowl Facts:
- There are 35 bowl games this year ... yes, I said 35

- 14 of the 70 teams involved have records which are .500 or below and several of the games match teams where neither has a winning record.

- Games occurring after January 1st = 12

- Games occurring on January 1st = 0

- There are two bowl games being played at the building known as the Cotton Bowl but neither one will be 'The Cotton Bowl'. That one is still being played but it's being played elsewhere.

Answer to the Quiz: A, B, E, G, H are real.

Re: College Football 2011

This morning while chatting with my husband about the Heisman, I said I wondered what ever happened to Brady Quinn (third runner up in his year), b/c I felt so bad about how he was so anticipating an high draft pick that year and it didn't happen (how embarrassing) and he said maybe I should google him, so I did:

In August 2011, Quinn was once again named third on the depth chart, behind Orton and Tebow. In Week 5, Tebow entered the game against the San Diego Chargers at half time in place of Orton, and Tebow has started every Broncos game since, with Quinn remaining on the bench. Orton was released November 22 and Quinn is now the 2nd String.

BTW, I did find out he is a cousin of one of the kids on Home Improvement.
