Re: IGT--Mets @ Cardinals, 09/22/11

Source: Sox made play for Mets’ Capuano
Their wild card lead evaporating, the Red Sox are on the hunt for reinforcements, even if only for a game, in an attempt to make the playoffs.

According to a source with knowledge of the talks, the Red Sox have spent the better part of a week trying to pry left-handed starter and West Springfield native Chris Capuano from the New York Mets for cash in order to start on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

However, it appears the Mets will keep Capuano, who is 11-12 with a 4.47 ERA. Capuano is playing on a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

Capuano would not be eligible for the postseason with the Red Sox, but he’d be able to help them over the final week of the regular season as they struggle to get quality starts out of a rotation that’s as big a culprit as any for the team’s 5-16 slide in September.

Capuano, a Cathedral grad, was an All-Star with the Brewers in 2006 before undergoing a pair of Tommy John surgeries on his elbow, which sidelined him for the entire 2008 and 2009 seasons. He has returned this year to strike out 155 in 175.1 inning and would have given the team a boost in the series finale at New York, particularly since the Yankees hitters are unfamiliar with him and would have little opportunity to advance scout him.

I wonder why Sandy wouldn't part with him?

Re: IGT--Mets @ Cardinals, 09/22/11

Capuano is not under contract beyond next week so why not get something for nothing? Perhaps Sandy is planning on resigning Capuano and doesn't want him to possibly fall in love with Boston (which is doubtful since it's only for a week and they're on the road).

That was my first thought. Then again, you're only going to get crap back for it, so why bother?

Or maybe he asked Capuano, and he didn't want to go.

This will likely be the last time in 2011 I'll take an interest in the weather there.

I wonder if he'd be more motivated to play if he knew he was in the running for his first ever Schaefer POTM award?

Doesn't sound like we're playing ball for a while yet.
But, being the last week of the season and the Cards being in the mix, they're going to try like hell to get it it.
And ... wait for it ... they see a window!!

Howie is talking about how Cardinals fans are "condescending" toward New York for allegedly ignoring St. Louis. Another reason to love Howie.

Howie says that the fans in St. Louis don't have the passion that east coast fans have so they don't get criticized or cheered the same way. He says that there's "no soul" there.

Excellent diving catch by Mike Baxter keeps Cards' lead at 4-1, prevents Braves from protesting Mets' use of Ryota Igarashi.

Wow!
Had stuff to do earlier so I recorded the back half of that game and just finished watching it via delay. Was considering giving up a few times but hung with fortunately.
Gotta like that we won a game after our first three runs were 'driven in' by walks & WPs before actual hits kicked in in the 9th.

And for all the fans who constantly complain about how we always get beat by scrubs & no-names*, consider that the Cardinals just had their season effectively killed by Ruben Tejada & Willie Harris.

* something which, in truth, the fans of all 30 teams complain about while also thinking it's something unique to their team

Re: IGT--Mets @ Cardinals, 09/22/11

Plus a walk and a run and a big catch by Jason Pridie. A pinch-hit walk and RBI and run by Turner. Igarashi bailed out the Cap with a runner on third in the fifth and pitched a scoreless sixth.

Wright? Whiffed with the bags juiced in the ninth.

Re: IGT--Mets @ Cardinals, 09/22/11

The other fun thing is that after LaRussa moved to his 'defense' lineup in the late innings he wound up in the 9th without Berkman (sked to leadoff but double-switched out) followed by several of the lesser hitters in there for their glove-work.
Plus the glove guy in LF still couldn't catch up to Tejada's ball.

Not that they were wrong moves necessarily, only that they wouldn't have been made (at least not in such wholesale quantity) had there not been expanded rosters and that they came back to bite him in the ass when his hurlers couldn't get the ball over the plate.
