Delmon Young with a cheap MFY-Stadium homer to right gives the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first.

MFYs already getting lucky to tie it as Rogers reaches on a WP strike 3 and scores after the the Tigers screw up a force play and elect not to throw him out at home. 1-1

2nd and 3rd, nobody out for the MFYs to start.

Not a problem for Amigos de los Tigres, when those two are catchers who run like it. No runs across. (Fisted!)

Oct 01 2011 09:15 PM
Re: I.S.T. Tigers vs. MFYs

This Fister guy looked good for a while (Fister? I hardly even know her!) but as soon as Russell Martin hit the typical one-out/two-on Yanqui dribbler that's too slow & shitty to be turned into a DP (so now it's 2nd & 3rd instead of out of the inning) I got a bad feeling.
Fister then had the next three hitters 0-2 but failed to get any of them out even though none hit the ball particularly well (2RBI single, single, walk). Then came the almost predictable Grand Slam.
Could have been no runs that inning, instead it was six.

So now not only are the Yanx up 1 game to none but they did so by winning the game which Verlander started without having to actually face Verlander.

4-0 bottom 7 although the no-hitter is gone on a Cano broken bat bloop (there may be left-fielders slower than Delmon Young but you'd have to do a pretty thorough search before you found one).

Perhaps the best part was - right after the usual booth talk about Jeter being clutch and all in October - he grounds out with two-on to end the inning then starts the next one with a throwing error which led to the 3rd & 4th run.

Scherzer still throwing.

- Oooooh, lots of oh-fers for Jetes with RiSP this series. Not that that inconvenient truth will find its way into any network "facts" in the near future.

- I'd have been REAL tempted to stick w/Verlander in the 9th, especially with Valverde having thrown so many pitches the night before, and double especially since you're not go to use Verlander again in this round unless there some emergency Game 5 relief needed.

- Smoltz (who I really like the handful of times I've caught him doing games) had the call of the night when he said; 'watch out for the first pitch' right before Delmon launched that first pitch into the RF stands. He was right on top of Valverde consistently missing "arm side" with his pitches too, and said so after just the first two he threw.

- that fly out from Russell Martin in the 9th is 7 rows deep in YSIII ... or maybe more like 10

- and, finally, those 14 words all Yanqui fans dread to hear: 'Your season is on the line and it's in the hands of AJ Burnett'

Sure, it's just that I saw ball jump in that direction off a Yanqui bat in the ninth inning of a one-run game following a walk and immediately I had an 'OH SHIT' moment before I remembered where the game was being played.

First may have been aided in overall goodness by a poor first-step decision but still was outstanding athletic play anyhow on a ball that was crushed. If there's one thing MFY fans won't stand for, it's a damn dirty unnecessary delay, especially one born of an extraneous mound visit.

Why'd he bail on Scherzer so quick? Jeets reached on a slow rolling infield single.

'Cuz that's what managers do. They flip over pitchers compulsively in the seventh.

Re: I.S.T. Tigers vs. MFYs

My father is from Detroit and is a Tiger fan so I went along with him tonight for some good schadenfreude. There is a whole sociological study just waiting to be done regarding the House of Evil during a game like this but I'll share the key observations:

1. I've never heard so much profanity over a prolonged period of time. You wouldn't hear 15% of what we heard if you watched 3 Sopranos episodes in a row;
2. These have to be some of the worst fans in baseball, turning on their own players in an instant;
3. My father asked if he needed to take off his hat when walking out. When it was clear that A-Rod was going to be the last out, we quickly realized there would be plenty of misdirected anger and no worries.

Re: I.S.T. Tigers vs. MFYs

Great for Gdad.

For me that sequence in the 4th? when Arod was held at 3rd on the single and Martin/Gardner popped out was the Dodge Turning Point of the Game. I know the MFYs would have more chances (and the Tigers would get bigger outs) but most nights they'd have managed to turn that deal into a wild pitch, an error, a cheap single and a three-run homer and been leading 6-2 or 7-2 going to the 5th.

Re: I.S.T. Tigers vs. MFYs

Yhat's the thing. The seventh had all that crap, but not the homer.

When Derek Jeter's Yankees were winning their first championship in 1996, the Tigers were losing 109 games under Bubby Bell.

When Alex Rodriguez was engineering his trade from Texas to the Yankees ("Don't retreat --- reload!"), the Tigers were coming off a 119-loss season under Alan Trammell.

Let's hope the page is turned and all that karma is transferred over. Long live the city of Detroit. Let's hope they win, Dave Bing cries, nobody riots, and 50-Cent is as far away from the proceedings.

Re: I.S.T. Tigers vs. MFYs

here's a reprint from a post i made at the old forum, after a yankee playoff loss (i forget against whom):

to those who don't understand a Mets fan's joy in this Yankee loss...

It is a blow against The Ubermensch. It is a strike back against the lockstep, jackbooted minions of the machine, pouring money into a bottomless, soulless maw while turning the crank that says, "win"... just "win", and nothing else will do.

It is a victory for those who find nobility in the struggle alone, knowing ultimate victory is an illusion, out of one's control, except for the effort required to be ready should it come.

It allows me to walk down the street now, without having to hear how the Yankees showed heart, and grit, and determination, in their miraculous 9th inning comebacks. As if they were somehow UNDERDOGS.

If another franchise had managed those 2 consecutive 9th inning comebacks, they'd have a right to crow about it, whether they won the series or not. Great accomplishment, after all. But when your team's entire persona, raison d'etre, etc. is based ENTIRELY on how many "rings" they've got... well, the irony is Yankee fans will be loathe to mention those 2 comebacks because ULTIMATELY, the Yankees lost. And that is simply unacceptable in the land of Monument Park.

Now, if you're a Red Sox fan, you can champion Fisk's homer as a moment of greatness, despite having dropped the `75 series to the Reds. Cuz Sox fans have learned, if nothing else, how to find value in baseball ASIDE from winning and losing. No Yankee fan can understand that idea. No Yankee fan can understand the sheer joy of being a true underdog, and fighting against enumerable odds to persevere.

After all, what kind of personal character does it take to root for an indomitable winner? Where is the ennobling and humbling forge of loss in their lives?
Yankee fans will never know the spiritual bliss of slaying a dragon. Because they cheer for the dragon.
and today, the dragon is dead.
and there shall be much rejoicing throughout the land.
and i feel sorry for those who don't understand it.
