Nine Games Left

Before the long cold winter.

Fuck the pennant races. They're overrated anyway. Tell me what you want to see before 2011 is put to bed.

We all want to see Reyes win the batting title and for someone to beat Beltran's 15 HR mark. But what else?

I'd like to see them sweep the Phillies and let them know that next year is going to be different.

I want to see Lucas Duda hit 4 more HR's.

anything, as long as it's baseball. Would be nice to see Duda finish above .300 and Bay get at least 5 more XBHs.

Re: Nine Games Left

Them's all would be good.

I'd like to see them avoid a sub-.500 record.

Beato or Parnell blazing some team away in the ninth would be cool.

I'd like to see Josh Satin have a wicked game or two. He's almost perfectly redundant with Turner, but it would nice to establish him as a major league talent. He kind of looks like Ike Davis's brother, too. Let's get a photo of them together for Jewish Wear Daily.

Wally Backman tossed from a game would be good and bad.

A complete game by Pelfrey.

A shitkicking by Bay.

Reyes steals home.

No hitter.

I feel like we've built this thing up so much that I'd rather it come in a super relevant context, but maybe it'd be appropriate for it to happen when only like 7 die-hard Mets fans are actually watching.

I'll go with the no-hitter - that would be a nice way to close out the season.

Let's keep it practical , we're the Mets, we don't do no hitters.

My Mets predictions, from the 2011 thread:

1. Where they will finish in the NL East. 4th

currently tied for 4th with Nats

2. What the final record will be. 76-86

currently 73-80

3. If you predict a wild card spot, say so. Nyet
4. If you predict a playoff appearance, how far will they go? nowhere

yeah, got those covered.

so i'm hoping they do better than 3-6 in the last nine, and finish ahead of the Nats, to exceed my expectations, such as they were. Isn't that all you can ever hope, that your team exceeds your expectations?

I'm hoping no one else breaks their arms/legs/tendons/anuses in any way that would impact the 2012 season.

Finish in 3d, ahead of those pieces of shit scumbags, the Washington Nationals.

Re: Nine Games Left

My hopes in order would be:

-no injuries
-3rd place finish
-8 wins
-no hitter
-132 more hits for Jose Reyes

Re: Nine Games Left

Hot finishes for guys like Herrera, Duda, Turner and Tejada, both for what they mean in themselves and to increase potential trade value.

And a hot finish for Jason Bay, in the hopes that it will set his mind at ease over the winter and set him up for a strong start next year. (Who knows? It could happen!)

And one more triple for Jose Reyes, in case these are his final days as a Met. His career total is now at 99, and it would be nice to get the club record into triple digits.

good one.

I'll settle for no 0-47 for Bay. 5+ XBH would be nice, but as so would just hitting the ball hard a lot and not looking fooled for any stretch of time.

One game with all three neophyte callups seeing action just so I can write this tongue-twisting headline:

Schwinden! Stinson! Satin!

I don't ask much.

Beyond the 9 games I hope Pelfrey is non-tendered..with prejudice.

That just means more Chris Schwinden to me.

There is roughly zero chance Pelfrey is non-tendered anyway. same with Pagan.

Re: Nine Games Left

I may be wrong, but I think it's higher than zero.

It doesn't seem all that far-fetched for the Mets to determine that they don't want to pay him $6 million next year, if they feel that money can be better spent elsewhere.

I suspect it's more likely that they would seek to trade him, or release him if it turns out that he gets a larger arbitration award than they can tolerate. It makes less sense to cut him loose until you know what he'll be making. It's his salary, not his ability, that would make Pelfrey expendable.

Re: Nine Games Left

Fangraphs pegged his value at $11.5 million in 2010, and $3.7 million thus far in 2011. Give him the benefit of the doubt that he gets that up to $3.9 million by the end of the season and that comes to an average of $7.65 million between the two.

Re: Nine Games Left

Pelfrey will be starting next year. Sure, maybe it's not for the Mets, but he'll be starting. Why would the Mets just let another team have him?

Re: Nine Games Left

They would do it if they felt that his salary was more than they wanted to spend, that's why.

Re: Nine Games Left

they don't have any other options. The closest we got is Schwinden, and I doubt Alderson's seen enough out of him to expect he'll provide the value and innings that that 5million provides.

Re: Nine Games Left

They have until next April to come up with other options. Schwinden's not the only possibility. Sometimes teams get players from outside their organization. It's been known to happen.

and I'm sure they can include Pelfrey in that subset of guys they trade if they get suitable upgrades. But they need pitchers, so I doubt just letting value walk out of the door is part of that plan. Same reason they didn't just release K-Rod when he got to 54.

Re: Nine Games Left

I don't think they let Pelfrey walk, either.

But if Santana's back by the spring, resigning Capuano and letting Pelf walk leaves the Mets with a relatively-inexpensive starting five of Johan, the Duke, the Dickey, Niese, and Gee/Schwinden.

I don't think Cap will be inexpensive. And I think he'll be looking for a two(plus) year deal. Don't know if he'll get it, but I think he's shown himself healthy and able.

I wouldn't mind keeping him though, but ultimately I think I'm hoping Sandy trades for a fairly above average starter. I think he's got some pieces that need to be traded, roster space wise, and he hinted at that yesterday. What do they need more than pitching?

nevermind roughly zero.

Maybe the closer to the end of this season they settle with him, the closer it was to zero?

or could just bet on whether he's tendered on a contract, and leave out my confidence in it.
