Will manage the Fish next year in a trade for Chisox minor leaguer, matching wits with White Jerry.

that's going to be amusing. Ozzie Guillen is a dick, but kinda fun to observe from relatively close.

Re: Ozzie Guillen to Marlins

The Mets traded for Art Howe. And more famously, for Gil Hodges.

Really, he had so much equity in Chicago. How'd he blow it all? And does this foreshadow LaRussa going back to Chicago?

2005 was a long time ago. My guess is that his act got old.

Who's Art Howe?

I have no memory of trading for him.

The [crossout:2zo42kwf]Devil[/crossout:2zo42kwf] Rays traded Randy Winn for Lou Piniella a few years back.

WOW, more common that I would have guessed. Speaking of Lou Piniella, that time he was "certain" to be coming to the Mets IIRC Jose Reyes was going to be sent the other way?

The Mets didn't give up anyone for Howe. I remember Beane trying to cook up some scenario where he could get something back but he had no leverage to make it happen.

By being Ozzie.

And does this foreshadow LaRussa going back to Chicago?

Not sure if that would be the first choice of Kenny Williams after he just got rid of one high-maintenance guy.

There was some compensation, though, wasn't there? Burger King gift certificates or something?

I don't believe so, no.

And how about Howe's last two years in Oakland: 102 & 103 wins and then essentially let go.
No wonder Art/Phillip was so grouchy in the movie.

bbref doesn't apprear to indicate any player transactions with oakland that offseason.

Re: Ozzie Guillen to Marlins

Beane sweetened the pot by throwing in a 60-minute cassette tape of his recorded laughter.

Ozzie apparently had the leverage to price himself out of the Sox/Williams' comfort zone. He and Kenny stopped getting along some time ago also.

Re: Ozzie Guillen to Marlins

IIRC, the Cubs traded their manager to their broadcast team, and the guy came down from the booth to manage the club for the rest of the year. Could have been Charlie Grimm and Lou Boudreau.

I'd like it all better of Ozzie stayed in the AL. The Marlins are fucking annoying enough.

I like Guillen in Miami more than I would have liked Valentine in Miami.

I think the deal with the Mets and the A's for Art Howe involved Oakland saying, "Please take him."

But they're losing Moist-Shitbox Stadium, and the new one's a question mark in terms of the annoyance-numbers it'll bring to their product lineup. Guillen represents a smart hedging of their new-place bet.

Also, having him boss Hanley and Logan Morrison around could be HEE-larious.

If Hanley feeds of his new managers persona then he'll be an even bigger wanker.

Oh, I see them clashing. Hanley being asked to bunt. Refusing. Ozzie calling him a macaque in the press. Stuff like that. We'll see.

It's not like the A's improved in his absence, although I think/hope the loss of Alderson had more to do with Beane's subsequent inability to put together a winner than the loss of Howe.

Speaking of Beane not putting a winning team together in a long time, wouldn't it be funny if he gets fired while the movie is still hot in the box office?

Re: Ozzie Guillen to Marlins

Some good stuff in there

At the end of our conversation — he was in New York to play the Mets — I asked him if he had to fly back to Florida after that night's game. "Yep," he sighed. "Back to the shithole." It was the kind of jab he'd throw on Twitter. No way the front office is gonna shut him up. No, the worst they can do is ban him from the shithole, send him to the minors, and see if anyone still listens to him

Well, we might just wind up with a hole at short. We'll take him.
