Not a lot of times in history have the Mets lost a free 'gent that they were serious about keeping. Mike Hampton comes to mind as one.

I think that he'll leave, but anything is possible. I have a feeling that someone else will offer more cash, years or both...and Jose will go for the business move (as he is certainly entitled to do). It's not my money, so I don't care about that...but I don't want the Mets to offer him any more than a five year contract with an option for a sixth based on durability. If he's offered more years and he wants the Mets to match...no way, no way no way no way...

My vote was "I think that he'll stay." I think they'll come to a deal before anyone else gets a chance to talk to him, during that exclusive negotiating period.

Yeah, maybe it's my life, but I always bet on things staying the same, things staying the same. Meanwhile, he makes a lead-preserving diving stop to end the eighth. What a game!

I think that he would have been gone in July if Alderson didn't think he could sign him. Whether that ultimately means anything or not is an open question, but I'd bet a small amount that he stays.

I have no idea. Just heard on radio that the Judge limited the Wilpons' liability in the lawsuit to under $300 - max. Still don't know what that will do to their ability (or desire) to retain him. Later

"They’ll probably start up within the next few days, but right now everything is quiet," Reyes said, reiterating that he’d like to re-sign with the Mets while adding that "this is a business and we just need to wait and see what happens." From now until five days after the World Series the Mets are the only team able to negotiate with Reyes, but the fact that they haven’t reached out to him yet is ultimately pretty meaningless. There’s almost zero chance of Reyes re-signing before hitting the open market, so while getting the ball rolling on negotiations may have some value it won’t keep the Mets from having to out-bid a bunch of other teams for him once the offers start flying. hoping he'll stay.... mets had some work to do with the managers, so seemed like that was the first thing they're taking care of. would like someone to talk to reyes though, saying, "we're interested, but lots of other housekeeping stuff keeping us busy. we'll work on some numbers and contact you soon." type thing...

Now we know why Braun wouldn't take the often-offered bait and knock Jose for sitting out that final game ... he was buttering him up! SS has been the Brews' biggest weakness this season so thinking about him there shirley makes sense. Who knows about the finances but getting at least two rounds deep in the post-season is a nice kick in the bottom line.

If the Mets do sign him, the next day Major League baseball will probably put his thyroid medicine on the banned substances list. That would be Selig's way of getting back at the Mets if he doesn't sign with the Brewers. Later

On the opposite side of those arguments are that their local media dollars are still low compared to most teams, and part of Fielder's money will have to go into securing a new 1Bman.

No TV ownership/creative alternative-revenue streams means they're still playing at the big-kiddie table, financially.
