Mets v. Newark-Scranton-WB Yankees (split from Big News!)

Edgy MD
Sep 27 2011 10:24 PM

Today's news also had the Mets turning down a $250,000 payment by the Yankees to relocate the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees to Newark for a single season.

Chump change, but it could be read to suggest both the 'Pons and the Bud Selig are confident they're going to come out on the other side of this.

That was actually yesterday's news. And screw the Yanks.

Come on. Whatever. My point isn't the date of the release. My point is what it does or doesn't say about the ongoing control of the regime.

I don't get the machinations on this , why would the MFY's be paying the Mets , what's going on there?

Re: Big News! (update: Mets Minority Stake For Sale)

Probably has to do with territorial rights.

The problem stems from the fact that the stadium at SWB needs major refurbishing/replacement (I forget which) which puts the AAA Yanx into gypsy-hood for next season. One thought, I guess, is to double-up at Trenton, to use that field - already the home of the AA Yanx - for both teams for one year. Trenton, though, is probably considered part of the NYC market to the point where either big league club has veto rights over the introduction of a new team within organized ball.
IOW, 'yeah, we signed off on that AA team but we didn't agree to youse guys having a AA [u:2es44xax]AND[/u:2es44xax] AAA teams in our backyard'.

Nope, Trenton is safe. Mets and Yankees' overlapping territorial rights are for the 5 boroughs, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland and Westchester; Bergen, Hudson, Essex and Union Counties in NJ; and a portion of Fairfield County in CT (that which is South of I-84 and West of Route 58).

Re: Big News! (update: Mets Minority Stake For Sale)

Well in that case I have no idea why the Mets would have a say in or get money for a temporary move of SWB to Trenton.
Maybe Trost, Levine and the Steinbrenner boys are just really nice guys (hey that's a good there FK)

is that being discussed? Do the two separate leagues, neither or which is under any obligation to the Yankees, talk enough to manage those conflicting schedules? I've heard they're more likely to go north to Rochester or something. which cuts on Bisons travel.

Good job by the Mets though.

"Then I called back - because I hadn't heard from them - and was specifically told that in exchange for a one-year waiver in Newark, they would demand territorial rights (for a minor league franchise) in either Long Island or Connecticut," Trost told the Daily News on Tuesday.

Seems fair to me. Especially considering while Trenton is outside the metro area, it's just as close to tons of Mets fans like me living in North Jersey (and pretty much all of Jersey)

Oh, I see, it's [u:fpa2db24]Newark[/u:fpa2db24] the Yanx are looking at not Trenton so the territorial rights thingy does kick in.
I misread the earlier reference - mainly because I'm forever conflating all those NJ cities.

As part of their agreement with each other, Major League clubs have the right to block other Major League clubs from moving into their neighborhood. This extends to affiliated minor league clubs.

I don't like this agreement at all.

Yabbut they have to exercise their right or they won't deserve to have it.

MFY Stuffed Shirts are trying to make the Mets look bad, according to the Snooze the Mets said they'd grant the 1-year thing if the MFYs would grant the Mets a minor league club on Long Island.

Mets also reportedly favor a deal where MFYs get Westchester and NJ, Mets get LI and Connecticut.

Oh, yeah, I'm certainly not going to give the Mets shit for not martyring themselves by not using rights that any other team would.

Also, this is not the first time. They've been blocking each other for years, and the mayor had to step in the broker the deal for SI/Brooklyn I think.

minor, but the Chris Carter blocked waiver can't help.

Re: Big News! (update: Mets Minority Stake For Sale)

The article implies the Yanks asked to use Newark for 1 year, and the Mets insisted on rights in LI or Connecticut on a permanent basis.

If true, it makes the Mets look a little dick-ish. Though that comes from Lonn Trost, who I am not convinced is telling me the truth.

Re: Big News! (update: Mets Minority Stake For Sale)

Well, if that deal is true, and had been accepted, the Yankees would have gotten New Jersey and Westchester on a permanent basis to go with the Mets' permanent claim on Long Island and Connecticut.

Re: Big News! (update: Mets Minority Stake For Sale)

But the MFYs aren't interested in Newark/NJ beyond what it gets them next year; it's obvious they see their future in Scranton.

If the roles were reversed the MFYs would do the same thing, not to be dicks but to exercise their rights as monopolists lest they lose them.

Re: Big News! (update: Mets Minority Stake For Sale)

there's a minor league ballpark just minutes from my house that's going completely unused...

not that i'd want the yankees to invade my precious sussex county, necessarily, but it would be nice ot have cheap baseball back in town. i'd much much prefer the mets or some non-yankees team to take up residence. long ago it was the cardinals' franchise. then it was independent. now it sit empty and forlorn.

dare i say i would mind less the phillies moving in than the yankees. if only by a slim degree.

Yeah, bad news if you're rooting for Chapter 11.

OTOH, they're still bleeding $$, may still be on the legal hook for up to $300 mills, still owe Selig, still don't have that $200 million that Boy Wonder was gonna give 'em, still have Stadium bonds getting killed by plummeting attendance.

The writer Howard Medgal told me recently that he's got some explosive stuff on how the deal with the hedge fund guy unraveled (basically he called it off when the 'pons proved to him they'd be lousy partners), that still has to play out.

Great. It'll be so anti-climactic, though. Jeff will still be here, for keeps, likely. He'll prolly sack Sandy too so he can make the decisions going forward.

The Yankees have a plan. While the stadium in Scranton undergoes a year-long renovation, the Yankees will use a SIX city rotation next year for triple-A home games.

Rochester, Buffalo, Batavia, Syracuse, Allentown, and Pawtucket.

Happy travels, Costanza.

Ecch. What's worse is how many local YLDBs will come out to support their adopted "home team" who wouldn't normally attend a Syracuse Chiefs game otherwise. Fuck that noise.

Re: Mets v. Newark-Scranton-WB Yankees (split from Big News!

This plan is a few weeks old, and it seems shockingly shortsighted by the Yankees. What a miserable year its going to be for the AAA Yanks. Is it some kind of design to make them all hate the Mets. Why the heck can't they play at Penn State (Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, capacity 5406) or something?

Re: Mets v. Newark-Scranton-WB Yankees (split from Big News!

They could let the team play in the crappy stadium in the Bronx on off days, but Triple-A shortstops would launch dingers in that band box and mystique and aura would be lost.

Could they? I'd imagine the Mets would have the right to block that move also.

Yes, that's correct. No team -- major or affiliated minor league -- can play anywhere in the territorial rights area described earlier in the thread without the consent of both the Yankees and Mets.

I continue to scratch my head on this one. Here's a list of all vacant stadiums they could choose from. Not to mention that SteinYanker Field in Tampa holds 11,000 (but I'd guess the Rays would nix that one).

they gotta stick around central NY or travel would suck.

from that site, a fact I never thought about before. Shea Stadium was the last place to be used simultaneously by two MLB teams.

Due to the fact that most (60 of 72) of the "home" games for the nomadic AAA Yanx will be played inside the borders of NYS (see above list of cities) the once and future Scranton-Wilkes-Barre team (I always thought they should be named the Hyphens) will adopt the name 'The Empire State Yankees' for this year only.

Barfing can commence immediately.
And, yes, 'special' merchandise will be available in the lobby - in fact, it already is.

They missed a golden opportunity to market it as The Ruth and Gehrig barnstorming Yankees and feed fans stories about the days when Ruth and Gehrig wandered around NY playing games.

Because that'd be cool.
