2011 Toy Hall-of-Fame Nominees

What, you didn't know there was a toy HoF and museum?
Yeah, well neither did I. But there is, it was established in 1998 and it's in Rochester, New York. So next time you're in town ...

Here were the original inductees, the Ty Cobbs & Babe Ruths of toys I guess you could say.

Barbie -- Crayola Crayons -- Erector Set -- Etch-A-Sketch -- Frisbee -- Hula Hoop -- Lego -- Lincoln Logs -- Marbles -- Monopoly -- Play-Doh
Radio Flyer wagon -- Roller Skates -- Teddy Bear -- Tinkertoy -- View-master -- Duncan Yo-Yo

The next inductions will take place this November from the below list. Apparently they let like two or three new ones in each year.
The 2011 HoF nominees are:

- The Dollhouse.
Apparently it's not a specific dollhouse but just the concept of the dollhouse in general

- Dungeons & Dragons
I have to admit that I had no knowledge of this game whatsoever until I was an adult and started hearing folks my age wax about it nostalgically. Not sure if that makes me out of it or the opposite.

- Hot Wheels
Never my thing, but I bet Lunchbucket (and probably others) could reminisce for a while.

- Jenga
Used to see TV commercials for it around Xmas time. Don't think I've ever actually seen one up close.

- Pogo Stick
Patented in 1919. I think of it as one of those before-my-time 1950s crazes

- Puppet
Like the dollhouse, this seems to be a generic nomination of all toy puppets

- Radio Controlled Vehicles
These date from the 1940s, but I'm sure got a lot better in later years.

- Rubik's Cube
I actually knew how to solve that thing at one point. Have since forgotten everything I've learned.

- Simon
That beeping memory game where you have to repeat the sound & light pattern

- Star Wars Action figures
I guess either you were or you weren't. One of these days I might even get around to seeing the movie

- Transformers
Unlike D&D, I was a bit old for these which explains why I barely knew they existed even when they were hot and my father was drawing comics about them

- Twister
Fun ... even if for those who were children and sober.

It's housed at the Strong Museum of Play, which is really awesome... moreso if you have young'uns, obviously.

I vote for Twister,

Pogo Stick (I feel like this is a Negro League vote. should've gone in ages ago.)

and Rubik's Cube.

Twister, Simon, Dungeon's and Dragons and RC vehicles to remain on the ballot, or maybe get in via the Veterans committee.

I'll vote for Hot Wheels, Twister, and Rubik's Cube.

As an aside, I took Lunchpail this weekend to the Lego Store in the city and came home with this 174-piece bad boy:

Less than 24 hours later, we'd lost two of those cool finger/claw knives. But I called up Lego and they're sending us new ones. That's Hal of Fame customer service.

Pretty sure FK Sr. did work on the Marvel Comics Star Wars as well...

In fact, let me double check that...

Ahhhhh, no wonder lack of connection, my source tells me he only worked on one issue of the main title as a finisher and inker (in other words...TRACER!), and two issues of a weekly series over in the UK, full art on those.

Forget the Blu Rays and DVD special editions, go with the original recipe if you want to see them for the first time.

Back on topic, sticking with the comic book theme, I'd vote for this trifecta:

Mego's World's Greatest Super Hero line
Kenner's DC Super Powers
Mattel's Marvel Secret Wars

No Chutes-and-Ladders? No jigsaw puzzle? No TRICYCLE?

Boo'ship.

It's hard to believe that The Stick (class of 2008) and The Ball (class of 2009) were not in the inaugural class.

Rumors were that they were on steroids.

Re: 2011 Toy Hall-of-Fame Nominees

Should games be classified as toys?
I demand a clarification.
How did Monopoly get in there?
I mean, In know that "separate but equal" has been struck down by the Supreme Court.
But, shouldn't there be another HOF for just games?

Re: 2011 Toy Hall-of-Fame Nominees

yeah, I don't agree with this vague concept thing. 'dollhouse'? Maybe a specific one..

Can you induct 'dolls' and 'the chuckie doll' for instance?

How does Hot Wheels get in before Matchbox? That's like Hank Aaron getting in before Babe Ruth.

Are you suggesting Matchbox is superior to Hot Wheels?

If so, I'd like a word with you outside.

Yeah. Scrabble (class of 2004) in the toy HOF is just wrong.

Darn right. The BALL??? Spaldeens, wiffle balls, beach balls, and Nerfs easily deserve separate honors.

And the water gun. The water gun needs to be inducted. Political correctness be damned.

Superior? Eh, maybe, maybe not. What I am saying is that Matchbox was first and just as popular if not moreso.

I'll tell you one thing though, I never had a problem with the axles on my Matchbox cars bending after use. Something Hot Wheels was notorious for!

Yabbut Hot Wheels were 'merican racers and hot rods. They were toys. Matchbox were more like stuffy English models.

Re: 2011 Toy Hall-of-Fame Nominees

while i generically refer to them as matchbox cars, i think i preferred hte hot wheels. not that it was an informed decision, its just that i thought they were cooler. what i did know was that majorette was woefully inferior crap, akin to mega blocks.

damn... i wonder if my hot wheel / matchbox collection is still at my mom's house...

i'm pretty sure all my old lego are still there, but the matchbox cars would be awesome as well.

unfortunately, there was a minor inadvertent cull of my fleet way back when, followed by a disatrous cull a few years later.

i was playing with them in the gravel out by the curb, and absentmindedly went away to play with something else, or come in for the day, or whatever. that was in spring time at the exact instant when, for the only time each year, the street sweepers come around to collect all the prior winter's gravel.

and then a few years later, i had stored all of my cars in a brown paper bag. the same type of bag that we'd use for throwing things out. i think you know how the story ends. [sniffle]

but as near as i can recall, i should still have a collection left. unless there was a third cull...

hmm... i really need to visit my mom....

Re: 2011 Toy Hall-of-Fame Nominees

We've had this argument before. Matchbox is superior in every way - materials, detailing, variety and sturdiness. Hot Wheels were crap cars with lots of cheap logos pasted on them. And their axles bent like five minutes after you got 'em out of the box. And American is bullshit. They were made in Malaysia.
