In the haunting final verse to "Night Moves," Bob Seger describes waking to the sound of thunder in the distance. To stave off the creeps and the depression (that's my read --- there's no explicit reference to creeps and depression), he starts "humming a song from 1962." I list here all the Billboard Hot 100 number ones from that year, and ask you to tell me which song he was humming.

Write-ins are welcome (who said he was singing a number one? or even a hit?), but I call BS on any Beatles (or maybe Stones) songs that weren't released in the States until 1964.

No links. You know most of these and no where to find the ones you don't. Strange how I know pretty much every song here (except one, I think) pretty well, but can maybe hum two #1 songs from 2010. Thank you, WCBS.

I'm going with the assumption that Bob was one of Michigan's best surfers, and loved that Telstar sound.

Trying to stave off dark thoughts?

Well, what's better than a graveyard smash?

Humming a song or a No. 1 song? It's Bob Seger, not Casey Kasem.

Since it's an ode to summertime, sweet summertime, I go with Brian Hyland's wistful "Sealed With a Kiss," which hit No. 5 the week of July 14, 1962.

None of the songs listed are particularly hummable. It's like humming the Twilight Zone Theme -- no one does it.
