THE SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year for 2011 is JOSÉ REYES who this year famously (or infamously) won the first National League batting title in Mets history. This is José's first Player of the Year award. (David Wright has been the winner in five of the previous six years, with Johan Santana winning in 2008.) José led the 2011 Mets in the following categories: Games (126), at bats (537), runs (101), hits (181), doubles (31), triples (16), stolen bases (39), batting average (.337), OBP (.384), slugging (.493), OPS (.877), intentional walks (9) and total bases (265).

Reyes finished with almost 30 points more than second-place Carlos Beltran, easily the widest margin in modern Schaefer history.

PITCHER OF THE YEAR
The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Year is first-time winner R.A. DICKEY. R.A. finished strong, winning the Pitcher of the Month award in each of the last three months of the season. In 33 games (and 32 starts) Dickey was 8-13 with a team-best 3.28 ERA in 208.2 innings, also a team high. R.A. has led the Mets in ERA in each of his two seasons with the club. He is the first pitcher to win the award while posting a losing record for the season. Previous winners were Pedro Martinez in 2005, Tom Glavine in 2006 and 2007, and Johan Santana in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Dickey finished nearly 17 points ahead of second-place Chris Capuano, who had only .05 points more than third-place Mike Pelfrey.

RELIEF PITCHER OF THE YEAR
The Mets relief pitcher of the year is rookie PEDRO BEATO. Pedro's 60 games tied for second place on the team (with Bobby Parnell, and behind Tim Byrdak's 72.) He was 2-1 with no saves, and a 4.30 ERA. He is the first Reliever of the Year to win the award without getting any saves at all. The Reliever of the Year award has a shorter history, only having been started in 2008. (The Schaefer tradition was revived by the Crane Pool Forum in 2005.) Previous winners were Aaron Heilman in 2008, Francisco Rodriguez in 2009, and Hisanori Takahashi in 2011.

Jason Isringhausen, who missed the last part of the season, finished just over 2 points behind Beato. Francisco Rodriguez, who left the Mets in July, was less than a point behind Isringhausen.

FUN FACTS
The highest point total earned by any one player in 2010 was 5.99 and it was done by Miguel Batista on the final day of the season. Chris Capuano's 13-strikeout shutout was the second highest score; he somehow only got a 5.72.

The lowest "winning score" was the 0.77 that José Reyes was awarded on May 24, in an 11-1 loss to the Cubs.

The most Schaefer Player of the Game awards went to R.A. Dickey, with 15.

Outstanding illustrating and tabulating. Thanks BG.

And congratulations, 2011 Schaefer Player of the Year Jose Reyes and Pitcher of the Year R.A. Dickey. As for the Reliever of the Year, I can't believe Brian Stokes didn't swoop in late and grab this from Beato, but good for Pedro persevering under the weight of Rule 5 status (if, in fact, that was a burden for him).

Tim Byrdak, BTW, was the only reliever to spend the entire season on the active roster and be readily available all year. Pedro had a DL stint, as did Bobby Parnell; Izzy wasn't DL'd but would have been had it not been September, and in any event couldn't pitch the final few weeks. Others were traded or sent down or started the season in the minors.

How about that exact tie for fifth?

(Too bad neither guy actually had a particularly successful season.)

Pagan's wasn't quite as bad as it's made out to be. Interesting that they tied there though. Also interesting is that Bay nearly had as many SB as HR.. given that, surprised he tied for as high as 5th.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2011

I'll disagree. Pagan's offensive dropoff was disappointing pretty close to within a typical range of variance from last year, but his defensive dropoff was disastrous for the team and could hardly have been expected.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2011

And David Wright in fourth place! Unprecedented!

Who would have guessed that Justin Turner, Lucas Duda, and Ruben Tejada would all finish in the top ten? A very strange season.

I thought Dickey's three-in-a-row for Pitcher of the Month may have been a first, but Santana did it in August 2008, September 2008, and April 2009. Pedro Martinez won it four months in a row, April, May, June, July 2005.

This year, by the way, I made sure to include at least one example of each Topps baseball card year from the 1970s. (Last year 1977 missed out.)

I also have a few unused cards that I prepared as some of the monthly races winded down. I'll keep them in reserve in case I need them in future seasons. If, however, the player departs during the offseason I'll post the cards in the "memories of" thread. (I suspect this will happen at least once or twice.)

There's one such card that I already did this with. I'll repost it here for all you completionists out there:

You know, Grimm, anybody, presumably, could photoshop stuff like this, but you just get to the soul of these things. THAT is a 1971 Beltran in a way nothing else could be a 1971 Beltran. Every time you post your cards, I say "great job" or something to that effect, but seriously -- GREAT job. Thank you for doing them. They unleash a surge of some Met chemical deep within when I stare at them for minutes...which I've been known to do.

And I noticed every Topps year of the '70s being represented and appreciated that, too.

Thank you! I do try to match the photo with the years. The Ruben Tejada works for 1975 but would not have for a 1970, for example.

Every once in a while, when I look at one of these cards that I've made, I actually can imagine the smell of bubble gum. When that happens, I know I have a winner.

That is really cool. I'm jealous of you guys since I didn't see these cards as they came out.

I imagine if you ever did this with cards from the 80's I'd feel the exact same way.

Nonetheless, great job as always BG. Both with the cards and the voting.

Unfortunately that's been the story for this team for a number of years running now: only a handful of players who had both good and complete seasons so part-timers and mediocre ones climb higher up the list than you'd expect.
Turner was 4th on the team in ABs this season (only a shade behind Wright) while Tejada & Duda were 9th & 10th and not all that far behind Beltran. That's the kind of thing you can't and don't foresee coming in.

I think one difference between the decades is not that the earlier one was in Grimm's wheelhouse but that Topps had a monopoly on the card business for a significant time (later broken up by lawsuits IIRC) so that there essentially was just one style of card that is instantly recognizable as a '1976' or '1972'
By the '80s the monopoly had been busted up so there were more companies and a lot more variation and therefore no one definitive design per year.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2011

I consider Topps' designs from 1983 to 1987 to be pretty unforgettable images of my youth.

I remember cutting the tops with the team name off of the 1986 cards and taping new one's on if a player was traded mid-season. Horrible to a card collector, but lots of fun for me.

Besides...doubles? I had doubles.

Just noticed (because the whole set is currently my wallpaper), Murphy is 1b-of in 1971. Projecting his next card as INF.

Which always struck me as a Topps copout when I was a kid.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2011

I've been thinking about this for a while, and can't stop now in light of yesterday's photo, but I like this one because:
[list][*]The high angle makes it look like he's been photographed while standing in the mezzanine level --- in full uniform plus helmet.[/*:m]
[*]His smile is just a little skeezy, as if he's saying, "Ladies, I know you like what you're seeing."[/*:m]
[*]It's not hard, in fact, to imagine him not wearing pants at all.[/*:m][/list:u]

That Mike Heath Donruss card is seriously ugly and would perhaps be the last card I ever bought. Maybe it was!

Wow, I'm flattered about the wallpaper thing. (Do you mean the wallpaper on your computer, or in your house?)

Good eye on the Daniel Murphy card. That one is actually a holdover from 2009 when he was in the race for September POTM (eventually won by Jeff Francoeur). The 1b-of designation was more appropriate then, but since Murphy's 2011 win closed during a time I was away on vacation I didn't have the opportunity to change his position on the card. (And I'm not sure what I would have chosen anyway!)

Unfortunately, we no longer have to imagine him without pants.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR, 2011

When Murphy won his 2011 PotM, his card would have been that which was printed well before the season started. If he won it in September 2011, then perhaps a high number would have been in order so as to capture his change of position. (Though high numbers kind of disappeared, in terms of their meaning, after '72, and '72 had no positions.)

My computer wallpaper, I meant, but now you've given me a great home decorating idea.
