Bonilla's At The Plate
to the tune of "Cat's In The Cradle"
http://www.birdsnest.com/catcrad.htm

He signed a big contract for '92
Gonna hit 30 homers, score a hundred too
We knew he could hit, and we knew he could play
Lead us to the top and we'd be there to stay
And you know when he signed we said,
“We're gonna really like you, Bob
You know we're gonna really love you”

Well, Bonilla's at the plate and the fans're booin'
Wiggling his bat, doesn't know what he's doin'
We thought this guy was good
But he ain't no more
Can we get those millions back, pal?
Why can't we get that money back...

Well, it then turned out that he couldn't play
Guess he spent too much time at the Grand Buffet
They couldn't teach him to throw, didn't hustle that way
"I'll show you the Bronx" was his big cliche
And when the season was over, he smiled and he said
"I'll be better in '93, yeah...
I'll be so much better in '93...”

Well, Bonilla's at the plate and the fans're booin'
Wiggling his bat, doesn't know what he's doin'
We thought this guy was good
But he ain't no more
Can we get those millions back, pal?
Why can't we get that money back...

Well, we started next season with the highest hope
But things fell apart, it was a slippery slope
Doc was washed up, A.Y. lost sixteen
Vince threw the 'cracker and the club was obscene
What we'd really like, guys, is to forget this happened...
See you later, Mr. Dallas Green...

Well, Bonilla's at the plate and the fans're booin'
Wiggling his bat, doesn't know what he's doin'
We thought this guy was good
But he ain't no more
Can we get those millions back, pal?
Why can't we get that money back...

He came back again in '99
Even though his career was on the decline
“I’d like to try again, do it one more time,
"Just let me pinch-hit and I'll be fine."
But he wasted a big spot in Game 162
And those Met fans, they still hate you...
Those Met fans, they still hate you.

And once he was gone it occurred to me
They'll pay him 'til twenty-thirty-three
Gonna cost us 'til 2033

Well, Bonilla's at the plate and the fans're booin'
Wiggling his bat, doesn't know what he's doin'
"Why don't you go play cards,
You bum!" they say
Can we get those millions back, pal?
Why can't we get that money back...

Sorry I'm late with this. I had a meeting after work and I just got home for the evening. Better late than never.

Big Bad John

Big John
Big John

He was hitting in the cage as all the fans arrived.
He stood 6 foot 5, weighed 225.
Kind of broad at the shoulders and thick at the hip.
And with each graceful swing a line drive he would rip, Big John

Big John
Big John
Big Bad John
Big John

Seattle was the place that John called home
Pried him from Toronto for one Person alone.
April ’97, opening day at Shea
And the fans poured in to see number 5 play, Big John
He trotted to first base to start the game,
And I had a sense that things would never be the same.
He plucked errant throws from the spot that he manned,
With a helmet on his head and a deft right hand.

Big John
Big John
Fieldin’ John
Big John

He’d bat third in the home half of the first frame,
The most anticipated time in the game
The crowd was cheering, my heart beat fast
As he slowly strolled to the plate at last, Big John
Gardner threw a fast ball at the knees, away
Olerud hit a liner to the gap opposite way.
Hamilton gave chase, but he knew it was trouble,
His dive came up empty and Ollie had a double, Big John.

Big John
Big John
Doublin’ John
Big John

The Mets trailed by five entering inning seven
And I prayed hard for a miracle from heaven.
After 18 outs, we hadn’t touched home plate
We needed runs before it was too late, Big John.
Gardner threw a slider on the inside black
We all stood and yelled when we heard the loud crack.
The ball soared deep into the right field stands
And Shea had a new hero, we were all now fans, of Big John.

Big John
Big John
Sluggin’ John
Big John

The Mets lost both games of a twin bill that day,
There just wasn’t much joy to be had at Shea.
The lone bright spot of this dismal day
Was our hard hat first baseman, that really could play, Big John.

Two "classic" songs, two classic parodies.
Good jobs.

Yet another really tough decision!

one of my least favorite Mets against my absolute favorite, two good songs and both parodied off things i know (not knowing your song is a big minus to me at least.)
i almost went with one guy just because i wanted to give him even more credit for his amazing 1st round song, i decided that wouldn't be fair and voted for the other guy because i liked his current song just a tiny bit better....we should definetaly have a losers' bracket!

With roughly 30% of the precincts reporting, this race is still too close to call. Currently tied at 4 votes each.

Why am I not instantly getting what song Rockin' Doc is parodying?

Edgy DC
Nov 10 2005 09:19 AM

Just know that if the vote is low, it's not that I forget to vote or neglect to, but rather than my non-vote is my way of saying I can't choose.

Johnny Dickshot

Doc is parodying the kountry klassik "Big Bad John" by sausage king Jimmy Dean.

You can hear a sample thru Amazon, search for Jimmy Dean;s greatest hits.

I'll reiterate what the others said -- tough tough choice, and I get the winner!

Nov 10 2005 09:57 AM

Thanks, Johnny. Could hear it in my head but couldn't come up with the title.

Have to think on this one a bit.

Another one locked up in a tie, and a lot of the voters have chimed in too.

I took a look at the Brackets thread, and it seems that the fewest votes we've had was 16, and the most was 26.

With a 10-10 tie, there may only be another half-dozen votes remaining. If somebody gets to 13 they should be looking pretty good.

It could come down to who has the most money to buy votes.

sharpie
Nov 10 2005 02:55 PM

Maybe we should get 2 more songs about Eric Hillman.

Is MiniKnight allowed to vote if his parents aren't involved?

MFS62
Nov 10 2005 03:56 PM

Something devilish inside me wants this to end in another tie.
Who is the next tiebreaker? I nominate Steve Dillon. (If they want to win that badly, let them really work for it.)

I think it might be fun if tiebreakers were non-players. It would give guys like Eddie Yost a chance to be immortalized in song.

Edgy DC
Nov 10 2005 04:07 PM

I thought that also.

]Is MiniKnight allowed to vote if his parents aren't involved?

Why not? I don't think we have a voting age requirement (although he really should recuse himself for parental contests. Especially if they ever faced off against each other).

I think the head-to-head on the same subject tiebreaker thing is good and maybe we should think about for next year having that apply to final rounds. The way it is now there is often unequal periods of time for contestants to write songs as the various brackets take different amounts of time.

Pete Flynn in song would be cool...

Still tied at 11, with 20 minutes remaining.

Any voters out there care to break this deadlock?

OK, you can each PM me numbers from 1-500, I guess. We gonna have a shoot-out.

seawolf17
Nov 11 2005 07:53 AM

Bring it on! Can we use numbers that were "already used"? I don't know what you're doing with the numbers. If we're allowed to reuse numbers, then I'll take 17. If not, I'll take 411.

Edgy DC
Nov 11 2005 08:39 AM

PM me a number. This must be discrete. Discreet. Whichever.

P.S. It's "discreet."

OK, between eye exams, I'll get a number from Doc, and we'll move on.

Congratulations on the tie.

Greetings from beautiful Asheville, NC. I left yesterday afternoon for the winter meeting of the NC State Optometric Society in the magnificent Grove Park Inn.

I just found computer access so that I could see how the voting turned out in my match up with Seawolf. A tie? Damn, where is Sal when you need him.

Congratulations to my worthy opponent. It looks like we get to do it all over again.

I won't return home until late Sunday evening. Hopefully, I can have another parody ready to go by Tuesday evening. Best of luck to Seawolf and I'll be in touch when I get back home.

Just got home from Asheville. I see that Seawolf and I are to decide this with Bud Harrelson parodies. I will try to shoot for Tuesday evening. I'll let Seawolf know when I'm ready to go.

Best of luck to you Seawolf and may the best parody win.
