Jason Bay: Four years, 18.25 million.

]His agreement calls for a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $750,000 next year, $3.25 million in 2007, $5.75 million in 2008 and $7.5 million in 2009. His salary in the final year could also escalate by up to $750,000.

Almost guarantees he'll finish his contract elsewhere.

Scott Eyre as reported here goes to the Cubs for two years $11 million....I mean is that crazy or what?

Edgy DC
Nov 18 2005 12:45 AM

Maybe. At least it's only two years.

The thing is... the people who've really needed a situational reliever the last few years were the teams facing Bonds and the Giants in the NL West.

seawolf17
Nov 18 2005 06:58 AM

Sorry. Saw the other thread first.

Eyre's deal is 3 years for $11 million, which isn't that bad.

smg58
Nov 18 2005 11:26 AM

I'd have put that as Eyre's market value. He said he wanted to move closer to his home in Florida, but New York is closer than Chicago. I think we may have blinked and missed an opportunity.

If the Pirates can't find $7.5M to pay Jason Bay in 2009, they should contract right now. I could see them dealing him if they don't think they can sign him beyond that year, but a few more years like last year and Bay will be worth twice that.

that is a shitload of years and money. toronto will come to regret that contract in a few years i think.

Edgy DC
Nov 25 2005 08:52 PM

That regret may go beyond Toronto if and when the Mets offer a similar deal to Billy Wagner.

Nymr83
Nov 25 2005 08:59 PM

hopefully the Mets will realize that Toronto drastically overpaid and that Wagner is older to begin with. If another team wants to offer him 5 years let him go.

smg58
Nov 25 2005 09:01 PM

4 years and $28M would have been my limit on Ryan. A lot of free agent relievers are happy right now.

Where is Toronto getting this money? They were rumored to be making a big offer to Burnett, too.

God, I hope Wagner doesn't turn around and insist on five years now. Not that I know who else would even consider that.

He should be more than adequate as a fifth starter, which is all Oakland really needs right now, but that's a lot to pay for a #5. I'd have figured they'd spend whatever money they have on a bat.

That's a lot of money.

We may have overpaid for Beltran, but the market has shifted and his deal may look better as time passes. Provided he produces, of course.

What's Albert Pujols going to worth once he puts his six years in?

Or David Wright?

smg58
Dec 04 2005 11:11 AM

I'd love to know what the people who criticized the Dodgers for overspending last year think of this one. And where will he play? Don't they have Izturis and Kent in the middle of the infield? Christ, this is more per year than Konerko or Wagner. I don't get this one at all.

Frayed Knot
Dec 04 2005 11:14 AM

The Cards already inked Pujols to a multi-year deal - for 6 years I think - one that will take him through his remaining arb-eligible years plus the first few FA seasons. And they're probably happy they did so in the relatively "cheap" span between the free spending dot-com era leading up to about 2000 and the one MLB seems to be diving headlong into since last year.

Revenues for teams as a whole are way up right now. Rev-sharing and lux-tax money have spread the money out to more teams, satellite radio cash is starting to pour in, and the clubs are either smelling - or in some case maybe already spending - the loot from the impending sale of the Nationals who they've all been subsidizing for the last 5 years.

When you consider that Furcal - assuming that those numbers are accurate - is getting almost as much on a per/year basis as Vlad did just 2 winters ago, it's safe to say that there's money to be spent out there now.

smg58
Dec 04 2005 11:21 AM

Pujols is signed through 2010 (his 10th season), with an option for 2011. The annual price tag from 2008 on is $16M. Barring an injury, it's a bargain for the Cardinals.

Wright will be arbitration eligible after 07, and Reyes after this year. They will stop being cheap, and Beltran's contract is backloaded. The Mets still have plenty of money to spend this year, but Minaya had also better plan ahead.

The 35-year-old left-hander was a combined 2-3 with a 2.45 ERA in 79 games last season for the Seattle Mariners and the Marlins, who acquired him at the July 31 trade deadline.

Villone, a native of Edgewater, N.J., is joining his 10th major league team following stints with Seattle, San Diego, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Colorado. Houston, Pittsburgh and Florida. He is owed $2 million next season in the second year of a $4.2 million, two-year contract.

Kazuhisa Ishii was released Monday by the Mets, who signed three other pitchers to minor league contracts.

The Mets agreed to terms with left-handers Darren Oliver and Pedro Feliciano, and right-hander Jose Parra. All three were invited to spring training.

After starting pitcher Steve Trachsel went down with a back injury in March, Ishii was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers for catcher Jason Phillips. The left-hander went 3-9 with a 5.14 ERA in 19 games, including 16 starts, during his only season in New York.

Ishii is 39-34 with a 4.44 ERA in four major league seasons.

The 35-year-old Oliver pitched in the minors last season. He is 87-79 with a 5.07 ERA in 12 big league seasons. He split the 2004 season between the Florida Marlins and Houston Astros.

Feliciano and Parra pitched in Japan this year. Both relievers were with the Mets in 2004.

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners have reached an agreement on a four-year contract with Los Angeles Angels free-agent left-handed pitcher Jarrod Washburn.

After spending his first seven years with the Los Angeles Angels, Washburn became a free agent on Dec. 7 after the Angels declined arbitration for the 31-year-old left-hander. General manager Bill Stoneman had previously said the team was not going to try and re-sign Washburn.

Washburn's agent, Scott Boras, had been pursuing a five-year deal for Washburn.

Last year, Washburn went 8-8 and made 29 starts. He had a brief stint on the disabled list with inflammation in his pitching elbow. It was just the sixth time in his career he was on the disabled list.

His best season came in 2002, when he helped the Angels to their only World Series title.

Washburn was 18-6 with a 3.15 ERA in the regular season. He has a career record of 75-57 and a 3.93 ERA, but has won more than 11 games only once.

Parra and Feliciano give the Mets some options in the back of the pen. They may not help, but they won't hurt.

Millwood's much less of a flyball pitcher than Park, so they at least learned something from the Park fiasco. I don't know if Millwood is really good enough for this kind of contract -- I look at his decent WHIP and HR totals from last year and wonder how his ERA could possibly be so low. ]Boston reaches preliminary agreement on $6.7 million, two-year deal with Tavarez
By HOWARD ULMAN, AP Sports Writer
January 11, 2006

BOSTON (AP) -- Julian Tavarez and the Red Sox reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday on a $6.7 million, two-year contract as Boston added another newcomer to its rebuilt bullpen.

The reliever must pass a physical for the deal to be finalized, a person familiar with the negotiations said, speaking on condition of anonymity because Boston has not yet announced the agreement. The physical is likely to take place Thursday.

Tavarez, a 32-year-old right-hander, gets a $500,000 signing bonus and salaries of $3.1 million in each of the next two seasons. The agreement also includes a club option for 2008 of $3.85 million. That option would become guaranteed if Tavarez appears in a total of 125 games in the next two seasons or 65 games in 2007.

This signing would have been much worse than another year for Roberto or even a arbi-decided 1-year deal for Looper IMO.
And when you consider that the original rumors were for more than 2 years and for bigger money than what's stated above ...

Vagina Boy.

A great nickname from the ill-fated "Let's Give The Starting Rotation A Mnemonic Device" from last April.

Hmmm. I don't remember that. Nor do I understand it!

Does Zambrano actually have a vagina? That would be pretty surprising.

I don't remember how it started... I wish the old site were still around. We were trying to come up with a mnemonic to remember the order of the rotation, and someone suggested something ending in Vagina (for Victor) and Boy (for Benson?). Or maybe it was just that Victor was vagina. I don't remember.

I remember the thread that seawolf makes reference to. Someone came up with Vagina for Victor Zambrano. I would have never remembered that on my own, but I remember it now that seawolf brought it up. I can't seem to remember the pneumonics associated with Pedro or Tom Glavine either.

Can anyone else remember any of this thread? I believe Johhny D. was active in the thread at the time, but I'm not positive.

As Frayed Knot reported earlier, Frank Thomas signs with Oakland. It is reported to be for one year at $ 500,000. Incentives based on at bats and production could add another $ 2.6 million.

Seems like a pretty good signing for the A's. Thomas has been fragile, but when healthy he can produce at the plate. If he gets injured or simply can't produce, then Oakland is only out the $ 500k. Oakland only has to ante up big money if Thomas can remain healthy and productive. Seems like a low cost deal with a potentially big upside.
