Good wishes for Veterans Day to MFS62 and all the many who have served in the armed forces.

Thank you.
Good memory.

I'll salute the flag an extra time, just for you.

I was asked in another thread if I remembered Roger Breshanan. Of course, I don't remember him, as his career ended in 1915.

But thinking about that era, it occurs to me that this may be the last Veterans Day for American veterans of the Great War. With Dickshot's uncle passing this year, there can't be much more than 50 left.

Thank you 62 and any other unknown-to-me veterans on this board.

Thank you Dad, my uncles, my cousins, my next door neighbors and all the others who have been and are brave enough to serve.
It is an honor to salute you.

And happy veterans day to those who've served in Iraq. I don't support the war, but I do support y'all.

Wow. I guess any living World War I veteran would have to be at least 105 or so.

I must have missed the thing about Johnny's uncle. I had no idea he had a living veteran of the first World War as an uncle.

Just in time, an article to satisfy Yancy:

My best friend in grade school's birthday is Veteran's Day. Happy Birthday, Steven.

Hey, you can't spell "Veterans" without "Steven."

Bob Murphy would have been very proud today. He used to call every opposing pitcher over 25 a veteran right hander or veteran lefthander.

I only know too "normal" veterans. 62 and the Big Boss here. All the other
ones who were in 'nam or just pulled duty are fucking crackers. Glad to see
you survived the service of our country both physically and mentally - and
thank you for giving up some time of your life.

According to that article there was still a Civil War vet alive until 1958 meaning he would have been able to see the start of the Civil Rights movement. Wow.

I remember stories about that Civil War guy. By the time he died he was one of the (maybe THE) longest living American.
Combine that with the fact that it was much easier to get into battle while underage back then - particularly as a Southerner which he was - and you had one long lasting CW vet.

"it occurs to me that this may be the last Veterans Day for American veterans of the Great War. With Dickshot's uncle passing this year, there can't be much more than 50 left."

The person in question there was not a WW1 vet.
He was old but he wasn't that old.

109-year old British WWI vet would like to join up again.
