Derek Jeter is Still a Terrific Shortstop

It's not his fault that the engineers made RF at YSIII five feet deeper than it should have been. He has heart. He's the captain. He has an Edge. He would have played every inning of a doubleheader on the last day of the season if he was leading the batting title race. Even if only one game was scheduled. There is absolutely no reason at all for the Yankees to have any interest in Jose Reyes. None. Jeter is by far and away, still the better player. And will be for the next 7-10 years. In fact, they should sign him to an extension. Please tell everyone you know.

They should pay him double what he's asking. Just for all of those intangibles....

The thing is, if baseball operated the way other businesses did --- law firms, architecture firms, accounting or advertising --- he'd have a partnership by now anyhow. Or at least be angling for it. He'd be rewarded for everything he brought to the brand with a piece of the brand. I'd like it to operate like that. I'd love to see the pressure on teams deciding on whether or not to retain a longtime star who has reached free agency and the fans are saying, "Come on --- give him a piece of the team! He's earned it!"
