Texas. Certain reasons (specificity omitted to avoid a fight) don't match-up to LaRussa and "the best fans in baseball."

I thank them for eliminating the Phillies early but I'd really like a sweep by the Rangers.

Goin' AL this year - been rooting against the Cards for the first two series, no reason to change now.

I just can't fathom how the Cardinals are here, of course the Brewers were just awful but it's not like the Cardinals starting pitching was good here, some respect here for LaRussa and his staff for guiding them.

[crossout:1muksct4]Four[/crossout:1muksct4] Five Cardinal World Series in my rooting lifetime before this one and I've never rooted for the Redbirds. Could have in '82, but was infatuated with those Brewers and was generally pissed off at everybody in the N.L. East for being better than we were. Could not have and didn't in '85 and '87; no explanation necessary. Had that vague "if they win, at least it means we lost to the eventual champs" thing going in '06, but that doesn't mean I rooted for them. I could barely stand to look that Series and did very little watching.

And as Gwreck points out, they were in the World Series in 2004, but Curse-breaking made me pretty much ignore them (though I kind of thought they'd win).

All this is to say I'd really like to throw my support to the Cardinals to honor what they've done in the past seven or so weeks, which has been fantastic for baseball, and also to get behind the good old National League. But they're the fucking Cardinals, and there's no getting around that. Plus the Rangers haven't done anything to turn me off.

So on paper, I'm with Texas. But in my heart, I'm honestly not so sure...until I remember La Russa and Molina. So I guess I'm with Texas there, too.

I'm really a disinterested non-observer here, but I went with Texas, pretty much because of my disdain for Tony LaRussa. I have no problem with Yadier Molina; when he hit that home run in 2006 he was just doing his job.

I'm going Cardinals because I always root against teams from Texas, particularly the Dallas-area ones; a guy I work with and like is a big Cardinals fan from St. Louis; I try to root for the NL team; and because this run they are on is pretty amazing. That being said, I have pretty tepid interest in this WS.

This is I think the problem with the regional nature of baseball, and the timing. I love baseball, but without the Mets for three weeks now, and fresh entertainment options in the Islanders and all the new TV shows coming back, my attention to baseball tends to wane.

I chose Texas because they've never won and St. Louis has won too many times.

That being said, I don't plan on watching even a single inning of this series.

Re: World Series rooting interest poll

I went with the Cards. I have to pull for the National League. The only time I can remember rooting for the American League was the White Sox series -- I've had sort of a bond with the Sox since the Seaver years and visiting Old Comiskey.

Having lived in Missouri during the college years I have an affection for the area, and they are damn good fans. But I wouldn't weep if Texas won. It's nice to see teams get their first championships, and it might for a few moment remind people in Texas that there are sports beyond football.

Re: World Series rooting interest poll

As I posted in another thread, the managerial matchup is interesting. An admitted ex-cocaine user against an ex-lawyer. Its a real quandry. But that fact that LaRussa used to wear Styx t-shirts put me in his corner.

I would have prefered Milwaukee or Philadelphia to represent the National League, but I think Tony the Punk (a friend of mine has called him that since Tony's White Sox managerial days) will figure out a way to win.
It will take him a while - maybe 6 games.

Texas once again. One, because of my friend Corey, and two, because we took 2 out of 3 from them and are therefore better than the champs.

Re: World Series rooting interest poll

I'm at the point of really not caring.

My son will have minimal interest in the Cardinals - he'll be happy if they win and he finds out about it. D-Dad will be amused if, once again, the World Series is won by a team we had visited that season.

I'm just hoping it goes seven games, so I have a little more baseball before it's gone.

Let's get morbid.

I'm rooting for the Rangers, since the Cardinals won in the year of my birth and I'm always nervous about that "full circle" thing.

Well you did survive at least 1982 and 2006! ;)

Someday I'm going to wake up from this nightmare, I'll still be in the stands, and Beltran (or Floyd, or Reyes) will hit the ball out, and the Cardinals won't win that WS.

I was on the LIE, driving home from Greenwich High School, when Endy caught that ball; nearly drove off the road. I thought there was no way they lost that game after that. (Sigh.)

It's easy to forget 2004 as the Cardinals basically also forgot to show up for that series against the Red Sox.

This will be the Cardinals' third WS in the past 10 years (more than any other team).

Rooting for the NL, rooting against Texas, rooting against the DH. Not rooting against Nolan Ryan. Rooting for original team vs expansionists. And I kinda like LaRussa. What's the negativity toward him about? I think I've asked this here before.

Thanks for catching that mysterious oversight. I didn't particularly dislike those '04 Cardinals (I rooted for them hard against the Astros) but the Red Sox story was too good to pass up.

[mfyfanlogic] Um, no. Jon Heyman says the Yankees have been in more WS than any other team ever, therefore, they must have been there more times than the Cardinals in the last ten years. [/mfyfanlogic]

When the Tigers clinched and the Mets won Game Six, my parents splurged and bought me a ticket for World Series Game One, fully believing that the Mets would be in Detroit for that game.

It was an amazing gift either way. But, wow, a Mets World Series game would have been incredible.

I will never root for a team that beat the Mets in a postseason series.

it was okay imo in 2004, the Mets had won the last postseason series against them (in semi-humiliating fashion) but since 2006..
