Darryl Strawberry Award

Edgy MD
Oct 20 2011 07:48 AM

Please vote for your top five Mets outfielders of 2011. They will be awarded five points for each first-place vote, four for each second-place vote, etc. He with most points after a week is awarded the 2011 Crane Pool Forum Darryl Strawberry Award for Outstanding Mets Outfielder.

By my count, 11 Mets and ex-Mets toiled in the great green expanse while garbed in Metly colors this season: Mike Baxter, Jason Bay, Carlos Beltran, Lucas Duda, Nick Evans, Scott Hairston, Willie Harris, Fernando Martinez, Daniel Murphy, Angel Pagan, and Jason Pridie.

Please vote so we may honor the most esteemed of the Mets' ballhawks. Note that many of our eligible players also played other positions. In voting, please consider only the performance of the players in question that occurred while they were outfielding. Their numbers below represent only their contributions as outfielders. As always, I ask for promotional support on the Twitterverse and Facebook.

I realize those defensive stats must look like a lot of noise, but check it out. Bay, despite playing with the Great Wall of China behind him half the time, had our only two home-run pullbacks on the year. I seem to remember another one... Harris?

Pridie over Bay? Really? Isn't that just flaunting an agenda in the face of reality? Are you seriously suggesting that Pridie contributed more to the Mets OF this year, with his .390 OPS and 17TB in 200+ PA, then Bay did with a .700+OPS, 166TB in 500+PA? Even factoring in superior defense, there is no reasonable argument for either Pridie (OR Hairston for that matter) over Bay, except your pre-season expectations and the size of Bay's contract, neither of which have anything to do with assessing his actual production.

Look, i'm not a Bay fan, and i'm disappointed in him, too, but this is an exercise in which we should all be using our own best judgment, not just beating dead horses.

Pretty sure Pridie did not have an .082 SLG, as the chart indicates.

While I agree with this, that OPS was way off. That should be a .690 for Pridie.

I make no secret of my dislike for Bay but I think it's a defensible choice to leave him off in favor of Pridie:
Bay's WAR: 0.6
Pridie's WAR: 0.6

Yabbut even then, Bay's got him on all the counting stats, the rate stats and the playing time.

Fangraphs has it:

Bay --- 0.7
Pridie --- 0.5

I thought the WAR was supposed to normalize for that. Pridie rose to the same level of mediocrity as Bay, he just did so over a shorter amount of time.

okay, but even if you're going just by WAR, Hairston had 0.2, as did Pagan. So i don't think you were going just on WAR.
I think you should just acknowledge that your inclusion of both Hairston and Pridie over Bay was simply a matter of your anger at Bay for his continued falling short of expectations and sucking up contract resources, and not really based on an objective assessment of which OFers contributed most to the Mets this year. And that's your prerogative, of course, but you should expect to be called on it.

Re: Darryl Strawberry Award

You're right, I wasn't going strictly by WAR; I merely offered it as one consideration. Again, I'll admit to disliking Bay (as a baseball player) and have no problem being called on that.

If there was some sort of absolute objective measure of the Mets' outfielders then there would be no point to this excercise because we'd all vote the same way.

Re: Darryl Strawberry Award

Beltran 93
Bay 85
Pagan 81
Duda 39*
Harris 41*

*i've only approximated duda's and harris's scoring here, as i don't have my own breakout by position. by scaling down my "marathon points" by OF playing time, harris has a slight edge, but i'm bumping duda up to better account for reality. duda's offensive production is almost certainly worth more than the 6 runs he gives up to harris on defense. plus it's my proprietary data. i'm allowed to fudge it if i want to!

the ranking would remain the same if i accounted for lucas duda as a complete player and willie harris as a complete player. duda scored 78 total mp's to harris' 56, 4th and 5th among players i consider our 2011 outfielders.

Re: Darryl Strawberry Award

One thing about WAR. Whether you use it or not, respect it or not it is designed to measure the player's contribution in toto. This thread asks you to measure their offensive and defensive contributions as outfielders alone, and some of these guys' WAR points represent their contributions as pinch-hitters or as infielders.

With Hairston and Harris, that would seemingly be meaningful.

And Duda.
I didn't rank him in the top 5 on the IF list and low on the OF because he only had 100 and change ABs as each.
But when we get around to the 2011 Rankings Project his total contribution is what matters and then he could very well jump ahead of several of the guys I put him behind here.
