Opportunity. Knocking.

Got an offer for a new job in Baltimore yesterday afternoon. The money's the same, and in a sense, less, because I'd have to give up my evening gig, but that's run it's course anyway. But it's exciting, meaningful work, and I more or less have to take it, as my gig here is shutting down at the end of the new year.

But I interviewed with seven people, and there seemed to be three or four different understandings of what the job was. I don't want to go in there with a whole bunch of varying and possibly conflicting expectations. I'm going to call up today and try and get some clarity on the job description. I'll try not to do with the tone of "I don't want to get your hopes up."

The cool thing was how liberating the whole thing was. I got the offer at about 2:00 and I worked until about 8:30 last night, and if you take out a half hour of chow time, it was about six of my most productive hours of the year. I closed out two projects, I followed up with stray authors, I cleaned out some e-mail, I didn't goof off on the Pool, and when folks came by my office to chat, I didn't get all cranky at them for interrupting my focus. When the chat ended, I stepped right in where I left off. Suddenly, I was a multi-tasking superhero.

I don't have ADD after all. That's just a byproduct of workplace angst.

Great for you, yeah, I would deffo want clarity on the job , interview with seven different people, sounds like a lot?

The ride to Baltimore is what?

It's 45 minutes on the train, plus 10-15 minutes on either end of the commute, I suppose. It's been a while since I've been a straphanger. I miss the reading, but I imagine I'll soon be reminded of things I haven't missed.

Re: Opportunity. Knocking.

Baltimore is one of Wifey's fantasy relocation cities, we think about it some.

Would the job mean a move there?

No, but maybe later down the line if things work out.

Beat-up little seagull
On a marble stair
Tryin' to find the ocean
Lookin' everywhere

Hard times in the city
In a hard town by the sea
Ain't nowhere to run to
There ain't nothin' here for free

Hooker on the corner
Waitin' for a train
Drunk lyin' on the sidewalk
Sleepin' in the rain

And they hide their faces
And they hide their eyes
'Cause the city's dyin'
And they don't know why

Oh Baltimore
Man it's hard just to live
Oh, Baltimore
Man, it's hard just to life, just to live

"August & Everything After" was an awesome album. The Counting Crows never came close to equally it again.[/aside]

I thought "Hard Candy" was really, really good, but for different reasons. "August" was almost a spiritual experience for me.

Re: Opportunity. Knocking.

I think we'll give it a year and if things are working out, we might start looking. Property is relatively cheap in Baltimore.

It's funny, in retrospect, that I chose that handle. New Yorker that I am, the minute I moved here, I developed a loyalty to this town (but for the most part, not the sports teams). I've moved twice while I've been here, and never considered crossing the district line. That's an easier choice, of course, while you don't have kids.

It's really really wrong that we don't have federal representation here, and doubly so that we pay federal taxes anyway. And I hope that changes before I ever leave.

Belated congrats on the new job.

An empty email box is indeed a beautiful thing, do your best to keep it that way! I've found even in my personal life that I just feel better when I can archive things from my gmail inbox because I've taken care of them.

I think it's a woman with Nikes. But that thing around her neck does appear to be a snake. I think she's taking the term "boa" too literally.
