I used to make fun of some of those posters at MOFO, but after all these years, who would have known that SELL THE TEAM NOW!!!! had it right from the get go.

Amazing. I am just so thoroughly disgusted with this team.

I realize I'm still giving Fred money by going to Brooklyn but I'll be paying minor league prices for a minor league team.

Someone should go ask the 'occupy wall street' people to relocate to Citi Field's parking lot.. They can protest Bernie Madoff, Public stadium financing, and really just make themselves useful by harassing Wilpon.

How about FUCK YOU LORIA? What about those years and years of phony losses that necessitated a stadium boondoggle?

Re: FUCK YOU METS

Loria may be a despicable guy, but he's not on my radar. If he's in a position to be able to offer Jose this type of deal, then good for him.

My issue is with the Wilpons (and to a lesser extent Sandy). Not being able to run your organization well enough that you are not in a position to retain your home-grown superstar is pathetic. This is, after all, New York, and the game is rigged so heavily in favor of big market teams. This is a seven-footer in basketball who fails to collect a rebound.

After everything the fans have been through with this team, they couldn't afford to let Reyes walk.

My issue with Sandy was not locking him up last year when his value was low. Of course, if he wanted to but his hands were tied by the Wilpons, then all my ire is directed at them.

FUCK THE WILPONS. FUCK THE METS.

Re: FUCK YOU METS

Yeah...I'm totally on board with this.

I loved Reyes. And maybe it was a good business decision to not pay him all that money for all those years but still...fuck them.

Sports is just sucking a bit fat juicy one for me right now.

Only time I get any joy from sporting events these days are maybe the 45 minutes of a Syracuse basketball game when I'm not thinking about, or the broadcasters aren't talking about Bernie Fine, and watching my son and daughter play soccer and basketball.

That's it.

Re: FUCK YOU METS

yeah, i've put sports on the backburner of my life, other than watching my daughter play softball (and trying unsuccessfully to avoid watching my son play baseball), and reading some articles, and this forum. I'll watch part of a football game, but the second i see the Jets play like... well, the Jets, i usually flip the channel (to avoid flipping the whole tv out the window). And now the Knicks are back, but really... i'm only going thru the motions of caring.

its just gotten to the point where it all causes me more pain than joy. so no thanks.

Re: FUCK YOU METS

And you know what, if they weren't even going to make an offer, why didn't they trade him at the deadline? At least we'd have something to show for it.

Six years at $17.5 a year is not unreasonable. If this was so far out of their range that they couldn't even get involved in the conversation, only an idiot would hold onto him.

At the time, I remember thinking that the "Don't Trade Reyes" camp should have been more specific. They should have said "Don't Trade Reyes BUT MAKE SURE YOU CAN RE-SIGN HIM". Of course, I suppose that should have been evident and only an idiot would think otherwise.

Fucking idiots.

good question, Wilpon's didn't want to look like they were giving up on the season?.......yet Beltran was traded.....

Re: FUCK YOU METS

I can't imagine a scenario in which I willingly give a Wilpon another penny of my money. Or his paid advertisers another second of time.

Seaver was before I was born and Strawberry was while I was young, and both of those guys had already won championships, which could have somewhat mitigated the awfulness of their departures.

This is the first time I've had to deal with something this bad from something that is supposed to be fun. And I don't think it's worth it. I can deal with losing. I can deal with ribbing (good-natured and otherwise) from fans of other teams. I can deal with watching promising prospects disappoint. I can deal with watching once great players struggle in the last phase of their career. I can deal with the endlessly ignorant and sanctimonious sports news media. I've even somewhat come to terms with the Citifield/SNY luxury-ization of the sport (although not nearly completely).

I don't think I can deal with this. And I don't think I want to. I think I've wasted a huge chunk of my life on something meaningless, and I don't think I should continue.

this is the part that irks me. Your franchise is drowning in so much red ink that a $100+m contract for Reyes is out of the question? Then how the fuck do you not move him? We got a real good pitching prospect for Beltran. We could've got something of similar value (or maybe better, considering Jose's age and production at the time) if the Wilpons determined that they couldn't afford him anymore. What changed between July and December? Nothing changed. Afraid of raising the white flag? What did you think the Beltran and K-Rod moves did? Did Reyes' presence keep you from losing $70m? I didn't think so.

fucking idiots.

Re: FUCK YOU METS

or, as Megdal said in the other thread:

In other words, if Alderson had really valued Reyes at 5 years and $80 million, but no higher, there could only have been two reasons he didn't trade him in July: Either he believed the value he'd receive in return wasn't greater than the pair of compensatory draft picks the Mets will receive now that Reyes has signed elsewhere; or ownership had instructed him not to trade Reyes, hoping instead to extract whatever value it could from the tickets the team would sell by holding onto Reyes for a few months more.

The former is awfully unlikely; shortstops hitting .341, as Jose Reyes was at the the trading deadline, are valuable commodities. What seems obvious now, if it wasn't at the time, is that the Mets' decisions about Reyes were all about short-term money.

then they're not venal, just stupid and incompetent.
Because if $80m was going to be there maximum number, even those of us hanging around HERE knew that would never be enough.
But I don't buy it; they saw the writing on the wall and just wanted to squeeze a few more sheckels out of us corn-fed hicks.

Yup. Beltran and K-Rod, as talented as they are/were, were not -- if you'll excuse the phrase -- "True Mets." Wright and Reyes are the guys who they could keep selling as OUR guys for the last two months.

Re: FUCK YOU METS

I don't know that I buy the whole "keep him August & September to keep some bums on seats" thing, the larger money is made @ Season ticket sales time and with broadcast deals. Surely they'd much rather have got this out of the way then, acquired some bonafide talent, rather then worry about the +/- 10% on individual tickets sales for 30 games. I mean how much could it actually be?
5,000 by 30 by $20 ? that's only $3 million, Reyes' salary for the 2 months would have been a chunk of that.

Re: FUCK YOU METS

From the J---J---J---J--- press conference today:

They showed me the plan right away, like 12:01, when I was a free agent, so that showed me that they want me there, you know, so they really push it. I see a lot of love from them, and I see the situation, I see the plan that they have, the great young talent that they have there in Miami, and I think it's a good opportunity to win...

Were you kind of hoping the Mets would be aggressive the way the Marlins were aggressive with you?
I mean, we expect that. Like I always say, I want to stay in New York, but that don't happen. Like I say, I need to move on because they don't offer anything, really, you know. They didn't make a real offer, so that means they don't want me there. Like I said, I need to move on. I'm not part of New York no more. I did thank them for giving me the opportunity to play in this game. But now it's about the Miami Marlins, so I'll continue to move on...

During the season, you guys know, I always say I want to go back to play there. But they don’t do anything to want me there. So, after that, there’s nothing really I can do. Now, I’m with the Miami Marlins. The Mets don’t do anything to have me. It is what it is, man. This is a business and I have to move on. It’s over. I can’t be crying about that, because they don’t show me anything. They don’t push anything to have me there. Why should I be worried about it if they didn’t want me?

No shocker. But still... really fun to hear.

Re: FUCK YOU METS

for a couple pages there, I was starting to think that this tragedy was never discussed...

I already had booked a trip to the Tampa area for the week that the Mets are playing the Rays for the first time in about a dozen years in Tampa (June 12-14th?) when Reyes signed with the Marlins...Now it's lost it's point...and unfortunately, we fly back just before Reyes invades the Rays with the Marlins (June 15th-17th)...
