Nobody else has more than 200. (Although if he comes back, Endy Chavez is at 223.)

Some good stuff in that article. Here it is, for posterity:

Statistical stories for 2012

By Mark Simon, ESPN Stats & Information

Expectations are low for the Mets this season. Very low. Good luck trying to find someone who will pick them to finish with a winning record.

Yet, there is intrigue of a statistical nature to be mined from the depths of fan despair. Here’s a look at some of the most interesting numerical storylines for 2012:

Wright’s record pursuit
How long will David Wright remain a Met? Well, at least long enough to break a few records. Wright already holds the Mets marks for doubles and total bases. Among the most-prominent records in Wright’s sights are ...

Most RBI: Wright’s 725 are eight shy of the Mets mark held by Darryl Strawberry.

Most Runs: Wright enters 2012 with 699, 36 shy of now-former Met Jose Reyes.

Most Hits: No guarantee he’ll get this one, but with a full season, he should come close. Wright enters with 1,248 hits, 170 shy of Ed Kranepool’s 1,418.

Did you know ... Lesser-known Mets records he could also surpass include most walks (45 shy of Strawberry), most strikeouts (63 shy of Strawberry), most sacrifice flies (five behind Kranepool) and times hit by a pitch (eight shy of Ron Hunt).

How will Citi Field play?
Last October, the Mets announced that there would be significant changes to Citi Field’s dimensions and outfield fence heights.

The reconfigured outfield wall will be a uniform eight feet in height. The dimensions from left to right are: 335-358-385-408-398-375-330.

The old measurements, although not precisely in the same spots, were: 335-371-384-408-415-378-330.

Mets management did studies showing the team would have hit 81 more home runs at home in the last three seasons, and allowed only 70 more with the new dimensions.

Home Runs at Citi Field
2009 to 2011
Mets Opponents
2009 49 81
2010 63 47
2011 50 58

Those who figure to be most impacted by the changes are:

David Wright: Wright hit eight home runs to right-center field at Shea Stadium from 2006 to 2008, but only one to that area in the three seasons of Citi Field.

Jason Bay: During the last two seasons, Bay hit 12 fly balls to left field in Citi Field that traveled an estimated 370 feet or more. Only six left the ballpark. That’s underachieving. The typical 370-foot-plus ball to left field goes out of the ballpark 80 percent of the time.

Left-Handed Hitters: In their three-season history, no Mets left-handed batter has hit a home run to left field. Ike Davis and Lucas Duda should have a better chance at it now.

Did you know ... The Mets have 169 road home runs over the last three seasons, second-fewest in the majors, ahead of only the Astros, at 158.

Johan
If nothing else, the Mets have a better-than-reasonable chance to spend at least one day this season above .500, since Johan Santana made it through spring training and will pitch on Opening Day against the Braves.

The pitch to watch in Santana’s return will be the changeup. From 2004 to 2008, when Santana was in his prime with the Twins, there was no more valuable out pitch in baseball, per advanced stat measurements on Fangraphs.com. In 2009 and 2010, the pitch was still good, but nowhere near as valuable.

What could be frustrating is if the Mets bullpen and bats fail to support Santana, something he was familiar with in his first three seasons.

From 2008 to 2010, the Mets lost 15 starts in which Santana went at least seven innings and allowed two runs or fewer. Over those three seasons, that was the most team losses in a pitcher’s starts in the majors.

Did you know ... If Santana finishes the season as an ERA-title qualifier, with a sub-three ERA, he would have three such seasons as a Met. The only Mets with at least three such seasons are Tom Seaver (9), Jerry Koosman (4), Dwight Gooden (3), Sid Fernandez (3) and Jon Matlack (3).

Replacing Reyes
The expectations for Ruben Tejada aren’t necessarily great, but there will be pressure on him to at least be adequate in attempting to replace Reyes.

What Tejada has going for him is that he’s young (22) and improving. He finished 2011 with a .360 on-base percentage (.368 after the All-Star Break) and had the second-highest line-drive rate on the team (21.4 percent), trailing only Willie Harris. He has shown flashes of being very good on the defensive end.

What’s missing from Tejada’s game is the wow factor that Reyes brought with him. In 174 major league games, Tejada has just one triple and seven stolen bases.

Tejada has minimal power, though he did hit a pair of home runs this spring. His .335 slugging percentage last season was two points lower than Reyes’ 2011 batting average.

Reyes had four years in which he was worth at least five Wins Above Replacement in his last six seasons. A reasonable expectation would be for Tejada to be worth half as much.

Did you know ... Tejada will not be the youngest Mets Opening Day shortstop. Nor was Reyes. The distinction actually falls to longtime major league coach Jose Oquendo, who started at shortstop on Opening Day for the 1984 Mets at age 20.

Everybody Loves Lucas
The offensive expectations for Lucas Duda seem to be high after an impressive spring training and stellar work in the latter part of 2011.

Some have drawn the Dave Kingman comparison, because Duda fits the profile of the slugger who can’t catch the ball. But on the offensive side, Duda may be a little bit better. His strikeout rate last season was such that if given 550 plate appearances, he’d have had only 90 whiffs.

Duda hit a respectable .219 and slugged .391 with two strikes last season, both considerably above the major league averages of .184 and .279 for non-pitchers. He only missed about once for every six two-strike swings, also better than the major league rate of about one in five.

Did you know ... Duda slugged .482 as a rookie in 2011, the fourth-highest slugging percentage by a Mets rookie with at least 250 plate appearances. The three higher were by Benny Agbayani (.525), Wright (.525) and Strawberry (.512).

Good luck trying to find someone who will pick them to finish with a winning record.

We have a few of them around here, Mark!

This is sorta factored into the projection. Wright's current pace (36 hits in 30 team games) accounts for him missing 10% of this season's games (3 out of 30) because of his pinky injury. A healthier Wright going forward projects to breaking Krane's record before 9/14/12. OTOH, Wright probably won't be hitting at a .375 clip all season long either.

Indeed. I was just trying to look for a way for him to do it at home!

so I guess if broken pinkies is factored in we should look for him to break it earlier..they're home the series before that Brewer series.

They made a middling deal of David passing Straw for the RBI record, so I assume they'll acknowledge it and then some, unless they're overly conscious of the cheap comparisons the Greek chorus in the media will make to the last guy in New York to set a franchise most-hits record.

David pulled early in Toronto to enjoy sharing second place with his "baseball brother". Scheduled to enjoy it some more tomorrow with a day off, which also works as a mercy rule where his head cold is concerned.

Congrats David on being half of No. 2. And on the roundish number.

Silly comparison. Full time 3Bs and/or SSs are almost always going to lead your team in errors in a given year.
It would be pretty odd circumstances for your 1st baseman to have more than your 3rd sacker and usually the sign of a real bad 1st-baseman although Ventura & Olerud wound up tied at 9 each in '99.

A bit surprising at first considering better speed and Citi being a better triples park than Shea -- but then you have to figure that more HRs means fewer balls in play which means fewer opportunity for triples.

The DP disparity is, of course, easily understood.

No, but, assuming the stat you're reading denotes DPs that said player is involved in, the 1st baseman gets "credit" for being in on most of the DPs his team turns whereas the guy on the other side of the diamond only gets in on it for those around the horn jobs (that sounds dirty) plus the odd line-drive DP.

From when the Mets still didn't quite know what to do with Eddie: A 1984 piece reprinted by Mets Merized Online visited the lion somewhat shy of winter.

Of course, after playing 17 years for the Mets, Ed Kranepool knows plenty about suffering; adversity was what the Mets were all about, so after a while, you develop a taste for crow. But now that this Metsian legend has hit 40, doesn’t nostalgia dictate that Kranepool have a taste of glory, or at the very least chicken, at a dinner in his honor.

“I don’t need them to give me a dinner,” Kranepool says simply, but not very convincingly. Jim Schiaffo, the man who once hit Eddie grounders at Christmas, feels differently. “I’m personally disappointed,” says Schiaffo about the Mets’ oversight. “Seventeen years with the team, and no recognition. They didn’t even buy this kid a sport jacket, for God’s sake.”

“I hope that someday they will give him a day,” says ex-wife Carole. “I think it would take away some of the bitterness he feels about leaving the team. He’s hurting.”

Seems a bit too bitter for someone of Kranepool's stature. I agree the Mets didn't, and still to this day it seems, have quite the knack of giving honors out for long time ex-players.

But at the same time a case could be made that by 1984 they were clocking time until Seaver officially called it quits, which meant everyone was pretty much on hold for any sort of special day. Harrelson and Staub got inducted into the Mets based on pretty much exhausting non-player (save for a certain long time pitching coach) who deserved enshrinement and they didn't want to wait much longer for Tom to finally say "yeah, that's it, I'm done!"

And by the same token, never really been too keen on Kranepool being "honored" in the Mets Hall or given a day. Ambassador with the Mets organization? Sure. Trotted out for special events and ? Why not. Yeah he was an original Met, yeah he was at the time of that article a member of both postseason teams (though neither you could claim he was the true everyday starter) but it's by sheer attrition and being a "compiler" (TM Sports Pope Fatcessa) that landed him so high among the Metly leaders.

And I don't know, and granted this would be different 30 years ago, but looking at other all time team hit leaders, Kranepool's 1,418 is dwarfed by pretty much every team with a few exceptions, including franchises created after the Mets started. Okay granted teams like the Brewers, Padres and Royals have their hit king in the vaunted 3,000 club, but it does say something about honoring a pedestrian, mostly part time career. Especially when someone with about a decade less in service time is set to break it.

I mean is Ron Hodges all broken up that the Mets essentially gave him a Death of A Backup Backstop ending?

Re: David vs. the Krane

We have to see that article for the snapshot in time that it was. 'Pool was a favorite of Mrs. Payson and lived in some protective bubble under her. Even Donald Grant complained of how she placed Krane off-limits from trade consideration. Lorinda DeRoulet didn't value his symbolic role with the team nearly as much and he understandably felt the chill of an Austenian plot developing around him.

When the team went up for sale, the plot became more of a War of the Roses type of deal as Kranepool threw his lot in with another bidding team, and envisioned himself the head of baseball operations or somesuch for them, placing himself on the wrong side of history with a second consecutive ownership group.

The early Doublepon ownership tried hard to bridge back to the past, reacquiring Kingman, Staub, and Seaver, bringing Harrelson back to coach, and bringing Shamsky into the booth. I'm sure full reconciliation with Kranepool was always on the agenda, but Ed's a businessman, and I'm sure he had his price, however modest.

Re: David vs. the Krane

In the summer of '76, after Wayne Garrett had been traded, the Post (Maury Allen, I think) mused about where each of the five final '69 Mets still on the roster would be in five years. Tom Seaver would be broadcasting, Jerry Koosman would be farming in Minnesota, Bud Harrelson would be baseball coach at the University of San Francisco, Jerry Grote would be a rancher in Texas and Ed Kranepool would be the designated hitter for the Kansas City Royals.

I was a little surprised come 1980 that the Krane wasn't given a long look by some AL team. He was only 35 and he was lefthanded. But there were probably business reasons for Ed to stay in New York and it wasn't like he hadn't put a lot into playing ball already.

Mets did indirectly slap him in the 1986 postseason when he appeared in a commercial for the re-election of Al D'Amato to the senate while wearing what was presumably his last Mets uniform top (with the blue and orange collars and cuffs). Mets swiftly let the D'Amato people know they didn't want their trademark in a political advertisement and the spot was pulled.

Re: David vs. the Krane

The bitter sunset, as detailed in his SABR bio:

His relationship with Mets front office, however, slowly headed downhill. It started in 1975, with the death of Mrs. Payson. Kranepool was the only player at her funeral, and her death hit him hard. “She was the sweetest person you’d ever meet,” Kranepool said. “You had a lot of respect for her for who she was, not because she owned the ballclub.”

The new management fell to her daughter, Lorinda de Roulet, with whom Kranepool said he should have gotten along, but didn’t. Mrs. de Roulet wasn’t quite equipped to go from running social parties to running a corporation, and she preferred to rely on Joe McDonald, who’d become general manager in 1974, to make business decisions, instead of Donald Grant.

“I didn’t have a good relationship with Joe McDonald. I didn’t respect him. I didn’t like him; he didn’t know anything about baseball,” Kranepool said. “There were termites who ate away at the organization, and he was part of the termites. Donald Grant got blamed for it, but Joe McDonald was the one who made the trades.”

The sticking point in Kranepool’s disdain for McDonald arose from contract squabbles before the 1977 season. With the advent of free agency, players had more bargaining power and the ability to negotiate multiyear deals, and Kranepool said he needed some time to think over the figure McDonald had offered him.

“I live 30 minutes from Shea Stadium; as soon as I got home, the phone rang--he’d taken back the contract,” Kranepool said. “I said, ‘Joe how could you rescind the contract? I just got home!’ But that’s what he did. I cursed him out and used a lot of not-nice words I probably shouldn’t’ve been saying. And hung up.”

Kranepool alerted Grant of the situation, and the two met at Fahnestock & Company, Grant’s firm on Wall Street, where a phone call to McDonald confirmed Kranepool’s story. “Donald Grant said, ‘You got the contract, and you got an additional $10,000,’” Kranepool recalled. “It was with a handshake that I signed the contract in his office. A three-year contract. When it was up in ‘79, I knew Joe McDonald was not going to offer me a contract.”

As the Mets continued to tailspin back into their form of the early 1960s, Kranepool began hinting that 1979 would be his last year; the rift between him and Mets management was too deep, and he wasn’t getting very many opportunities to play--even as a pinch hitter--so his performance off the bench declined. And the fact that manager Joe Torre--at one time Kranepool’s roommate when the two were players--said little on his behalf, hurt even more.

“Joe Torre knew what my plans were and didn’t protect me at the end, and I never talked to him again,” Kranepool said. “Joe Torre knew the situation. Sometimes, you have to be a man and stick up for your friends. I was the one that was his right-hand man in the three years as a manager, and he knew he had to protect his own job: ‘Let Ed fend for himself.’ To me, that’s being a turncoat.”

Torre would say years later that letting Kranepool go was one of the hardest things he ever had to do.[v]

The final nail in Kranepool’s coffin came during the Mets’ final homestand, when the Mets chose to honor retiring Lou Brock of the Cardinals and did not even acknowledge that Kranepool was probably suiting up for the final time at Shea. He received a short notice in the mail that offseason detailing his release, but not even the original: a carbon copy of the note sent to his agent, Dick Moss. Kranepool filed for free agency, but it seemed more of a formality. After 18 seasons, 1,853 games, 5,436 at-bats, 1,418 hits (for a .261 average), and 118 home runs, he was through.

“I never knew I retired,” he said. “I went from one thing to another.” Kranepool had given thought to what he might do after his career was over; he had little interest in managing, but he felt he might be suited to work in the front office. Earlier that year, he had gotten wind from Charles Payson, Mrs. Payson’s widower, that the Mets might be up for sale, and Kranepool put together a group to buy the team, the package which he presented to Lorinda de Roulet that September.

“And then she put together her friends, her social group, and they bought the ballclub,” Kranepool said. New owners Fred Wilpon and Nelson Doubleday brought in Frank Cashen as the new general manager, and Kranepool left baseball for good.

“I left the Mets when I should’ve been on top, and ended out at the bottom,” Kranepool said. “I can’t have any harsh feelings for the Wilpons and the team.”

He unintentionally stirred up some minor controversy in 1986 when he appeared in a campaign commercial for friend and former U.S. Senator Al D’Amato in a Mets uniform, causing the team to release an adamant statement that it did not take political sides.

I tell you, though, he's a great interview, because niceties like "That's all water under the bridge," and "One mustn't speak ill of the dead" cut no ice with him.

Re: David vs. the Krane

I was a little surprised come 1980 that the Krane wasn't given a long look by some AL team. He was only 35 and he was lefthanded. But there were probably business reasons for Ed to stay in New York and it wasn't like he hadn't put a lot into playing ball already
.

I doubt his career ended because of his NY ties and resulting unwillingness to relocate. It was more likely because he sucked. He always sucked. and at that point he was old and he sucked. The only team he had any value for was the Mets, as an "original Met" and mascot. And when he had used that up, he was done.
It's blasphemy to say so, i know, but there you are.

Yes, he says he "asked" teams not to draft him as a free agent, as they did then, but they still could have.

Ed, with nothing controversial about David, to Brian Costa in WSJ:

"If anybody's going to do it, I'm glad it's David Wright, because he's a real gentleman and a class act," Kranepool, 67, said by phone Tuesday. "He's the marquee player of the Mets. He's their Derek Jeter."

Well, that last part is kind of revolting.

Re: David vs. the Krane

Heck, Costa then takes his pot shots:

"Except Wright's chase for 1,418 will hardly resemble Jeter's pursuit of the Yankees' all-time hits record. When Jeter set a new franchise mark in 2009, he surpassed Lou Gehrig, who had 2,721 hits.

It was an iconic moment, one Yankees great passing another. Wright passing Kranepool will be quite different. According to Stats LLC, the Mets' all-time hit mark is the 28th lowest in the majors, ahead of only the Marlins and Diamondbacks, both 1990s expansion teams."

It's a pot shot because it has nothing to do with Jeter or the Yankees. Heck, not too many teams have had an inner-circle Hall of Famer play their entire career with them to establish that mark.

Re: David vs. the Krane

The way I see it, any time Ed Kranepool gets knocked out of first place on a Mets all-time list, it's an upgrade. Sure, David Wright's 1,419th hit will still be a low total for an all-time team leader, but hopefully he'll push that number well past 2,000 in the next few years.

Kranepool once led the team with 118 home runs. Now we have Darryl Strawberry's much more respectable 252. (How does that rank among other teams? My guess: Not great, but a lot better than Kranepool's hit total.)

Re: David vs. the Krane

The only slightly annoying thing about that Costas comment is that it fails to note that the Yanqui mark for hits was itself not all that high on the list of team marks.
I'm too lazy now to re-look-up the stats, but I remember checking it out at the time Jeter was approaching the mark (to great fanfare from some camps) and finding that it was around average among all teams and lower than that of most of the non-expansion franchises.

If context matters then it shouldn't just matter on one side.

Q: How could the Yankees not have a higher number? With all their quality play? And especially their hitters?

A: Because so damn many of those hitters were taken from somewhere else. And Gehrig died young. And DiMaggio retired young because he didn't want to play once the game got hard.

Re: David vs. the Krane

When Jeter first set the MFY hit record it was three hundred or so hits ago.
He has since passed the likes of Brett, Gwynn, Yount (and will pass Ripken with another two hits) so NOW the Yanx record is higher than KC, SD, Milw and soon-to-be Balt (and maybe a couple others - I'd have to check) but it wasn't then.

And the larger point is that, among all the MFY career offensive records, Hits was the least impressive. Ruth spent a half-dozen years being neither a hitter nor a Yanqui, Gehrig had his career cut short, Mantle walked too much and was two years into retirement by the time he was Jeter's age, Berra caught and so never had the 700+ PA seasons that Jeter has regularly, Dimaggio retired young plus missed several years to the military. and so on.

He's scheduled to break the record two days later, on Friday evening, September 7, at home against Atlanta. That's a six game homestand, giving him some slack, but please Mets, pretty please, don't be like the Yankees and have Wright fake an injury in order for him to break the record at home. Re: David vs. the Krane

KraneWatch gains notice in the Times.

It has become something of a ritual this season, the systemic poaching of Mets franchise records by David Wright.

This year, Wright has set career club marks for runs batted in, runs, walks and, less inspiring, strikeouts. Wright already possessed the highest doubles total in team history, and he ranks near the top of most other offensive categories.

Now, with some effort in the coming weeks, he could seize another mark, by passing Ed Kranepool to become the Mets’ career hits leader. Kranepool, who played 1,853 games for the Mets from 1962 to 1979, collected 1,418 hits during his career.

Wright, 29, entered Saturday with 1,221 games and 1,385 hits. Kranepool’s mark is 33 hits away.

“When you talk about becoming a franchise’s all-time leader in anything, it’s a nice accomplishment,” Wright said.

He added that passing Kranepool would have its own significance. “He was one of those original Mets,” Wright said, “and he played for this organization for so long, it’d be an honor.”

Wright does not place too much stock in numbers. None of the Mets’ individual batting records are particularly high, and Wright has simply outlasted many of the club’s top players of years past, who did not spend whole careers with the Mets.

And besides, players like Kranepool have other honors Wright wants — chief among them, a World Series title.

“I’ve always just wanted my legacy to be that I was a winning player, and I’ve never thought much about numbers or records,” he said. “You see the way that even bench players or role players are remembered from the ’86 team. You see the love that the city of New York has for those guys. That would be nice.”

Such concerns could perhaps play into the negotiations that will determine where Wright’s future rests. The Mets hold a $16 million option on Wright’s services for next season, but nothing beyond that, and General Manager Sandy Alderson declared, early on, his intention to discuss a possible extension over the summer.

But Wright countered that he wanted to hold off talks until the off-season. Kranepool played his entire career with the Mets after starting as a 17-year-old. He was competent, but never a star, and that he holds the hits record is testament to the fact that stars like Keith Hernandez and Mike Piazza spent only parts of their careers with the Mets. Wright, who was drafted by the Mets as a teenager, would break that mold — if he stayed. He was asked how much the lengthy identification with a club, something that is a tradition on the Yankees but not the Mets, mattered to him.

“That’s extremely important,” Wright said. “Obviously, there will be a number of factors. But I’d like to think — and I think other people would agree — that I’m a loyal person. From Day 1, I’ve said it, and nothing’s changed: I love this organization.”

He added, “Although things haven’t gone the way that we thought they were going to go, this organization has done so much for me that I think there’s loyalty on both sides.”

For the most part, though, Wright has preferred to avoid the big picture. After he charged into the All-Star break with 106 hits, a .351 average and 1.004 on-base plus slugging mark, Wright’s production has sagged. Through 15 games in August, Wright was hitting .273 in the second half with a .711 OPS. Wright’s slowdown had coincided with the Mets’ breakdown, and Manager Terry Collins has linked the two.

“David’s not swinging like he was, and we have not had anybody really step up and help him,” Collins said Friday.

Wright acknowledged last week that second-half fatigue had set in, but he did not view that as an excuse. He said he thought he might have been trying to overcompensate for the team’s overall struggles, and his coaches agreed.

“I think David’s probably trying to do a little more than he’s able to do,” said Dave Hudgens, the Mets’ hitting coach. “That’s maybe caused a couple of little things, his body over-rotating, his elbow getting up too high.”

Though Wright has cooled off, Hudgens said, “He’ll get hot again.”

If so, Kranepool’s record could be the next mark he claims. Should it happen, Wright will enjoy the moment, knowing there are other accomplishments he covets more.

“Maybe it’s different in other cities,” Wright said, “but in New York, you’re remembered for winning.”

In reaching the unmagical 1,400-hit milestone, David extended his second-place lead over Jose Reyes to 100 (now 101).

FYI, if Jose was having the same season for the Mets that he's had for the Marlins, the current Met hit record would be 1,452. But that doesn't take into account all the variables, like lineup, ballpark, game situations, the pressure of theoretically signing for a big contract in New York and, most tangibly, the lengths Ed Kranepool would have gone to take Jose out.

In David's past 26 games, when it seems he's done next to nothing, he's actually collected 26 hits (batting .271), so at that one game/one hit pace, figure him for Monday night, 9/24, home to Pittsburgh. OTOH, he had a 26-game stretch in April and May when he garnered 40 hits, a pace that if he picked up again all of a sudden would get him to his necessary 17th hit about a week earlier.

Or we could just wait and see what happens.

There sure are a lotta ways to estimate the date of Wright's impending franchise record breaking hit. Here's the formula I've been using all along in this thread:

171x/y = z

z = Mets game # of record breaking hit (remainders always rounded up, never down);
171 = total hits Wright needed to pass Krane at beginning of season;
x = Mets games played to date;
y = Wright's season hit total, to date.

Thus calculated, Wright is on pace to pass Eddie in the Mets 152nd game, at home against the Marlins on Sunday, September 23, 2012. But as you implied, he'll pass Eddie when he passes Eddie.

in part because Tejada has also slowed down in front of him. That's why he only has 7 RBI in the last 28 games (B-R split, I don't feel like counting to 26) but 12 runs scored. (Thanks Ike) He's been on base 34 times though. 5 doubles, 1 HR, 10 walks.

It's getting some media attention. Although Kranepool's total is wrong, and I can do without that opening paragraph:

Wright nearing Kranepool’s Mets hit record
By DON BURKE

Posted: 1:41 AM, September 16, 2012

MLWAUKEE — It is not exactly Derek Jeter chasing down Lou Gehrig to become the Yankees all-time hits leader. But as he closes in on becoming the Mets all-time leader in hits — a perch he could reach this week — reaching the milestone means a lot to David Wright.

The 29-year-old third baseman entered last night’s game with the Brewers needing just seven hits to eclipse Ed Kranepool’s mark of 1,481 which has stood since 1979. Wright still needs seven hits after snapping his eight-game hitting streak by going 0-for-3 with a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts in the Mets 9-6 loss to the Brewers.

“I hope I get there,” he said. “Obviously, it means a lot to me personally. You just blink and, all of sudden, you have however many hits it is. ... It’s obviously very nice. But it’s difficult because of the difficult second half we’ve had.

“I’m proud of the fact I’ve been able to stay healthy and be as consistent as I think I have for the last eight or nine years. You’re going to have some years, some weeks that are better than others. But I take a lot of pride in going out there and trying to prepare myself to play at a certain level. ’’

Wright said he never envisioned leading the Mets — or any major league team — in anything.

“I was probably as surprised as anybody at the little bit of success I had early,” he said. “It still feels like, at some point, somebody’s going to pinch me and I’m going to wake up. ... To make it and be in the big leagues eight or nine years ... it has been surreal.’’

Maybe, like Kranepool, all of Wright’s hits will come in a Mets uniform. He can become a free agent following next season and the team holds a $16 million option for 2013. The sides are expected to begin discussions on a new deal once this season ends.

Wright said he thinks “it’s important’’ when a player can spend his entire career in one uniform.

This actually happened: Picked out Ed Kranepool at Citi Field Wednesday night. He had gotten up from his seat and headed toward the Delta Romney 360 Club as David Wright was coming to bat in the sixth. David swung and hit a home run just after the Krane had flown out of sight.

Can he not bear to watch? (If so, that would make him like every Mets fan without a record on the line.)

As David approaches the record, I can't get a scene from Harvard Lampoon's Vacation out of my head. Its the one in which Chevy Chase sees the Grand Canyon, pauses for a second, shrugs his shoulders, then leaves to go elsewhere.
Will Wright do the same?

No, let's not do that. Let's wait a little longer so Sandy can see in person what type of player he is. Let's wait until he starts out hot next year so we can make a half-hearted attempt to engage in talks during the middle of the season. Let's let the fans suffer and watch as them as they engage in fruitless "Re-Sign David" campaigns. Let's not move him at the deadline for players who can help us in the future so as to not effect second-half ticket sales.

And then when he hits the open market and has a bazillion suitors for his services, let's talk conceptually about an offer that falls just under what others are offering so we can watch him walk away.
