CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: 2K11 (easy, no cheating edition!)

Yes, the most controversial contest in CPF history is back again, but this time, there's NO CHEATING. How do I know there will be no cheating? Because the correct answers don't even exist yet. They will be counted down over Thanksgiving weekend on Q104.3. Here's how it works. Sign up NOW. When we're all in, we'll take serpentine turns "drafting a team" of songs over X number of rounds (team size would depend on # of participants but let's say 5 or 10). Your songs will then score depending on where they land in the Top 1043 songs that will be counted down Thanksgiving weekend (and hopefully published on the website soon afterward). Each pick scores its corresponding slot on the countdown, and the player with the lowest cumulative score at the end of the countdown gets the championship belt. As an added "wild card" bonus, each player will draft a special song they think will land closest to No. 1000 (without going over). GO AHEAD AND STUDY PREVIOUS YEAR'S RESULTS IF YOU THINK IT WILL HELP. OK? Go!

Do I have to declare myself in or just start drafting? And I get more points for choosing the lower-ranked songs? Then I guess I open (if we are opening) with [crossout:3kgegzrn]"Long Time Gone" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young[/crossout:3kgegzrn]. Oh, I get it. Low score wins. I guess "Stairway."

No no. First we sign up, then I randomize the picking order, then we draft. Lets try to complete the sign up by this week. By the way I am in since I don;t know the answers yet myself.

So, if a low score wins (I prefer giving people more points for guessing the back-enders, but it's your game), how many points does a person get for guessing a song not on the list at all? 1044?

So, if a low score wins (I prefer giving people more points for guessing the back-enders, but it's your game), how many points does a person get for guessing a song not on the list at all? 1044? Yeah, something like that. The bonus "target practice" picks will reward those who find a challenge in later picks. Maybe when it comes to choosing we can each select 3 or 4 at once.

When is the draft? I am out of town from the 17th through the 21st, with limited board access. If the draft doesn't conflict with those days, I'm in.

If we're guessing 1,043 picks instead of 100 shouldn't we do something like five at a time so that it doesn't either become a full-time job or go until next Thanksgiving?

we could do a draft where we pick more each time through 1,2 ,3 etc. Or, I could do something like randomize last year's top 100 into bundles and distribute them to each player. This gives you rooting interests but doesn't really reward your guessing, sorta like mortgage backed securities.

We don't need to guess the song # do we?, like if I draft the polka song do I need to give a guess at where it will land on Q's list, polka song will be # 789?

maybe we could hold an actual draft, where the majority of people are available to be online. try to fit it into an hour or three. those who are not present or think they might not be around could PM in a list of selections to get them through the necessary rounds. (we'd have to trust the holder of those PMs to be fair and not use those lists to inform his own selections... maybe bring in an outside arbitrator...) if your list runs out before the draft is over, you get to autodraft using the prior contest rankings.

Not my game, but I think a draft is too complicated and time-consuming. My suggestion: everybody sends JCL a list of songs (100, 200; however many he wants to moderate) and our scores are based on how those songs chart. Yes, there will be overlap (everyone can submit Stairway and get the top score) but would seem to be fairly easy to score.

wait, what's the scoring? i suggest: =SQRT(104.3)-SQRT(RANK/10), rounded up to next whole number so that: songs 1-14 score 10 points songs 15-49 score 9 points songs 50-104 score 8 points etc etc etc until songs 850-1043 score only one point picking certain round number songs like #500 & #1000 could be worth 10 points each. maybe 30 points for a real nice bonus.

I know it's not cheating, but having last year's list makes me feel like I'm cheating.
