CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft!

16 players!

batmagadanleadoff Nov 09 2011 05:27 PM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
I don't understand. If MetsGuyinMich, for example, picks Stairway to Heaven, is that song then off the board? Or can someone else also pick that same song? Also, how does one get points? How does one win this thing? You left these things out. Where's the rest of the rules? And where's Leiter? How come he's not playing? Who's gonna dis-invite me for pie?
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 09 2011 06:29 PM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
Yes, once a song is claimed it's out. The object is to gather a "team" of songs that have the lowest combined score in the top 1043.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 09 2011 06:33 PM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
If Mole or LWFS or anyone else not yet signed up wants to participate they can, I'll tack them on end until we get through 1 round of pixx.

ah ok, makes some sense now, basically try and draft what we think is the best team?

WOuldnt that give us 12 songs (2 first round, 4 second round, 6 third round)? Just want to be sure I'm clear.

I predict that you will win this contest -- mainly because the draft slotting is highly, highly, highly (did I say highly?) skewed to favor the first few pickers, but especially the first (that's you) -- and coupled with the fact that you've made strong picks, so far -- though the first pick was essentially a gimme -- but that's why picking first is an immense advantage -- the difference between picking first and second here is greater than the difference between any other two consecutive slots -- but we shall see -- you also pick last -- and by the time we get to those picks, there is tremendous unpredictability.

This is like any fantasy draft that I've been in. I actually think that having the wrap around pick at the end is more of an advantage, because as you said, I also pick last, where there is much more unpredictability. I do have to add that I did win my 1993 Rotisserie League with the first pick, mainly because my last pick just happened to be some rookie catcher named Piazza...

batmagadanleadoff Nov 19 2011 10:49 PM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
I'm all mixed up about a coupla things. First off, what's with Leiter picking five songs? Shouldn't he be picking just four? Why should he select a value pick when every other contestant still has two regular picks to select? It seems odd, is all.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 19 2011 10:57 PM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
Interesting. Yes, we used the 2007 list because that's the one I have bookmarked on my browser. The page format has changed since I last looked at it and so has the content, it looks like.
|
batmagadanleadoff Nov 19 2011 11:00 PM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
|
Actually, his Aqualung pick was previously selected, so now what? He essentially made four picks. But if he thought that Yesterday would chart near #1,000, then he probably doesn't want Yesterday as his regular pick. We need a ruling before we continue. Also, since the playlists are unreliable, I nominate you, JCL, to listen to the whole countdown in order to verify the corresponding list's accuracy.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 19 2011 11:26 PM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |

Chad Ochoseis Nov 20 2011 05:25 AM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
|
He may have been thinking that since he was done with the top rawk picking contest, he may as well start with the value picks. As I understand it, they're separate contests, so picking Yesterday for value doesn't take it out of play for top rawk.
|
cooby Nov 20 2011 05:48 AM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
lol, just let me know how many to pick when it's my turn, okay? :)

|
metirish Nov 20 2011 09:44 AM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
|
good question, I thought I was done after two more picks, am I ?
|
Chad Ochoseis Nov 20 2011 10:00 AM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
One rawk contest is never enough, so I think there was an aftercontest going on where we take guesses at the songs that come in 500th, 750th, and 1000th. That might have been what was meant by the value pick.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Nov 20 2011 12:27 PM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
I mistakenly thought that the fourth round would be a 3-pick round. ("Value pick" just meant I thought "Yesterday" had slipped farther than it should.)
|
Chad Ochoseis Nov 20 2011 01:13 PM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
I believe in Yesterday. But I believe even more in Smoke on the Water as an undervalued pick. Also You Really Got Me (original Kinks, not Van Halen).

According to the database I compiled the last rawk contest around in order to prove my damn accusations with, as someone here suggested derisively, “geometric precision” (my db consists of the top 100+ songs from the last 10 Q104.3 countdowns and 15 other classic rock countdowns) here are some of the top undrafted songs, in no particular order, based upon the historical data, naturally:

Doesn't everybody? Like I'm not already used to that here. I'm just too sexy.
Anything could happen. All it takes is for one or two perennial top 40 songs to finish 40 or 80 slots worse than average and the odds shift dramatically. And that happens in every single countdown. So don't tune out.

And we have a Little Wing situation. And another controversy ... I was listening to some of the countdown last night while I was at my computer (there's a link on the Q104 web site for this) and I heard sharpie's pick "Tangled Up in Blue" come on somewhere around the 940's. I also remember hearing The Black Crowes' "Jealous Again". But those songs are not on the countdown list. Go figure. But the larger point is that if the list is inaccurate, then it's unreliable ... and so is the whole contest. http://www.q1043.com/common/top_songs/2011.html?page=3
|
Edgy DC Nov 24 2011 07:06 AM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
I guess one way to demonstrate a score in progress is us all having 6254 (1044 x 6) points until our picks appear. Sharpie stands alone "ahead" at 5519.

It was a fluky finish. Of the 25 countdowns I tracked in my db , Q104's 2007 is the only countdown where WTTM finished in the top 100. In fact, Q104's 2007 countdown, particularly the top 100 portion, is the most atypical Q104 countdown of the last 10 years. WTTM was an extremely risky pick.
|
sharpie Nov 24 2011 09:22 AM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
Well, I'm not one to research multiple lists. I just remember scoring on it last time when it was at 17. I had only picked it because my dentist always plays Q104 and it had played while I was in the chair. Guess that knocks me the hell out.

I recently heard an NPR All Songs Considered show where they talked about the alternative/grunge explosion of the early 90s meaning that one could actually enjoy listening to music on commercial radio again. They cited "Shine" as the moment when that all came to an end.

So I'm working on work today, and I'm at my computer, and I've got this furshlugginer countdown in the background, and they're about into the 190's and they just played Janis Joplin/Big Brother's Summertime. I heard it with my own ears. Both of them.

Yeah, come on. Like the travesty of this list is "Shine." As if.

Now here's a screen shot of the Q104 listen live page. Summertime, which played between Miss You and Locomotive Breath, is omitted.

Here's what I mean: These are the last songs played. But when the DJ announced the latest additions to the countdown, he skipped Suzie Q and New York City, even though those songs were played on Q104, in the order shown, and during the countdown.

The scoreboard has been modified. The “Worst Possible Score” column is no longer in use. Instead, the db will make reasonable assumptions about which songs are not likely to chart in the top 1,043, and adjust each contestant’s score as necessary. The list of "songs not likely to chart" appears at the bottom of this post, and may change -- either expanding or contracting -- as the countdown unfolds. The db assumes that every song in the list of songs that haven’t yet appeared will ultimately chart somewhere in the countdown.

I think that was marathon. He drafted "Eric Clatpton's" Layla. My ace in the hole is to hold him to Clapton's should the eventual points make a difference in my, but not your, quest to win this thing. My db sez that on occasion, but not on NY's Q104, Clapton's MTV Unplugged version charts in the top #100.

Very much a jazz song. May be the highest ranking jazz song not by Floyd in the countdown. Here comes "Italian Restaurant." It's like a jazzy mini-set.
|
Edgy DC Nov 27 2011 11:47 AM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
"Deuces Wild"? This is one of those extra-countdown-y songs, right?

My guess is that it's in at #52. When the song now playing is shown on the listen live page, it's included in the countdown. That seems to be the rule. That the song now playing appears on the last 10 songs played page is, however, no guarantee that the song is part of the countdown.
|
batmagadanleadoff Nov 27 2011 11:52 AM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |

But now Deuces has been removed from the listen live page. So it might indeed be a phantom countdown song.

We don't know what songs charted from about the 80's through about 105. Many of the as yet uncharteds will surely fall somewhere in there. But this countdown is very atypical, perhaps even more so than the infamous 2007 countdown.

The score's closer than it appears to be. I have a 163 point lead over LWFS. But only three of my six songs have charted, as far as I know, as opposed to Leiter's four. If just one of my other three songs charted in that 80-105 Bermuda Triangle, it gets closer. If I've got two songs in that gap, then Leiter's in the lead. Of course, Leiter might also have a song in the 80-105 gap. We need an exit poll.

In theory. But not realistically. Love Reign O'er Me would have to 1044. But it's charted in the top 100 the last eight years, and 9 out of 10 Q104 countdowns --barely missing the top 100 one year.

Both of these were on my mental list for the 500-750-1000 kwiz. But top 100 of all time? Really? I liked metsmarathon's scoring idea (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17107&start=32) because it recognized that the difference in "skill" between picking #5 and #25 was much greater than the difference between picking #725 and #745, so just for grins I took a look at how things would have turned out if we'd used it. It wouldn't have mattered much to the order, but there would have been some ties.

Jazz Radio DJ Nov 28 2011 05:36 PM Re: CLASSIC ROCK CHAMPIONSHIP: Draft! |
I'm satisfied with my result especially since I had a poor draft position and was pretty much distracted by the rest of my life while submitting my picks. Winning one contest and finishing near the top in the next is a testament to the klassik rawk knowledge gained during the many hours-days-weeks of my misspent youth I wasted listening to klassik rawk radio. At any rate I prefer doing well based on my intuition as opposed to spending hours-days-weeks of statistical analysis in order to win. Congrats to batmags for his victory. He certainly worked hard to earn it.

You nailed that post. I fess to catching a slight feeling of ickiness when I chose LOAP. An ickiness that quickly morphed into revulsion after I youtubed the song to get a hear for what I picked. ‘Cause, you know, I’m only vaguely familiar with this Bon Jovi music. That video’ll surely put you in the mood for some grilled cheese sandwich action. With extra cheese. Or am I the only one who’d rather not watch Jon Bon flirting with himself? Is it me or does it sound like Sam Kinison’s on vocals?
I don’t think that you’re aware of the history of the db, Jazz. So I’m gonna tell it to you. The db (that’s initial talk for database) consists of the top 100+ songs in every Q104 countdown, and 15 other classic-rock countdowns, spread nationally – a total of 25 classic-rock format holiday countdowns. The data resides in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. I created it, not to prepare for this rawk contest, but to prove a controversial point that emerged last baseball offseason, in the midst of our last rawk contest. Which I did prove that point with geometric precision even though none of youse bastards will ever concede the point or give me the satisfaction. So you see, the db was created more than half a year before this last rawk contest (that I, the bml won) was ever announced. You might have your doubts about this next one, but I probably spent less time than anyone else to prepare for this draft – not more. Less. All I did was to sort my data according to most historical top 100 finishes in the Q104 countdowns and then, by average finish. This sort, which took me less than 45 seconds to prepare and run, then sorted all the songs in my db from most desirable draft pick to worst. It should come as no surprise that when I first ran the sort, Stairway to Heaven was at the top of the list. After the songs were ordered from best pick to worst, I deleted any song from the list as they were selected by other contestants – my opponents. I presume that everybody else did the same – eliminating from their own pick lists, songs that were previously drafted . Otherwise everyone would always be picking Stairway to Heaven, no? So whenever it was my turn to draft, I always had the top draft picks available at the top of my list. My selection method wasn’t so rigid and formulaic that I always picked the song or songs at the very top of the list. What I did was to quickly eyeball the top 10 or 20 songs and then make my selection(s). This eyeballing never took more than a minute or two. So there.
See comments above, irish. I determined that it would take a score of no greater than 240-250ish to win this contest. Based upon this assumption, it then became apparent that it would be extremely improbable, but not impossible, to win this contest carrying a song that slotted higher than 140, 150. This dynamic proved to be one of the drawbacks to this last contest, in that the format we used wrung most of the suspense out of the competition. If your song came up before Saturday night, you were essentially done for. When I set out to create odds for each contestant, based upon the d in the db, I settled on a formula that practically eliminated anyone who picked a song likely to slot higher than 140. My odds ranking formula pretty much lumped all songs that were likely to finish higher than 140 together, without making precise value distinctions between a song that was likely to chart, say, at 250, and a song that was likely to chart at 900. They were all equally bad picks, as far as I was concerned. I wasn’t so blunt as to say so in my pre-game Odds and Sods post, but in my mind, anyone who drafted a song that was likely to finish higher than 140, had absolutely no chance to win the contest. I posted odds of about 60-1 for some contestants and odds of 200-1 or 500-1 for others, but the truth of it is that according to the db, I thought that there were only five contestants who had any chance at all of winning this. Here are the top finishers, as predicted by the db: (The extremely heavy favorite) 1 batmagadanleadoff – 9-1 (The contenders) 2 DGWphotography – 21-2 3 LeiterWagner – 12-1 4 Jazz Radio DJ – 13-1 (Outside chance to win) 5 MetsMichigan – 35-2 (Outside chance to win/No chance to Win border straddling) 6 Metsmarathon – 25-1 (No chance to win cutoff – best of the rest) 7 HahnSolo – 55-2 8 ChadOchoseis – 28-1 And here’s the actual final order of finish: 1 batmagadanleadoff – 190 2 DGWphotography – 303 3 LeiterWagner – 337 4 Jazz Radio DJ – 356 5 MetsMichigan – 492 6 ChadOchoseis – 499 7 Metsmarathon – 535 Not bad, db. Not bad at all. Take a bow. __________________
I was. But I always usually think you’re nuts. So take that with a saltgrain.
As it turned out, you had a great draft position. Here, it was better to draft at the bottom. Owning Let it Be or Baba O’ Riley was certainly a competitive advantage, but a relatively minor one when those that drafted at the bottom of the first round were likely to have songs that charted no worse than 25-30. The top of the countdown is highly consistent, and thus predictable. The advantage was in the last round with those that not only picked first, but picked twice. The disparity in quality between songs available when you picked last and when DGW picked last were tremendous.
Yeah. This is what killed what appeared to be your excellent draft. But it happens every countdown. You can always expect a handful of perennial top 100 finishers to fall out of the top 100. Not that it would’ve mattered this time around. You would come to see that batmags’ score of 190 is historically awesome, if only we could play this contest like 80 or 100 more times. Like Tom Seaver on Earth Day, 1970. Or Secretariat at the Belmont Stakes. Or Reagan ’84. You guys ran into a buzzsaw.
Yes you are. In fact, if this contest was played in reverse … if Q104 revealed the top song first and the 1,043rd song last, you would’ve been on top of the leaderboard, occupying the top spot for longer than anybody else.
An understatement. Irish had the best two picks. You're all aces irish, and OK in my book.
Yeah, I’m a better sport when I win, aren’t I? Thanks, mich. Cheaters Redux - Had we played this contest under the rules of last winter’s contest, simply tracking the top 100 finishes, only the batmags would’ve finished undefeated (at 6-0). Metsmichigan would’ve been the only other contestant to go as far as 5-0. And we had less contestants in this contest than in the last one (17 to 21). The idea that four contestants could be 7-0 140, 150 picks into the contest without cheating is about the most fantastic thing I ever read on these boards. Bad day (prounounced Bad Day) for Lynyrd Skynyrd – Besides Sweet Home Alabama’s uncharacteristic finish out of the top 100, this countdown marked the worst finish ever for Freebird in a Q104 countdown. TRIVIA -- Eight songs from this years’s countdown appeared in the top 100 of a Q104 countdown for the first time ever. Name the eight songs in one post and if you get six right, you get credit for having the right answer.

My mistake. There are eight songs that finished in Q104's top 100 for the first time ever. Pick eight songs, and if you get six right, you win.

Now you're gonna make me work for it?

Nope. You got less than six out of eight.

Anyone interested in another classic rock challenge? I found an interesting list and would enjoy administering another competition before/during the holiday season. If there's no opposition here I'll start a new thread with the rules and a call for participants.

I might be a little "classic-rocked-out". I'll wait for you to post your rules before committing.

Ok, so I don't want to step on the toes of Lunchbucket as Quizmaster Supreme or batmags as defending champion, but this is the idea I had for the next Classic Rock Challenge.

I'll throw a bone to Bon Jersey here. Peter Frampton's guitar talkbox effect --- though not really initiated by Frampton himself --- made occasionally appearances on radio playlists ("Rocky Mountain Way," "Tell Me Something Good") after Frampton put his signature on it for "Frampton Comes Alive," but it was so distinctive that it was hard for most later bands to use without an audience reaction along the lines of "Who does he think he is? Peter Fuckin' Frampton?" But Bon J, but using it cover the bass phrase, found a new use for it that created a big redwood-sized massive hook. Each BJ single off on that album, really, had an inventive hook of similar proportions. Empty calories, but, you know, sugar frosted.
