Penn State Scandal (split from College Football 2011)

I spoke to Joe Paterno once. I asked him a question about linebacker play. His teams were famous for it. I asked him what he thought about Ara Parseghian having success against the wishbone formation by having his linebackers mirroring the offensive players. He said "I don't know what you're talking about", and moved on to speak to someone else.
A very rude person, especially after I started out with a compliment.

Years later, my daughter was accepted to Penn State. I'm glad she decided not to go there. After the events of this week, I would have had to scrape the decals and bumper stickers off my cars.

Would you? If we stopped associating with a group once anyone also associated with it did something bad, it be hard to support much of anything. I mean, if the value of a Penn State diploma is only as good as it's football team's reputation, sure, but it's still possible that someone went to Penn State and had good teachers and got a good education and never went to a football game and can actually still be proud of that.

I mean, there are still people that support the Catholic Church right?

Re: College Football 2011

This is a systemic, organizational issue. The fact that the acts were known, reported (although apparently not followed-up on) and nothing was done is an indictment that goes far beyond the athletic department. Like Watergate (granted not on a national-impact scale), the coverup, and the persons and positions who covered up these terrible acts, far transcend the acts themselves.

No, I would not be proud to have a Penn State sticker on my car.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the citizens of the town of Sandusky, Ohio are looking for a way to change the town's name, too.

I agree with you 100%.

Really.

I have always found him to be rude too, but just figured it was because he is a New Yorker.

Penn State goes far beyond Joe Paterno and football in my family and my bumper stickers stay.

Sandusky is a vile person who preyed on and raped and sodomized young boys and children, he will hopefully get jailed for many years, and those at Penn State who knew but said nothing should also face justice, vile scum the lot of them.It reminds me of the raping of children in Ireland and the cover up by officials and superiors that knew.

My guess is its been under wraps for even longer.

I hear that Shane Conlan, former All American linebacker at PSU, has blown off the Second Mile golf tourney for years because of Sandusky. I'd like to know more about that. Sounds like Happy Valley (a term I'm sure Sandusky could relate to) should be called Denial Valley.

So, Paterno gets fired late last night and students riot in the town, they say the media exaggerated Perterno's role in this.

Not just about the brand. But also the over-riding instinct is to protect the family.

"My God," you think, "What if I act on this and I'm wrong? Human lives will be destroyed. Lives of people I know. I've got to kick this up to the suits."

It's a sad choice to make (human lives have ALREADY been destroyed), but it's natural. Hopefully, it's less natural this morning.

Apparently he wrote his own way out of town with his statement "In hindsight, I could have done more..."

He likely will spend the rest of his life defending himself against lawsuits from the victims.

Dumb jock douchebag.

Re: College Football 2011

And what about McQueary? You tell him he didn't see what he saw? Paterno claimed McQueary was distraught. McQueary never mentions to Joe ever again that Sandusky is on site with a child? "Hey Joe, there's Jerry with a kid. I'm pretty sure I saw him rape a child in the shower. So much that I could identify the act on sound alone". I'm not buying any of this.

Reality-"Hey Jerry, what the fuck were you doing? Knock that shit off." "OK Joe. Sorry."

I'm going to guess the crew from this news van didn't get a chance to exaggerate the behavior of the students.

Re: Penn State Scandal (split from College Football 2011)

I suppose I could add a thought about how, thanks in large part to ESPN's on-location 'College Game Day' hoopla, college football fans are used to (if not outright encouraged to) getting drunk and acting out for cameras in defense of their [crossout:k5zfgx3o]school[/crossout:k5zfgx3o] team ... but I guess I'm just not cynical enough to do that.

When I heard there was rioting, I thought it was amped-up college kids going nuts b/c their school allowed kids to get raped there. Not the other stupid shit.

Crazy. A sister of one of the victims actually attends Penn State (after what happened to her brother there)!?! Does not blame Paterno for what happened, but does come down hard on Spanier.

Re: Penn State Scandal (split from College Football 2011)

Two things:

When the civil lawsuits come flowing in and the Sandusky camp starts singing the blues of poverty and destitution, do you think anyone will remember that Jerry bailed himself out of jail in December, 2011 with $250,000 cash?

Second, can you believe this maniac was wearing a Penn State Wrestling jacket during his recent arrest. Wrestling? Is this guy fucking with us or what?

I love the word "maniac." I had a colleague who used to use it all the time. So wonderfully descriptive.
