Re: monopolozed

I always thought that the little terrier was very cute, so I'll go for that.

Re: monopolozed

I go horse, then terrier. Because I'm both well-bred and scrappy. (Also, born in the Year of the Horse.)

Re: monopolozed

I always go Yoda first.

oh, we're not playing Star Wars monopoly? well then..

I usually pick the ship. then the cannon. I'm not sure why, as it's been a while since I've played Monopoly, but I think it's because I like the narrowness of the ship.

Iron, because then you can steamroll your opponents.

Re: monopolozed

It's been a while for me, as well. I guess I go for the car first and the wheelbarrow second. I mean, they have wheels, or at least representations of wheels, so they are good vehicles on my road to prosperity. They also have storage space, to put the prosperity in. These are things that an iron, for instance, lacks.

I remember making a point of taking the corners on two wheels.

Re: monopolozed

I choose iron these days, I guess cos I like to iron.

When I was a kid though, my brother had a lead soldiers kit, where he melted the lead and cast his own soldiers. He had this one piece of lead that when it was cooled looked kinda like a dog (to me) and that is what I always used back then. When I think back now, I guess it looked more like a wad of black gum.

Re: monopolozed

The wheelbarrow is the correct answer. It suggests humble beginnings but can also be employed as a moolah transport vehicle.

Re: monopolozed

From Wikipedia:

Each player is represented by a small metal token that is moved around the edge of the board according to the roll of two dice. The twelve playing pieces currently used are pictured at left (from left to right):
[list][*]a wheelbarrow (1937b edition)[/*:m]
[*]a battleship[/*:m]
[*]a sack of money (1999–2007 editions)[/*:m]
[*]a man on horseback[/*:m]
[*]a car (racecar)[/*:m]
[*]a train (Deluxe Edition only)[/*:m]
[*]a thimble[/*:m]
[*]a howitzer, better known as a cannon[/*:m]
[*]an old style shoe[/*:m]
[*]a Scottie dog[/*:m]
[*]an iron[/*:m]
[*]a top hat[/*:m]
[*]A koala is also added in the Australian version of the game.[/*:m][/list:u]
Many of the tokens were created by companies such as Dowst Miniature Toy Company, which made metal charms and tokens designed to be used on charm bracelets. The battleship and cannon were also used briefly in the Parker Brothers war game Conflict (released in 1940), but after the game failed on the market, the premade pieces were recycled into Monopoly usage.[19] Hasbro recently adopted the battleship and cannon for Diplomacy.

Early localized editions of the standard edition (including some Canadian editions, which used the U.S. board layout) did not include pewter tokens but instead had generic wooden pawns identical to those in Sorry!.[20] Parker Brothers also acquired Sorry! in the 1930s.

The mysterious nature of the tokens has to be part of the appeal. I mean, the game starts with statements like,

"I'm always the cannon, I want to be the dog!"

"I can't find the dog. You be the hat."

What? And yet the game has nothing to do with any of that.

I was always the dog. I had a tendency to piss on other people's houses.

I vaguely remember liking the ship but not always having the option of it depending on where I was playing.

Re: monopolozed

I always liked the car. We have a Grand Rapids version of the game and a copy of the Grand Rapids Press is one of the tokens! Sweet!

We made a customized version of Monopoly about ourselves for our wedding, with all the places and things we loved, and set it up at the reception. We should update it someday, maybe even add the kids.

that should be fun figuring out what to replace. "Honey, do we love our kids more than our trip to Hawaii?" "Was that trip to Disney better than my proposal?"

Re: monopolozed

I voted "other". The Monopoly game I grew up playing was the one at my grandmother's house, which I think pre-dated the familiar metal tokens, which I never became familiar with.

I always used the orange token on the far right, the one with the stack of tire tubes around its base.

Re: monopolozed

Not sure why, but I always tried to be the dog. I think I thought the Scottish Terrier was a nice looking dog.
