We appear to have struck seriously against the forces of a nominal ally. What next for America in South/Central Asia?

I'm not sure... but I'd bet a kidney that it will one day come back to bite us in our collective, other-national-tuchus-booting tuchus. From Pakistan? A lot of huffing, some consular damage... and a return to the frayed-but-extant relationship that's there now, until extremist parties take their Parliament in bigger numbers. It does appear they need our money almost as much as they need popular support.

Might explain the 30ish people protesting in Union Square on Saturday. I just assumed it was normal stuff, because it's always something over there.

I can't see any reason that after all this and two prolonged wars time, we should come out of this without a real ally in the region, but that's a strong possibility.
