The time has come to take a song - just one song - from That Little Ol' Band from Texas to the desert island.

I'm a Cheap Sunglasses guy.

Nice groove. Some quirky funk to it. Hot guitars.

It'll be tough entertaining myself with pretend runway shows on this desert island without "Sharp Dressed Man."

Everyone's got a preference, granted. But if we're looking for distilled, bare essence of Top, aren't we talking "La Grange?" (Or maybe "Tush.")

Legs.
While I'm on that island, I can think of that video.

I agree with LWFS in that "LaGrange" is probably the proper essence of ZZ Top but they obviously hit on something magic with that 'Eliminator' string of hits, as artificial as they were.

Gonna think on this one.

In the meantime, I think I've pimped WAINES before, but if not, an Italian trio obviously deeply influenced by ZZT and releasers of what I think will be a Top 5 track of my forthcoming year-end rankings.

Not one but TWO pause-restarts in the thick of that fuzzed out solo around 2:50-3:15 takes this tune -- already over the top -- to yet another level. Yeah?

A psychedelic band featuring the young Billy Gibbons, The Moving Sidewalks, opened for the Jimi Hendrix experience.

Jimi subsequently
[list:2lz4sw1p][*:2lz4sw1p]called The Moving Sidewalks the "best garage band in America";[/*:m:2lz4sw1p]
[*:2lz4sw1p]called Billy Gibbons his "favorite guitarist";[/*:m:2lz4sw1p]
[*:2lz4sw1p]gave Billy a pink Stratocaster, stating "it's too pretty to burn."[/*:m:2lz4sw1p][/list:u:2lz4sw1p]

I wonder if a lesser soul might have been paralyzed by such a benediction.

Gotta go with Legs on this, 1986 I was 10 and this was the song that introduced ZZ Top to me, at the time MT-USA was an Irish music show outta of NY and Legs would have been a staple on there, this was before MTV hit Irish screens.

Re: On the Desert Island With a Detailed Hot Rod

Saw where these guys are recording a "comeback" album with Rick Rubin set to come out next year.

They are worthy RnR HoF band, with a distinct sound, vibe and sense of humor, not to mention the genius marketing behind them that allowed a "Southern Rock" dinosaur to shine brighter than the New Wavers who made so many of their 70s contemporaries look so dated. That said it's difficult to distinguish between their songs, especially the Eliminator group which are all catchy and have great solos but are kinda artificial. So I'm gonna vote for LaGrange.

PS, I'm a Moving Sidewalks fan already.

Almost voted for "Tube Snake Boogie," but went with "Gimme All Your Lovin'." The AC/DC of Southern Rock.

What the world needs now is the Eliminator Girls to make an appearance to rescue the abused and down-trodden blue-collar workers.

I'm partial to the stuff that isn't still beaten to death on FM classic rock nowadays. With the notable exception of "Cheap Sunglasses," the one song from that list that has aged the best.

This is a great song and I've downloaded it. It's kind of like the Spaghetti Western of music.

Re: On the Desert Island With a Detailed Hot Rod

I think of the Asian hot-rodders in Better Off Dead who learned everything they know about English by watching Wide World of Sports. I picture them coming across a copy of eliminator and wondering what to do with it.
