That annual charity thing we do every holiday season

Chad Ochoseis
Dec 03 2011 11:52 AM

You know, where we all pick charities and each person gets assigned someone else's charity to donate to. Work with me here. It's been a long week.

This project is usually coordinated by A Boy Named Seo. As nothing's been posted yet on the topic this year, I'm volunteering to be the coordinator for 2011. ABNS, if you want the job back, it's yours - just let me know.

For you new guys like Mets - Willets Point, this is how it works:

-> If you're in, post the charity of your choice to this thread
-> In about two weeks - call it December 19 - I'll randomly assign each person's charity to another participating pooler
-> Donate some amount to your assigned charity, and let us all know when you've donated. No need to say how much. The standard amount is $20; more is always appreciated.

Post away. Good holiday season, all.

I'm impressed by the work of the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation. The number of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the district is approaching 90 percent. The group provides things for students, such as books, art materials, musical instruments, math and science tools and other items. I've watched them up-close, and they do good work.

Trying to see where on that site you can indicate the donation is for the Joplin, MO/MidWest disaster efforts. In lieu of that for the moment, though I don't know if the system is still up, but

If you would like to text a donation here are the numbers.

American Red Cross: Text “REDCROSS” to 90999
Salvation Army: Text “JOPLIN” to 80888
United Way: Text “JOPLIN” to 864833

Either way, Red Cross of course is a worthy place to make contributions to.

Re: That annual charity thing we do every holiday season

Yeah, I was going to find a few minutes to put together a table summarizing everything. I'd made the magic deadline 12/19, but since the thread has quieted down, I'll move that date up to "sometime real soon - maybe tonight".

ABNS said that he was in, but didn't give a charity. Once he posts with a charity, I'll start the randomizing machine going.

An e-book bringing awareness to these conditions (especially from the kid's perspective) is a good and cool thing, but probably not where I'd want my charity spending buxxx to go. No offense, Steve, and I sincerely hope that project goes well for them.

If anyone disagrees w/ me, then I'll shut my yap & just maybe ocho can just "fix the game" so I draw something else. Again, no offense (via Jason Bay) intended.

I tend to agree with sticking to charity organizations. Not that there aren't worthy independant causes...but I would have mixed feelings about this one.

Doc Tee - welcome.

Personally, I'm in favor of any charitable endeavor as long as it's not politically/religiously oriented, so I've got no issues with Steve's choice. But I did rig the randomizing so that people who had concerns wouldn't draw Steve. The pooler who drew Steve was metirish; if he has any issues, I figure he and Steve can work them out.

Here are the assignments...any other concerns should be taken up with Excel's RAND() function*. The -> means "gives to" so, for example, Edgy gives to sharpie's charity rather than vice versa.

Edgy -> sharpie (Camfed)
LWFS -> G-Fafif (Dana Brand Memorial Scholarship Fund)
Cooby -> TM (Colorado Neurological Institute)
Chad -> MGIM (Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation)
TM -> Rockin' Doc (V Foundation for Cancer Research)
Ashie -> Fman (Celiac Disease Foundation)
Gwreck -> ABNS (Food Bank of SoCal)
JCL -> DocTee (St. Jude Children's Research Hospital)
metirish -> SJR (Donovan and the Dark Side)
Fman -> Kong (Harlem RBI)
TMF -> Cooby (Clinton County SPCA)
G-Fafif -> Willets (Partners in Health)
Willets -> Edgy (Sacred Heart Dinner Program)
MGIM -> Leiter (Oxfam)
sharpie -> metirish (Baby Hearts)
Kong -> Ashie (World Fund)
Rockin' Doc -> Gwreck (Association to Benefit Children)
SJR -> Chad (Gilda's Club)
ABNS -> JCL (Packard Center for ALS Research)
DocTee -> TMF (GKR)

*RAND() means "random" and should not be construed to imply any libertarian political leanings. Merry Christmas. Happy Chanukah. Good Kwanzaa. Joyous Festivus. Thanks for giving.

Re: That annual charity thing we do every holiday season

Steve I looked through the site and couldn't see anywhere to donate specifically to Joplin, best I could do was "disaster relief"

Thank You!

Dear conor,

Donors such as you make it possible for the American Red Cross to reach out with the capability and compassion that embraces those affected by disaster in their hour of need. We are deeply grateful.

The Red Cross, a leader in disaster relief down the street, across the country and around the world, delivers community-based response with the expertise of a global network, bringing much needed relief and comfort to those devastated by earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other disasters.

Thank you for your gift of $25.00 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief that supports our work on the ground as well as the preparation that goes on year round. Whether it's a single-family home fire in your community, tornadoes, hurricanes, or floods affecting thousands across the country, or global crises and disasters impacting millions, the Red Cross is prepared to deliver assistance as soon as it is needed.

At the Red Cross, we understand the importance of being ready with stocks of food, shelter and cleanup supplies in key locations around the world. With a network of nearly 650 chapters nationwide and 186 societies around the globe, we can provide food, safe water and shelter along with emergency first aid and emotional support. In addition, we invest in communities to put plans in place in advance of a disaster to prevent further devastation.

Thank you for your support of our mission. You're helping us respond wherever disaster strikes. On those rare occasions when donations exceed Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters. To learn more about your gift at work, please visit redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Sincerely,

The American Red Cross

Thanks, Steve. One of the people on the boating trip I took in the Mediterranean last June was in the final stages of cancer and died two months later. We all knew she'd had cancer; none of us, except maybe the captain, had any idea that she hadn't been cured. She'd spent a lot of time with the Gilda's Club people, and they were out in force at her memorial service.

On behalf of the students of Grand Rapids, I thank you. I've covered this group and know the people involved. I see things in the schools that break my heart. Among the things the SAF has done is replace every single library in the city schools. Children learn better when they have interesting books to read, and kids could not relate to the stuff in there from the 1950s and 1960s -- I saw one book that said that man might someday walk on the moon!

Re: That annual charity thing we do every holiday season

Got word down the pike that the Pointilist actually doubled down on his donation. Very, very kind.

You just made a payment of$25.00 USD
Paid to

I promised Met Fairy I would match her donation, and we stopped tonight and sponsored three kittens for Christmas. I would have liked to bring them home...

Transmonk, I will be sending a check to Colorado this week

Re: That annual charity thing we do every holiday season

worldfund.org got a late donation today of $25.
Thanks to Chad for running this this year. It's certainly our nicest
tradition of the new year and I'm glad it's been kept alive.

$25 donation made to Colorado Neurological Institute, in memory of my dad, who died from brain trauma after a fall. Thank you Transmonk, for the opportunity!
