2011-2012 Parody Contest!

seawolf17
Dec 08 2011 09:54 AM

CPF Parody Tourney 2011-12

In the interest of speed and time, I'll randomize the list of names and dates and post them in the next post later today.

Rules:
Each participant starts with a list of five Met-related personalities; you're matched up against one other participant, bracket-style, and you each have to pick one of those participants and write a song parody about your person.

One combatant opens a poll thread and posts his/her tune; the second post in the thread is held for the opponent. Then we vote; the winner absorbs the loser's unused players (giving them a total of eight to choose from after the first round, for example) and moves on.

For reference, our last challenge was in Spring 2009: viewforum.php?f=18

Let's do this.

how did I get ranked above my opponent? I was sure I would've been the lowest ranked challenger. and the runner up to the last challenge in the second round... up hill climb, let's go!

so, once we get the list, do we have to use ALL the players? or we can pick and choose?

Re: 2011-2012 Parody Contest!

You choose a player (or other subject) on your list, write some clever thing about him, and if you advance, your list expands to include all the unused players from your opponent's list. Good luck.

Re: 2011-2012 Parody Contest!

Let's try to knock out the first-round games first:

16 metirish vs 17 LWFS
15 attgig vs 18 Ashie62
14 CF vs 19 Ceetar
13 OldMole vs 20 Vic Sage
12 fman99 vs 21 Metfairy

Then we'll pick up the round of 16.

The process: Discuss -- here, in PMs, whatever -- when you'll be ready to go. One person starts a poll thread with their lyrics and, hopefully, a link to the original song in case we don't know it. Then the other person replies with their lyrics/song. Let's try to have NO DISCUSSION until both songs are posted, just so we have songs in the first two posts.

Go!

Bottom 50 guys both. Cook may even be gone by this time next year.

A quickie look at the players assigned (ignoring the coaches, mgrs, years, etc) shows a slight skewing towards the back of the list at the expense of the front but close enough to just be passed off as just random chance.
But there are still 15 Top-100 guys out there and 32 from the top 200 (vs 20 bottom 100 and 39 from the bottom 200)

The Mole/Sage duel raises a question for me: do rhythmic cheats/errors-- skipping a line, e.g.-- factor into your votes at all? How much?

Edgy MD
Dec 12 2011 02:27 PM
Re: 2011-2012 Parody Contest!

Certainly. Good scansion matching. True rhymes. This is part of quality.

How much? Can't say. There can be cleverness in displaying the failures as well as the successes.

Vic Sage
Dec 12 2011 02:34 PM
Re: 2011-2012 Parody Contest!

i vote on the basis of (in declining order of importance):

- how much does it capture the essence of the particular player (or concept) being parodied?
- how funny/clever/thoughtful is the song?
- how close is it to the original song (in terms of structure, rhythm, rhyming pattern, etc.)?
- how much Mets data mining (met info, history and references) does it have?

so i do think fidelity to the original's scancion, rhythmic structure and rhyming patterns matters, i just don't think its determinative, in and of itself. It's a balancing test.

The main thing i DO NOT concern myself with is song choice -- just because i don't happen to like a particular song, or kind of song, or am unfamiliar with the song, shouldn't be a factor at all, as far as I'm concerned, as long as a version of the original song is provided as reference.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Dec 12 2011 02:40 PM
Re: 2011-2012 Parody Contest!

I have to admit-- song choice matters to me a little, at least as a sort-of tiebreaker; some songs are lyrically plastic or otherwise rhythmically easier to work with (think "Let it Be" or "Jingle Bells" versus, say, "Bohemian Rhapsody"), and if all else is equal, I tend to favor the guy who went a bit bolder.

Edgy MD

Re: 2011-2012 Parody Contest!

Yeah, whether you like the song or not, searching for one that will help capture the imagination, serve the subject, and trigger unexpected memory responses from the reader/listener gets points. You know, if you're going to pick a Billy Joel song, picking "You're Only Human" or "I Go to Extremes" may get you farther with me than "Piano Man" or "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant."

Or maybe not.

with regard to song choice -- i guess if it goes to "degree of difficulty", choosing a complex song over an easy one may be a factor to consider. And i'll also give points for the humor/wit/cleverness of a particular choice (i.e, Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds for a player with a famous drug bust, or something like that). But i disagree about giving more credit for obscure songs vs well-known ones. I don't think that matters in the slightest, anymore than genre or style. Giving points to people for digging through b sides and backlists misses the point of the challenge, in my view.

and Mole -- don't let me stop you! :)

Can I get a do-over?

As far as criteria, I think it's all subjective. I'm not even sure I apply the same criteria to two competitions in a row. It's more like "I know it when I see it."

Oh, wait...that's pornography.

Oh, wait...there's a difference?

unless you really, and i mean really nail it, i give more credit to a difficult song than an easy one, particularly if hte easy song borrowed some of the original lyrics.

and i hope to hell fitting in the rhyming/scansion carries some weight. that's the shit i beat myself up on the most.

Someone beat me up over scansion a few years ago, when I thought it sounded perfect in my head. I guess that's why we vote; some people see it one way, some people see it another way. Thing is, you have to bring it EVERY SINGLE TIME if you want to take home the golden microphone.

Re: 2011-2012 Parody Contest!

I used to do a scansion exercise with my poetry workshop students to get them used to the concept and make them feel a little more natural about it -- to eavesdrop on other people's conversations and write down everything you hear someone say in iambic pentameter. Always grumbling, always kids coming back and saying they couldn't do it, and always nearly everyone ending up by not being able to turn it off -- they kept hearing iambic pentameter all around them.

The problem with this is that it skews your natural social responses.

GIRLFRIEND: Last weekend I had sex with your best friend.

YOU: What? Wow, that's great! last WEEK / end I / had SEX / with YOUR / best FRIEND! I can use that!

GIRLFRIEND: No, listen to me -- I even let him fuck me in the ass.

YOU: Even better! I'm gonna get an A!

Oh, and the reason why it's not hard to write a song lyric that scans, even if you don't know what it means, is that you just follow the bouncing ball. You put your stresses -- beats -- where the beats of the song are.

Re: 2011-2012 Parody Contest!

not quite a parody but a baseball-themed song that made me laugh:

Kenesaw Mountain Landis was a bad mother fucker
He was seventeen feet tall, he had a hundred and fifty wives
He didn't do that much except he saved the game of baseball
He put two and two together and he noticed it was four
Now the treachery of Shoeless Joe can't hurt us anymore
And he'll always be remembered as Kenesaw Mountain Landis

Fellow named Joe Jackson was a fielder for the Black Sox
And he always wore his black socks, but he never wore no shoes
He weren't the nicest fellow and he had a couple problems
Cause he drank a lot and he beat his wife and he always acted rude
He killed and ate some babies and he copped an attitude
And the one man that he hated most was Kenesaw Mountain Landis

The mafia said Shoeless Joe
You should really run this show
You should be the guy who owns baseball
And all you really gotta do
Is help us make a buck or two
We'll bet on the other team
You'll lose the game but make it seem
Like nothing could be further from the truth

Shoeless Joe did what they said he dropped a couple fly balls
And he walked up to the pitcher and he poked him in the eye
And in the seventh inning with the Black Sox nearly beaten
There was someone who was watching from his blimp above the stands
Cradling a rifle in his thick and meaty hands
And as if you hadn't guessed yet it was Kenesaw Mountain Landis

Kenesaw said drop that glove
Or I swear by God above
I'll make you regret playing baseball
And Shoeless Joe looked up and saw
The silver rifle's gaping maw
And though no one had noticed yet
His underwear was getting wet
He peed himself in front of everyone

Shoeless Joe was finished but he couldn't quite admit it
So he raised his middle finger up above the other four
And Kenesaw took careful aim and fired a single bullet
And he shot that dirty finger off and he dropped his trusty gun
And everybody in the stands knew that he had won
And today they still refer to him as Kenesaw Mountain Landis

Shoeless Joe left baseball and became a famous pop star
And he asked the musical question is she really going out with him
He had a couple albums and a comeback in the 80's

Re: 2011-2012 Parody Contest!

Yeah, if you wrote it once, surely you can remember half of it and fudge the rest.

Here, I'll give you ten songs:

[list][*]"Night Moves"[/*:m]
[*]"Word Up"[/*:m]
[*]"Don't Fear the Reaper"[/*:m]
[*]"Mack the Knife"[/*:m]
[*]"Making Our Dreams Come True (Theme from Laverne and Shirley)"[/*:m]
[*]"Celluloid Heroes"[/*:m]
[*]"Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?"[/*:m]
[*]"I Think I Love You"[/*:m]
[*]"Let's Get It On"[/*:m]
[*]"La Bamba"[/*:m][/list:u]

None, as far as I can recall, have been used. All are rife with potential. RIFE! Lot's of words. Lots of character. Lot's of joy quotient. I see a parody set to any of these ten, my vote is halfway cast by line two. LINE TWO!

Gal blammit! Show some risk! Where would be today if Gary Carter conceded? Hmmmmm?

Well, I for one am in the Loser's Lounge so I can't post a submission anymore. In fact I'm in the Loser's Lounge partially because I rushed a submission to avoid bringing the contest to a screeching halt (although I may have lost regardless of how much time I spent composing).
