Shots Reported on Virginia Tech Campus

Officials at Virginia Tech reported gunshots on the campus in a bulletin on the university’s Web site on Thursday afternoon.
The initial report described the suspected gunman, traveling on foot in the direction of a recreational sports building on the Blacksburg, Va., campus: “white male, grey sweatpants, grey hat w/neon green brim, maroon hoodie and backpack.”
The university Web site also said that the town transit service had been suspended; students were told to seek shelter and to stay indoors.
The reports of gunshots immediately recalled the April 16, 2007 campus shooting that killed 32 people and wounded dozens of others. The university, which took more than two hours to issue an alert as the massacre was unfolding, was fined earlier this year by the Department of Education for waiting too long to notify students.
In August, university officials locked down the campus after three children reported seeing a man holding what hey said may have been a handgun.
