Hey, I'm more interested in the Nets than every other basketball team that's been mentioned in this forum combined. Of course, that's still not very interested.

I'm sure Kris Humpriies will re-sign with the Nets if they can get Kim to give up her court-side seats.
Yes, boys and girls, I've been a Nets fan since their very first game in the old American Basketball Association. They are the mistreated stepchildren of New York sports and my feeling for them runs very deep.

Re: 2012 Nets

Worthwhile feature on the most solid Nets blog I know of (pretty much the only one), Nets are Scorching: Top 44 Nets of All-Time in honor of 44 years of Nets basketball (and a gaping void during the lockout). Skews relatively recent given the vintage of the writers -- they made a misguided call for No. 1. But good stuff for those of us who never quite got the red, white and blue ball out of our systems.

Yahoo sports is saying that the team has re-signed Kris Humprieys on a one year, $8 million deal.
This gives them one player who can average more than 7 rebounds a game.

Oh, SHIT!
Starting center Brook Lopez broke a bone in his foot in last night's game, and will miss at least three months recovering from surgery.
That puts an end to speculation that Lopez might be traded to Orlando to obtain Dwight Howard.
To replace Lopez, the Nets acquired former All-Star center Mehmet Okur from the Jazz for a draft pick.

Off to a 1-2 start.
One close win and two losses in which they were never really in the games.
The way this team shoots, Kris Humphreys has a chance to lead the league in rebounds.

Nice game against the similarly hurtin' Bulls at Chicago yesterday, though. As much as I'm enjoying the Gotham hooping of late, I would still trade a couple of the Knick starters for Deron Williams.

WSJ visits with the NJ fans the Nets are leaving behind en route to their new life in Brooklyn.

Jersey Fans Ready to Divorce Nets
Though They Tried to Make It Work, It's Time to Go Their Separate Ways
By SCOTT CACCIOLA

Frank Capece attended his first Nets game 33 years ago when his dentist gave him a pair of tickets as a wedding gift. Apparently his dentist hadn't made him suffer enough.

The twist is that Capece, an attorney from Cranford, N.J., got hooked—hooked on a team of "lovable losers." He invested in courtside season tickets. He screamed at officials. He called opposing players "clowns." He said he missed just four home games over the next 20 years: two because of sickness, one because his daughter was graduating from college and one because he was invited to attend an event at the Clinton White House. "That was a tough choice," he said.

For Nets fans who live in New Jersey, the official end for their local team will come in three weeks, when the Nets play their final game in Newark. Then the team will depart for Brooklyn and its glitzy new home at Barclays Center. But many die-hard fans like Capece said goodbye long ago. They were a cast of characters shared the same passion: rooting for the most beleaguered NBA franchise east of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Capece, who gave up his season tickets shortly after Bruce Ratner bought the team in 2004, said he would always have fond memories of the fraternity he formed with several fellow season-ticket holders—most of whom had the financial means to sit near the floor. Capece even gave them nicknames, whether they wanted them or not. There was Danny the Israeli Builder and Gary the Investment Counselor. He knew Ed Marbach, the owner of a wholesale food company, as Ed the Frozen-Food King. Capece christened himself "Frank the Crazy Lawyer."

The thread among them was Rick Lotterman, a ticket salesman. He arranged for lunches with staff members. He got them time with players at summer-league games. They also trafficked in trade gossip, relishing the team's few highs and bemoaning its many lows. Grey Jones, a longtime season-ticket holder, recalled the "Derrick Coleman fiasco" and the "Kenny Anderson-getting-hurt-and-leaving fiasco."

"Lots of fiascos," said Jones, 72, who owns a company that develops driver-safety materials.

Marbach, 59, said the one clear advantage to the team being so terrible was that he got seats closer and closer to the action. And they were fairly inexpensive, at least by today's standards. Marbach said he initially paid about $200 per game for a pair of courtside tickets. They got pricier when the team acquired Jason Kidd and went to the finals in 2002 and 2003—a stretch that Marbach remembers as basketball nirvana.

Those games were a scene, and Marbach said he often arranged to donate one of his tickets back to the Nets to distribute to celebrities who were in town. Marbach basked in the reflected glow of Hollywood royalty. There were actors (Michael Douglas, Bill Cosby) and athletes (Phil Simms, Willie Randolph) and assorted B-list stars ("Phylicia Rashad's husband").

All these years later, Marbach divides his encounters into two categories: celebrities who were nice to him and those who were "jerks." One of the nice guys was Bruce Willis, who attended a handful of games. One night, the TV show "Entertainment Tonight" wanted to interview him courtside. Willis grabbed Marbach and had the show grill him instead. There he was, Ed the Frozen-Food King, on TV. "My two minutes of fame," he said.

For Marbach and others, rising ticket prices were one tipping point. The other was the sale of the team to Ratner. Jones said the team hiked the price of his season-ticket package by 50% the following season.

"They did that at the same time they announced they were moving," he said. "And I thought, 'Geez, that's quite an interesting business strategy.'"

A team spokesman said that the Nets "deeply appreciate the support of our fans during our time in New Jersey. We have built great relationships with many of our most loyal fans and will always remember their dedication to the team."

Marbach quit going around the same time. By the end, he said, he was shelling out about $100,000 per season for his two courtside seats. He was able to deduct about half of that as a business expense, but he could no longer justify the cost.

"The other thing that I don't miss is that I had to be 'on' all the time," he said. "When you're on the front row, people are looking at you, people are talking to you. So I used to dress really well, wear nice suits, make sure my shoes were shined—even on the weekends. I like a little anonymity now."

Capece broke down and bought tickets to a game two years ago. He was more curious than nostalgic, and as soon as he arrived, he knew he didn't belong there. Capece, who said he's happily married, likened it to a divorce. "You just don't care anymore," he said.

He still has fond feelings for what once was, however. If he ever needs a reminder, he can visit the self-described "fabulous" Nets paraphernalia collection in his basement.

There, he has game-worn jerseys from Kerry Kittles, Stephon Marbury and Keith Van Horn. He has another with his own name stitched on the back, along with the numeral 1—a gift from the team trainer, he said. One of his most cherished possessions is the game ball from a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Capece said the Nets awarded it to him after he harassed the Lakers' Orlando Woolridge into missing four late free throws.

Capece said his mouth sometimes got him into trouble. He cited the game he heckled Darryl Dawkins, then a young center with the Philadelphia 76ers. In hindsight, it probably wasn't the smartest idea to call the 6-foot-11 Dawkins "stupid." The fallout, Capece said, was that Dawkins decided to wait outside the arena for him after the game. The two patched things up when Dawkins joined the Nets in 1982. "He hugged me and he laughed," Capece said.

Like Marbach, Capece said he was paying a small fortune for his seats, and the price had climbed from $40,000 to $60,000—and beyond. When he got his final bill, he recalled a line that a New Jersey politician once gave him: What's the most expensive form of transit in this state? An ego trip.

Capece also struggled with the notion that he would essentially be paying $80,000 to help the Nets move to Brooklyn.

"That seemed stupid to me," he said. "Besides, my wife wanted a new kitchen."

Yes, I think so.
Ian Eagle has been the voice of the team for many years, and is a nationally- known and respected announcer.
Fratello has a good basketball mind, and has worked with Ian for a while.
Like any two co-workers, they can get on each others nerves once in a while.
From the tones of their voices, they both seemed to realize that a mountain was being made out of a molehill and they milked the gag to see where it would go. You can tell when someone is smiling when you hear their voice, and I think they were both smiling by the end of the video.

if you just include their NBA rosters (1977-PRESENT):

PG: Jason Kidd / Kenny Anderson
SG: Vince Carter / Drazen Petrovic
SF: Richard Jefferson / Bernard King
PF: Buck Williams / Kenyon Martin
C: Derrick Coleman / Darryl Dawkins

If you include ABA years: add RICK BARRY, JOHN WILLIAMSON, BILLY PAULTZ and of course DR. J.

Re: 2012 Nets

Williamson played his last three Nets years in New Jersey. In one of them he averaged almost 30 PPG, so I think that because of his career Netliness, he belongs on that all-time team.

Ashie, I also have followed them from their first ABA season, playing in that Armory. Over the years, I have rooted for them like you would root for the runt of the litter to one day grow into the "big dog". Today, I found something I wrote 10 years ago, when they almost won it all.

Last Night I Cried

Erin Brockovich lost that class action suit.

Indiana Jones dropped all the magic stones in the river.

Last night I cried

I cried for Drazen Petrovik , "Super" John Williamson and Wendell Ladner. I cried for Dr. J., Buck Williams and Billy Paultz, too. And I also cried for LaVern Tart, "Trooper" Washington and even…………. Kim Hughes.

Last night I cried

The team that used to play with a Red, White and Blue ball; a team that plays in a place from where you used to be able to see the Twin Towers, couldn’t win the first National Basketball Association Championship after September 11th.

It would have been so right.

Last night I cried

We all lost

****************************************************
Tonight, in their last home game as the New Jersey Nets, they lost again. I didn't cry as much.

Super John was a great player, but he only played 1 full season (77-78) with the NBA Nets in NJ. The 30 PPG "season" you elude to was only a 1/2 season (76-77); the other half was played in Indiana. He also played 1/2 season with the Nets in 79-80, splitting the year with Washington, where he finished his career the following year. His longest period as a Net (73-76; 76-77 was another 1/2 season split with Indiana) was when they were in the ABA, not the NBA, and not in NJ. That was why he didn't make my list. Technicality, i know, but these exercises are always about defining your terms.

Re: 2012 Nets

When I saw Bernard King on your list, I figured you must've meant Albert. I knew BK had been a Net at the beginning of his career (as well as the end), but I hadn't realized he was so good so early. A short tenure, but yeah, a defensible vote.

Petrovic was a revelation. First white guard in a generation who could penetrate from the outside like that. Went strongly to his right and left, too. If I recall correctly, the NBA barely made a whimper in acknowledging his passing.

I like the logo a lot. I like its simplicity. It does look like something they might have come up with 60 or 70 years ago. I also think it would work as a nice baseline. In years to come they can jazz it up with some color or they can make it a little more 3D if they need to or want to.

So, let's see where they are:
Re-sign D. Williams - check
Acquire an all-star shooting guard to team with Williams - check
Re-sign Gerald Williams - check
Sign their draft pick (shooting guard) - check
Sign leading scorer in euroleague - a 6'8" forward - check
Acquire good defending/ rebounding power forward - check
Re-sign center Brook Lopez - check
Re-sign power forward/ center Chris Humphries - TBD
Trade Lopez and Humphries in multi-player deal for Dwight Howard - RATS!
(Why couldn't Howard's agent told him to "just say no"?)
Still a pretty solid club.

And as long as Prokorov can still keep writing those checks, who knows?

Re: 2012 Nets

Now that they're out of Joisey and in my beloved Brooklyn, and with the Knicks continuously shitting the bed (see latest: Lin, Jeremy), i guess i should pay some attention to the Nets.

Let's see:

starters: Deron Williams / Joe Johnson / Gerald Wallace / Kris Humphries / Brook Lopez
rotation: CJ Watson / Marshon Brooks / Mirza Teletovic (r) / Reggie Evans / _________
bench: Sundiata Gaines / Jerry Stackhouse
IR: TyShawn Taylor (r) / Armon Johnson /_______
*Bojan Bogdanovic / Ilkan Karaman / Tornike Shengelia - all will play overseas

That's a pretty good starting unit, but with shitty depth, and without a legit center to back up Lopez. They still need to sign one, maybe just bring back Sheldon Williams. And if the Nets can carry 5 PGs, why couldnt the Knicks carry 4? but that's another subject.

But if this team's starting unit stays healthy, i see a run in the playoffs. They won't win the division, much less the conference, but it'll be better than its been around there since Kidd played for THEM.
