The NHL tries real hard to make the Winter Classic a must see TV event, but to me the game looks kind of dumb in a huge stadium, maybe it's the various layouts to accommodate the rink but it all feels so forced.

There is a new M&M character, Ms. Brown.

The unveiling of the new M&M’s character Ms. Brown on Monday leaves us with a sadly nostalgic taste in our mouths. Maybe it's the lighting, but doesn’t she look like the discontinued tan M&M of yesteryear (it made its final appearance in 1995, after which is was replaced with blue)?

“She’s kind of feminine, she’s smart, savvy,” Neil Patrick Harris explained to The Globe and Mail. He added that Barney Stinson, his lustful “How I Met Your Mother” character, would “peel her to her chocolate core.”

I like his version, too.

Now, along with the Yo Gabba Gabba songs, Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" (mostly because of the "HEE hee" and "G'on girl" interjections) and the Clarence Clemons-Jackson Browne chestnut, "You're A Friend Of Mine" (the Clemons-bellowed chorus, really) are on her "repeat" list.

I first heard about it in 2008, where there was actually a site devoted to locating them. Had a family friend bring one from Rocky Point on Long Island (apparently they have a big St. Patty's day parade out there?). Second time found it in 2009 driving from the Mets-Tigers game in Lakeland Florida towards Port St. Lucie.

then they started rolling it out more regularly, I guess through popular demand or something.

I imagine it'd go really good with some whipped cream vodka, or godiva chocolate liquor.

I remember having them when I was a kid on Long Island in the 1970's.

Here's what Wikipedia says:

The Shamrock Shake was first introduced in 1970.[1] Rogers Merchandising in Chicago created the shake. James Byrne, the executive artist at the firm, used a family recipe for the shake. Shamrock Shakes were widely available across Canada and the United States until the early 1990s. They were recently brought back and are still available at select Canadian and American stores during the month of March,[1] as well as in Ireland.[2]

Cane toads. They've wiped out entire species of snakes, spiders and goannas. Since they are not indigenous to Australia their predators have not adapted to their toxin. So they also have managed to wipe-out some their predators too, and grown to plague proportions. You often hear a "splat" while driving your car in Queensland.

Btw, if you want to insult a person from Queensland, call him a "cane toad".

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2012

Ben - that was us after the opener, except we made it home around 8.

Ashie - it isn't hard. Once you find the link to the box score here's what you do (all in a row, without any of these spaces)

Type
Paste the link

Type >

Then type something descriptive like Boxscore

Then type

So for today's game, it was

Box Score

But all in a row without the spaces and on the same line.

eh, on the whole their pricing is actually pretty fair, not as dramatic as a ShopRite on the weekly specials but on an everyday basis you should do OK there particularly if you can get by on store brand goods. Whereas ShopRite will entice you with dirt-cheap ads but punish you if and when you buy anything at full retail. It all pretty much comes out in the wash $$ wise so I'd suggest you go where you trust the fresh stuff, get the best service and/or/and is most convenient.

Hard to compare Trader Joe and Wegmans, they really are apples and oranges.

I'm going with the somewhat ersatz 1970s version of Bobby Vinton, Peter Lemongello.

Assuming that's accurate I remember nothing of his actual songs or specific L.I. connections. My only reasons for remembering him at all is his totally silly, though apparently real, name; that he was once spoofed on SNL as 'Peter Lemonmoodring' (Chevy Chase) a lounge-style singer so sensitive that he would actually turn different shades as he crooned various color-themed songs; and that he was a cousin of one-time Houston Astros pitcher Mark.

I Wikipedia'd the Lemongellos because I recall some sordid crime incident involving one or more of them although I couldn't remember the specifics of who or what.

Turns out it was the ballplayer Mark (apparently known for having a short fuse while playing) who, in 1982 a few years after leaving baseball, was arrested along with a former minor league teammate for the kidnapping and robbery not only his singer/cousin Peter but also his professional bowler/cousin Mike Lemongello. Mark was eventually sentenced to ten years probation after he pled no contest to the charges

My son identified it as either a rat snake or Cottonmouth snake. My son prefers to catch and release into the nearby woods any nonvenomous snakes that he may encounter. I, on the other hand, prefer not to get too close and feel that if the snake wanted to live it would have stayed the hell away from my house. Fortunately for this snake, my son was with me, so he had a chance of surviving. Unfortunately for this snake, he turned out to indeed be a venomous cottonmouth snake (confirmed after it's death).

OK so "near-fatal" is probably hyping it a bit but whatthehell

I, on the other hand, nearly ran over a snake on this morning's bike ride.
Not sure what kind - probably harmless but I didn't hang around to ask him. Dude was sitting right in the middle of my lane on the bike path but, with no one coming the other way, I had the space and time to go around. I also tried to point it out to the jogger I had just passed some 50 ft earlier but I suspect she didn't catch what I was trying to signal. If not she was about to get a big surprise seeing as how she'd be approaching it much slower than I did and without the tires and metal between her and the pavement.

I'm taking the fact that the snake was just hanging in the path and didn't seem in a hurry to get to the other side as a sign that there was probably no chicken there.

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2012

Today is Manhattenage

This evening marks the start of the Manhattanhenge season a series of celestial alignments that set the streets of New York aglow with perfectly centered sunsets. And if for some reason you can't take Manhattan, there are other opportunities elsewhere over the course of the year to experience a straight line of sunshine.

Manhattanhenge, sometimes known as the Manhattan solstice, occurs every year around Memorial Day and major-league baseball's All-Star break — a coincidence that the Hayden Planetarium's director, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, supposes will lead future archaeologists to conclude these spots on the calendar marked important rites of summer.

Tyson's the one who came up with the term "Manhattanhenge" to describe the alignment of the setting sun with New York's east-west streets. Think of it as a modern-day, unintentional version of Stonehenge, with New York skyscrapers standing in for the stones of the 5,000-year-old monument in England.

Stonehenge was constructed to have its stones line up with the rays of the sun on important astronomical dates such as the summer solstice. Manhattan's street grid, however, doesn't line up with the solstice or the equinox. The relevant streets, which reflect the Commissioner's Plan of 1811, are offset 29 degrees from east and west. That would spoil the sunset view on an equinox or a solstice — but on the proper dates, the sun reaches the cleft between skyscrapers just in time to set the streets aglow.

Tonight, the just-right time is 8:17 p.m. ET to see a classic half-sun, sitting right at the horizon in the gap between the buildings. On Wednesday, New Yorkers can see the sun's full disk just touching the horizon in the gap at 8:16 p.m. ET. There'll be a replay after the summer solstice, with a full-sun viewing at 8:24 p.m. on July 11, and a half-sun opportunity at 8:25 p.m. July 12.

People step out into the street to photograph the sunset along 34th Street, aligning with the Manhattan street grid during "Manhattanhenge" on July 13, 2001, in New York.

To enhance your Manhattanhenge viewing experience, Tyson suggests positioning yourself as far east as possible, while still making sure you can see New Jersey when you look west across the avenues. "Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, 57th and several streets adjacent to them," he writes in his viewing guide. "The Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building render 34th Street and 42nd Street especially striking vistas."

Thanks in part to Tyson's efforts, Manhattanhenge is the best-known of the modern-day monumental alignments. The clear prospect to the west between New York's towering buildings makes for a nearly unbeatable scene. But other locales have their own "Henge" dates, due to the unintentional effects of a street-grid layout or an architectural feature.

And just for Edgy:

Baltimorehenge: The sun lines up with downtown Baltimore's street grid for sunrise on Sept. 18 and March 25, and for sunset on Sept. 29 and March 12. The Baltimore Sun's Frank Roylance explains it all for you.

And if he wins a championship, that usage will increase by at least 100%. Especially on ESPN.
But that usage will drop back down to "a whole lot" once football starts.

The thing is that the NBA, even more than the NFL, is such a star-driven sport that any discussion of the Finals going on can't just be limited to the game itself, it has to also be a whole psychological analysis of the players involved and none so more than King James. Will he? Won't he? He can't just win, he has to win while being 'The Man'! Michael & Magic wouldn't have sat out with leg cramps in the 4th quarter! He sucks! He's great! He chokes! He's the MVP! He needs to win one! One isn't enough cuz he promised Seven! and on and on.

Yeah, like I said, this one has been "known" for a while although confirmation always remained in 'no comment' limbo.
But he did reveal the truth this past weekend apparently and leave it to the NYPost to jump all over it (so to speak)

Anderson’s sexual orientation -- and refusal to discuss it -- has been a pop culture punch line for years. 'Out' Magazine took a jab at Cooper in 2007, making him the cover boy of an edition dedicated to “The Glass Closet.” Out, five years ago, called Cooper the No. 2 most influential gay American. Anderson said he wanted to keep his private life private for the sake of his journalism career.

Anderson to 'The Daily Beast': “It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something - something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true,” he wrote in an email to the online mag. “The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud. I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn’t mean an end to a small amount of personal space,” Anderson wrote. “But I do think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter’s shield of privacy.”

For the most part these days, helmets are helmets. Bike helmets - as opposed to say football or other sports helmets which are built to withstand multiple small impacts - are designed to absorb and protect against a single and potentially high-speed fall. If a bike helmet takes the impact of one of those it should be replaced.

But while they used to be heavy, hot, uncomfortable and ugly, now there's no reason not to wear one because anything made recently is likely none of the above.
What you're paying for as prices get higher - and Lord they do get higher - is for super-light with super-cooling vents as opposed to merely light and cool. But super-light really only matters if you're racing or riding long distances and I'd defy most riders to discern the difference even under those conditions.

So mainly what you should do is make sure you get a good fit. There are usually two or three general sizes with pads of varying thickness that stick inside the helmet so you can fine-tune the exact size. Then just adjust the straps to where the fit is snug since without the proper fit the helmet could shift during a fall and not protect your coconut at all.
Maybe the guy at your local shop has a particular brand favorite but I think you're just splitting hairs at some point. If it fits, doesn't feel like a weight, and looks semi-cool you should be good to go.

The Danbury area of CT was the hardest hit of anywhere in the State in yesterday's storm. Ten roads were blocked by water and/or falling debris.
When I was preparing for the storm, I was taking down my deck table umbrella and got stung by a wasp that was inside. My hand is still swolen and painful, despite taking antihistamines and icing it.

aw, tell me again the story about how you met my father.

i'd love to hear it again. how you met once where he went to a restaurant in a hotel where you were a server, and he went back a few times and then he couldn't get you out of his head, or something, and then 7 months later he finally saw you again, and then a year later a bun was in the oven, and that bun is my half brother who's, i dunno, about, oh, two years younger than me.

awesome story. such romance.

really. tell me again the story of how he left my mother. i love to hear it.

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2012

I had a long drive to and from Detroit for an assignment yesterday, so I decided to listen to U2's "No Line on the Horizon." I'd earlier declared to friends that I thought the album sucked -- and I like U2 -- and that the five-star rating that Rolling Stone gave it shows that Rolling Stone also sucks and it would give U2 five starts for anything.

Some time has passed since then, and I wanted to see if I had been too harsh.

I decided that I was only slightly too harsh. "Magnificent" is, well, magnificent. I like "Moment of Surrender" and "Unknown Caller" and "White as Snow" are OK. The boots song is embarrassing and the rest is decidedly "meh."

Still a huge disappointment, because I expect a lot more from U2 that one great song and and several OK ones. I know they can't all be "Achtung Baby," but the last two had so many more good songs.

That sleepy stuff doesn't really affect me. (conversely, caffeine doesn't keep me up) I've tried Benadryl and Advil Cold and Sinus. So diphenhydramine and Pseudoephedrine and neither has had much effect.

I tend to use over the counter stuff from CVS, depending on my specific symptoms.

But one thing that's safe at work is hot lemonade - you can put a mug of it in the microwave. It's soothing and has aromatherapeutic properties (and, at very worst, it can't hurt anything).

Feel better!

I switched from Time Warner to FIOS a few years ago, and one of the primary reasons was to get these two channels. I don't watch much of the NFL Network itself, but I'd compare their level of coverage to what the MLB channel does.

The primary benefit is that you get those Thursday night prime time games. Moreso this year, since they have a game scheduled every week on Thursday for the first time.

And the NFL Red Zone channel? Man, it's the best. Six straight hours of NFL coverage, without commercials. It's tough to go back to watching a single game after that.

Highly recommended.

With any luck, the new series will be arriving on Netflix sometime in 2013 (here are all the details on how it'll be released), but now‘s the time to dust off those old Arrested Development DVDs to rewatch the show start-to-finish because the new season will be overflowing with in-jokes and callbacks, and it’ll benefit you to have the first three seasons fresh in your head.

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2012

I was in the car with MK yesterday, picking up his learner's permit from the driving school (because in NJ you can't just get a learner's permit when you turn 16 - you have to pay a small ransom to a driving school for six hours of "professional" lessons before they'll allow your parents to take you out in the car). I was driving home after our errand (I don't let anyone drive my car because it takes me forever to fix my seat settings once they've been changed, and at my height anyone else who wants to drive my car would have to adjust the settings). On the same one-way street as the driving school, as I was moving over to the left lane to make a turn onto a major road, a car barreled down at me. Luckily I was able to get back into the other lane; I looked at the signs, and confirmed that I was driving the correct way on the one-way street.

And THEN, if that was not enough, not five minutes later, while I was driving on the major road, a car decides to make a left turn right in front of me! I was able to swerve to avoid him, and luckily didn't hit anything else in the process. For the rest of the ride home, my hand was shaking like a leaf.

So now MK understands the fact that when he's out on the road and I want him to check in, it's not that I don't trust him - it's that I don't trust the random idiots that drive among us.

Alligators are infesting my local Pathmark's parking lot. And I don't live in Florida.

A second alligator has been found in a Baldwin supermarket parking lot.

A 2- to 3-foot gator was found in the parking lot of a Pathmark store around 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, police said. A second alligator measuring 3-4 feet was found in the same lot Wednesday afternoon, WCBS 880?s Sophia Hall reported.

[...]

Authorities said it is likely someone dumped both gators in the grocery store parking lot. The two alligators will be sent to Florida to live at a reptile sanctuary, Hall reported.

Some shocked shoppers reacted to news of the second gator.

“I think it’s horrible. Scary and horrible,” one woman told Hall.

“Nothing surprises me anymore,” a man said.

This is the third gator spotting on Long Island in less than a week.

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2012

So we live in New Jersey. Here is yet another reason why it's a deathtrap and a suicide rap and we should get out while we're young....

MK has his learner's permit. In a normal state that would involve going to Motor Vehicles on my son's 16th birthday to get him his permit. But in New Jersey, to get a permit at 16 one first has to pay for and go through six hours of driving lessons through a professional driving school (if you can't afford to do that, your kid has to wait until he's 17 to start learning how to drive. I want to know how many palms were greased to pass through that legislation....). In other words, despite Governor Christie's bluster about wanting to keep the government out of our lives, in this state D-Dad and I did not even have the option to teach MK how to drive (well, not without making him wait an entire year first). It's infuriating.

So we went through this process back in August, and MK got custody of his permit after the requisite driving lessons were completed.

Everything was fine until Monday morning, when D-Dad was going to let MK drive to school and the permit couldn't be located. MK then realized that he drove on Thursday, and neglected to take the permit out of his pants. Of course, said pants went through the wash, and the permit was shredded.

So in a normal state, I'd take MK to Motor Vehicles to get a replacement permit. But this is New Jersey. First I had to take MK to the driving school for him to complete new paperwork (it required his signature). Then the driving school went to Motor Vehicles to do what they had to do. Today I picked up the permit from the driving school. However, the story doesn't end there. The permit still had to be validated, which is something the driving school cannot do on its own, which meant that I had to take MK to Motor Vehicles as soon as he got home from school today.

I verified at Motor Vehicles that if this ever happens again while MK is 16, I will have to to through this entire ordeal anew.

So I have the permit encased in a (hopefully) waterproof wallet. If it goes through the wash again, at least it has a fighting chance of remaining intact....

Dennis Franz did alright. David Caruso appeared once or twice as a hoodlum.

Ed Marinaro got that great gig in Sisters.

Steven Bochco shows Dennis Franz got to be in:

[list]Hill Street Blues twice --- they killed one of his characters and brought him back to play another guy.

Bay City Blues --- played the pitching coach in a show about a minor league baseball team.

NYPD Blue --- starred in it end-to-end. Four different partners, I think.

Civil Wars --- appeared in the pilot, before getting the NYPD Blue gig instead.

Beverly Hills Buntz --- not a Bochco production, but he gets partial credit for this crazy-assed HSB spinoff, as it was his character that Frantz spun off with.[/list:u]

Oct 09 2012 08:53 PM
Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2012

I wasn't counting Caruso as I was thinking of the everyday cast, the type who, at the time, were probably knock-around actors getting their first big break but were also still young enough to where they could envision better things after that show ran its course now that they had a gold star on their resume.

Of them, Franz was really the one exception that I found, staying mostly in TV but graduating to top billing in several cases even if playing a similar type again and again. The rest of the cast, while continuing to work, not only never got gigs as good as good as they had in HSB but mostly seemed even to go backwards, winding up in small roles in lesser shows, in one-offs or short arcs in various spots in TV land, and even soaps and small-town theatre. Not that any of that isn't honest or even noble work, it's just that no one seemed to be able to leap to better coming off a landmark show that garnered both popular and critical acclaim.

Travanti went on the headline in various things, TV movies and the like, but of course he already was the headliner in HSB

The downfall of Armstrong has to be the most undercovered sports story of the year.

Lance Armstrong himself has said that the story of his team is about how it “evolved from . . . the Bad News Bears into the New York Yankees.”

I'd strip of his titles just for this terrible (though unintentionally appropriate) analogy.

However, as demonstrated in thisReasoned Decision, the achievements of the USPS/Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team, including those of Lance Armstrong as its leader, were accomplished through a massive teamdoping scheme, more extensive than any previously revealed in professional sports history.

Samsung, specifically the Galaxy S3. i guess I have brand loyalty, since that's my phone, upgraded from the S1. (was I allowed to skip the S2? Do I lose street cred for not being incremental?) Of course, I have Verizon which insists on not releasing updates in any sort of timely manner to make full use of the phone.

Those commercials are funny. It's a neat way to advertise the features of the phone too.(not that I ever use the S-Beam) They've been running variations of them for a while I think. I'm amused that it's come down to the two companies suing each other now too.

To be fair, the Planet was bought by a media comglomerate in the comics in the early 1970s, so from 1970 through 1986 Clark Kent was a news anchor for WGBS and during the last 5 or so years of that run his co-anchor was Lana Lang! Lois was still as hard boiled as ever with the Planet during these years.

It took a major reboot of the character to make him a newspaper man again in 1986. And interestingly enough, this is pretty much the first time since the 1970s that DC has shied away from the fantasy of a venerable newspaper thriving in modern times where dailies are ceasing production left and right.

Sources in Christieland tell me there was never an actual ask made by the Romney campaign.

When did verbs decide to move in so aggressively on noun territory? Was it when people on Facebook started making an ask for a "recommend"? Or is it payback for "impact" taking on resonance as a verb (something my father scoffed at -- or gave a scoff -- thirty or so years ago)?

OTOH, I hear the rides at Christieland are amazing.

There's a romanticism in the medieval monarchy stuff. Castles, kings, successions. These things make great stories, and we don't really have any of our own history along those lines (or, this IS our history, depending how you look at it).

Of course, that doesn't mean we have to obsess over the current crop of them, but that's celebrity culture these days. It's not much different than say Paris Hilton or the Kardashians. famous because they're famous.

The media has gotten it, although the people haven't. If you talk about it/them, they're famous. Look at all these shows lately. Honey boo boo, hillbilly hand fishing, etc. They're on tv, therefore they are talked about, despite there being absolutely nothing special about them. In a way, it's the same for things like Orange County Choppers and Ace of Cakes. Does Duff on Ace of Cakes actually do something different than many other high-end bakeries around the country? Wouldn't other bakeries gladly make huge creative sculptures of cakes if they were on TV and someone was paying them to do so?

Ha, this rant got a little long. I feel like we're going more towards a society who's opinion isn't formed based on what the news and media tell us, but we haven't quite gotten there yet.
