That's a really cool shot. You don't get a lot of time with raindrops I imagine, but did you consider moving around to try to get a more interesting object, house or somethig, in the reflection? (Although the sunset is pretty cool)

I might play with that another time. I was losing my light quickly yesterday, though, and didn't have too much time to worry about composition. But that's something to shoot for (get it ) another time - thanks for the suggestion :)

merde!

it appears that my camera is hosed. shutter mechanism is stuck. i'm looking at about 6 weeks or more without the camera, and $150-200 for the repair, if the internets are to be believed.

the internets do suggest there's a easy fix - crack open case, fiddle with a plastic gear, and lube it up. and while i'm ok with cracking open the case and fiddling with a plastic gear (which did return functionality to teh camera albeit only briefly), i draw the line at applying a random lubricating agent onto the inner workings of my camera. applying the wrong one will surely result in a far great problem, i fear, and may not even address the problem.

needless to say, i'm a little upset.

Re: Cheese 2012!

I think my camera might be failing as well. (granted it's not as expensive, since it's 'just' a point and shoot) Normal pictures are starting to come out a little grainy and it's pissing me off. I also seem to have gotten some moisture or something into the viewfinder, because everything looks fuzzy through it now. I think I've taken like 30000 pictures with it though..

Re: Cheese 2012!

it makes your photos all vintage-y. in some ways the vintageyness makes up for hte lackluster perofrmance of the phone's camera, relative to a real camera. at least it does for the iphone. it's a gimmick, sure, but it can sometimes make a dull photo a little more interesting, if not necessarily artistic and worthy of interest. it also has some selective focus effects that you can slap onto your pics.

there are of course various apps that do the same thing but don't have the buzz....I've downloaded several of them and rarely use them I find....still , nice to have Instagram and will play with it for a while...

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/04/ ... r-android/

key lines

” After playing with Instagram on two Android smartphones, I found the new app does provide a UI that’s consistent with the iOS version, but there are, however, a few missing features: Tilt Shift/Blur, Share from Feed and Live Preview are nowhere to be found. Also, depending on what Android smartphone you’re using, the app experience can vary slightly.

It does _read_ spammy. but the website seems legitimate, the address on the web matches the address in the 'email' and if you google

currently doing the editing of book titled, tentatively, “Física”.

you find the comment on some other Flickr pages but nothing that would be considered spammy and no references on Snopes or anything.

Perhaps they really are just searching Flickr for pictures for a low-budget educational textbook.

Speaking of Instagram, I am really liking it now....some really creative people out there , agree with C that the UI needs work and what's with needing to crop pix you happen to bring in from your gallery?

MF, Scott Kelby has a great book on Lightroom....I'm finding it easier to use that PhotoShop Elements......there are also several sites with videos to get you going......it's an excellent program....great for organizing lots and lots of files....best to shoot in RAW to get full benefits though.

started uploading a daily* Mets picture to Instagram to see if I can get any use out of yet another social media site. Still sorta annoyed with it. Have to crop anything that's in my gallery app but not taken on my camera to upload it. Have to make things square. Seriously? who takes square pictures? I guess the idea is to force you to use the Instagram app for picture taking as well, but I don't know why I'd want to do that.

Re: Cheese 2012!

well, the idea is to give it a vintage-y square photo look. like a polaroid.

it's much better to take the original with the regular camera, and then post-process it in instagram, imo. it gives you a better ability to plan the shot, and re-edit it if you're not happy with the results. also, the orginal shots are higher resolution that what instagram gives you, iirc.

it's not as free-flowing, i suppose, this way, but if you wanted to just shoot from the hip, you could try hipstamatic, where you have no control over the results only the "lenses" "film" and "flash" that you use for the shots.

Here's a trick , use the default instagram camera.....save it but don't publish it....then take image to whatever other editing app you want and when you pull that image back into instgram you don't need to crop it.

well, my point is that, in order for the signpost to accurately be displaying that it lies on a straight line between kuala lumpar and bangkok, which are separated by ~1200 miles, hte signpost would need to either be in the middle of hte sea of thailand, or on the opposite side of the earth (roughly 1000 miles southwest of the galapogos islands in the pacific). since it appears to be on land, i surmise that the arrows are not pointing in the correct direction, nor are they necessarily intended to.

the distances appear to be accurate, for what its worth, leaving hte larger point, wherever you are, you're reallly far away from everywhere else. like on a whole 'nother continent or something.

I think part of it's just that the camera is old.. but the Samsung Galaxy S3 is pretty nice..and even makes calls if you really need. ;-) New camera's on my list, but it's a long list. The 12x zoom is basically it's best feature at this point.

Some more comparisons. Prague Castle at night (cellphone inset) Camera clearly wins, with the optical zoom helping. I think tweaking of the cellphone light settings could narrow the gap though.

Inside Prague Castle is St. Vitus Cathedral, which has gone through many many updates and revisions after constructions tarted in 925 AD. The structure there now is a Gothic Cathedral was founded on 21st of November, 1344, when the Prague bishopric was raised to an archbishopric. The cellphone picture is on the right. Not sure if the angle, particularly the candle, threw off the left image.

The Race Not Run

I was supposed to run the Beauty and the Beach race in Long Branch, NJ last Saturday. Hurricane Sandy had other ideas, and the race was understandably canceled.

The race organizers had a shirt/swag bag pickup yesterday, and friends of mine made sure that even though I couldn't run the race I would get my goodies.

Instead of finisher's medals, Beauty and the Beach gives out little sandal necklaces. This year's necklace is purple, as is the nice long-sleeve tech shirt.

Hopefully Long Branch will be rebuilt and events such as this will take place again soon....

Google stitches together my photos into an animated gif if I take a lot of pictures of the same scene:

That's pretty neat. How many images does Google require? Which Google tool did you use? (In other words, how do I find it?)

5 I think.

I automatically upload every photo taken on my phone to Picasa/Google Albums/Google+. That's it. Took a bunch of pictures, looked at my web album and the stop-action gifs are there.

Which park is that?
Some group used to bring juggling toys one day a week out to Brayant Park for lunch-timers to use when I worked near there a bunch of years back.
Good a way as any to kill an hour.

yeah, it's Bryant Park. Haven't tried it yet, need to practice my club juggling.

other publically available options in the park include reading, listening to piano/accordian, putting, ping pong, and some other weird lawn game that I don't recall the name of. Also movies and language learning depending on the day, and if you're lucky, John Franco is handing out free ice cream (okay, that was just once, but the truck may return)

I never even knew which group it was who was sponsoring it, but they would show up once a week or so with lender goodies for whoever wanted.
Then for some reason they stopped showing up, and then I left the job so I never knew what happened to it all.

or, what happens when i have a photo on my iphone in a dark room, and toss said iphone gently into the air in front of a camera on a long exposure, such that the phone rotates slowly within the vertical plane with teh screen facing towards teh camera and that at hte apex, the picture autorotates just enough that the original image is somewhat recognizable and stable and not just a smudgy smear, and especially when said original photo is conducive to such a treatment with a strong radial symmetry. also known as what happens when you find yourself strapped for a subject, well over a thousand days into taking a photo a day.

this is that original photo.
