Benjamin Grimm Jan 24 2012 08:01 AM Re: 2011 Oscar Nominations |
I'm rarely able to have much of an opinion on these things. The only movies I've seen from the entire list are Hugo (with several mentions) and Rise of the Planet of the Apes (with one).

The nomination of "Extremely Loud ,,, " for best picture is unexpected.

I've seen exactly zero the movies nominated.

Interesting that they "only" went with eight when they had the option of going with as many as ten In the end it's going to come down to "The Descendants" and "Moneyball" - ELAIC isn't getting good enough reviews (which makes you wonder what it's doing here) - TREE OF LIFE was more a critical fave but didn't have enough popular appeal - THE HELP has that whole political correctness thing going on which will get it some smaller awards (like supporting actress) but not this one - HUGO; too much of a kiddie flick - THE ARTIST; I have nothing to say about this movie - MIDNIGHT IN PARIS; Woody had enough trouble getting wins when he was on top of his game - WAR HORSE; probably has a better shot at winning Tonys than Oscars Of the ones I saw (Moneyball) I select Moneyball

Mets – Willets Point Jan 24 2012 08:40 AM Re: 2011 Oscar Nominations |
If they're going to nominate so many for Best Picture, why don't they give out more awards too. Maybe a bronze, silver, gold Best Picture trio.

Ceetar Jan 24 2012 08:45 AM Re: 2011 Oscar Nominations |
I ended up not seeing a ton of movies last year. Not that I was intending on seeing most of the ones on the list of nominees.

especially irksome when they purposely overlooked GIRL WITH DRAGON TATTOO, which was clearly one of the best movies of the year.

To say nothing of Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1.

I loved The Artist - I'm glad to see that it did so well and hope that it wins some of the trophies on Oscar night.

Whoah, how about a hand for the movie that most divided the Crane Pool electorate? Surprised to see only nine Best Picture nominees? How about two best song nominees?

There are as many nominations for John Williams scores as there are total for Best Original Song.

Musicals (all animated) from 2011 that couldn't manage to garner a nomination: [list][*]Happy Feet 2[/*:m] [*]Rio[/*:m] [*]Winnie the Pooh[/*:m][/list:u] I'm certain I heard a closing credits song or two in 2011 that must have been worth a crap.

I have to say, your daughter has quite the potty mouth. Seriously, not even Breaking Dawn could produce an original soundtrack song up to the nominating standards of, say, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"? I tell you, from Woody Allen to Baz Luhrmann to Wes Anderson to directors of far lesser talent, the notion of the original song seems to be slowly fading from movies, in favor of directors playing DJ, using material with a proven track record of exactly what kind of response it'll get from an audience.
|
sharpie Jan 26 2012 10:10 AM Re: 2011 Oscar Nominations |
I read somewhere that a panel of "experts" (which includes Eric Clapton) make the determination for best song. Any song has to have something like 80% of the votes to make it (Hall of Fame style) to a maximum of five. If no song makes it, then the category doesn't exist that year. However, if one song makes it, the second highest scoring song gets a nomination too. So, we don't know if both of them cleared the bar this year.

Never underestimate the Francophobia that pervades American society.

There's also a lot of Franco-envy -- not that I believe that's the reason it's going to clean up on the Film/Director/Actor awards, I'm just sayin'.

The Artist is the best film i've seen since Goodfellas, but unfortunately it's not going to win at least one of the holy trinity of Oscars.

themetfairy Feb 26 2012 09:19 PM Re: 2011 Oscar Nominations |

It says something about the predictability of these things when Meryl Streep winning is considered the night's biggest upset.

A few weeks early for this question, but, why is this night different from all other nights? Later
|
Vic Sage Feb 27 2012 08:18 AM Re: 2011 Oscar Nominations |
it was a rush to the past, with the 2 big winners (ARTIST, HUGO) being nostalgic homages to the history of cinema, Christopher Plummer and Meryl Streep winning Oscars, Woody getting another screenplay award, Scorsese getting passed over again, and 9-time host Billy Crystal mixing things up in an easily digested stew. Even the ridiculously out of place Cirque bit was typically atrocious for Oscar telecasts in the 70s and 80s.

He won for Beginners? I thought I had put up a thread about that film six months ago, but can't find it now. I seem to remember starting a conversation and it going nowhere. Must've been in the secret forum.

I think Twitter made it worse, though I couldn't stay way. In fact, I have yet to come across any 'popular' TV event that's not routinely sarcastically criticized on Twitter.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Feb 27 2012 05:59 PM Re: 2011 Oscar Nominations |
I think Twitter made it look worse because 3/4 of the jokes made online are funnier than anything-- ANYTHING-- they put on screen last night (and honestly, AMPAS and NARAS and the NFL should thank GOD that Twitter and real-time social-networking exist-- they're the only reason live-televised events still draw decent ratings). The truly shocking thing about his Sammy Davis impression isn't that it was in blackface-- it's that he was aiming to get laughs with a SAMMY DAVIS JR. impression. I'm pretty sure I heard a J. Edgar Hoover drag joke in there, too.

Ceetar Feb 27 2012 06:58 PM Re: 2011 Oscar Nominations |
|
oh, not just this one. Things that I think are at least passingly interesting get routinely slaughtered on Twitter. It's like amateur hour. There seems to be this sense of obligation to these events that don't exist any more. Many people watching (me included, although if my wife didn't put it on, i wouldn't have) hadn't even seen half the movies. Maybe I'm just a curmudgeon, but I imagine it stems from the people interested in a particular part of a show aren't tweeting about it, they're watching, and the people that don't find it interesting use that time to complain.
