Danny Herrera and Fernando Martinez.

Whoah!

Re: Waived

not quite a Woah yet. If it's indeed true, it might mean nothing more than removal from 40 man.

And there's also the option of being pulled back.

Re: Waived

fuh...

I'd have guessed DJ Carrasco and Armando Rodriguez.

I know it was mostly smoke and mirrors but Herrera was the bees' vagina last year.

Re: Waived

I don't have no ESPN access, but if these are truly revocable waivers, then the Mets better clear some room in the next 24 hours, because there's no space to pull them back to.

They could certainly clear, what with the health questions on Martinez and the height questions on Herrera, but I imagine an American League club might be curious.

I like Herrera. Can't see the downside to waiving Carrasco. I guess he gets to declare free agency if he gets farmed out, but...

...there's that whole guaranteed contract thing. You think they're eating $1.2 million? No way.

Re: Waived

It's a spent cost. If they've lost faith in his ability to outpitch the last guy on the roster, why not?

And it's not necessarily eaten. He could certainly clear waivers. And he could possibly accept a demotion.

We can dispute what it its, but there's a dollar sign on the value in Martinez and Herrera, also. We can just as easily decry the "loss" of the $1.4 million signing bonus Fernando Martinez got back in the olden times, plus the hunnerts of thousands in medical expenses.

Re: Waived

I also like Herrera. That slow pitch got a few outs last season although the Mets think that the pitch loses its effectiveness with familiarity. He was half the "bounty" for F. Rodriguez so I'm surprised that they gave up on him this quickly.

Re: Waived

Martinez is out of options, so unless he made the team as the fifth outfielder, this was going to happen. Of course, going out and getting a fifth outfielder will necessitate somebody else being waived, too. I'd have given him the chance, personally.

I don't understand why Carrasco is still on the 40. He'd clear waivers, unless somebody does us a favor. If he opted for free agency, we'd still save some money if he spends any time on somebody else's major league roster. Herrera may not be anything special, but he's more valuable than Carrasco.

I'd hate to think we'd just let these guys get claimed when there may be room for the both of them.

Re: Waived

Fernando Martinez? I wonder what the Mets could have gotten had they dealt him when he was still considered a "prospect", now he's gone the way of Milledge and Escobar, trade-bait gone rotten

Very poetic.
Very true.
There are a bunch of "imperfect" major leaguers.
They're called designated hitters.

Trying to figure out exactly what this means. Have the Mets cut ties with him for good, or does he come back with a minor league deal if not claimed by another team?

Re: Waived

He's still Mets property if he's not claimed. They'd be able to put him in the minors and off the 40-man roster.

I don't know if another team that claims him would have to put him on their 40. If so, then that might be a deterrent.

yes, they do. It's possible Sandy asked around a bit about trading him to judge interest and has an educated hope that he'll clear.

I'd say it's probable. How educated that hope is and how much stock Sanderson is placing in it are further matters, but there have been whispers for several months that the Mets were looking to move on from the Martinez adventure.

We'll find out soon. But him playing 'everyday' in the minors without eating roster space is probably the best option.

not sure about a "hope" that he'll clear, but perhaps a realization that nobody would give up anything of any worth for him...

Fmart became someone not worth trading for, but worth giving a shot.
