Nomination for clueless owner of the year? Jim Crane of the Houston... Whatevers?

“We had the Colt .45s and everybody liked that one,” Crane said. “So you can imagine how upset they were when we switched that. What you get when you look at the fan base is the older we get and I’m old, you don’t like to change. But the younger fans are very receptive to change and the older ones aren’t, so that’s what we saw with the American League.”

Yep, looks like Jim Crane wants to change the name of the Astros. Which is fine, except his reasoning just sounds ridiculous, especially in terms of "the younger fans made me move to the American League."

Re: Houston Bees?

I've always thought the Astros name stopped making sense once they retro'd their logo and moved into a ballpark that paid homage to a 1911 train station. Still, name-changing is a serious leap.

I recall stories surfacing in the 1981-82 offseason that the Mets were thinking they might want to find a new identity. This was on the heels of shunting (as it was seen then) Bob Murphy to radio exclusively plus installing a new manager and generally making with the new broom after two years of new ownership. Predictably, whatever trial balloon that was being floated got shot down. It was the first time I saw business guy Al Harazin's name in the paper, issuing a denial that noted how beloved the Mets were in 1969 or words to that effect as an explanation for why they'd never dream of changing the name.

Unfortunately (or from our perspective, just as well) the Astros don't have that kind of equity to hang their non-orange hats on. When you watch the Mets Yearbooks, you're reminded just how large 1969 loomed year after year in the Met consciousness. When they had nothing positive to report (which was mostly always prior to 1984), they found a way to insert 1969 into the conversation.

I thought that too, but then I kind of got this steampunk vibe that the team suggested a notion of the leap to space as a natural extension of the rail revolution.

Re: Houston Bees?

I think the move to the AL gives them a good reason to change names. It closes the book on the NL team's history and allows them to start a new chapter, with all the merchandising possibilities that entails. It can vest a new generation in the team. It's not like the "Astros" have this illustrious history they would be turning their back on, but to the extent they want to, they can still celebrate the special players and seasons of their past. They could even reclaim the "Oilers" name. or go with Tornadoes, or Power, or some other non-space age appellation.

Known more commonly as the Houston Buffs. One who was Buff was John Hernandez -- Keith's dad, in the late '40s.

Keith's dad met Keith's mom -- a Buffalo gal, if you will -- when he was playing for Houston. Without the Buffs, there's no Keith. Without Keith, who makes the play on that bunt in Cincinnati after Mitchell and Knight are ejected?

Ralph always talked about the size of the mosquitoes in Houston. Keith hints at the birds and the, well, bees.

Sael of the City of Houston

On Monday February 17, 1840 at the regular City Council meeting a resolution was passed authorizing Mayor Charles Bigelow "to procure a seal to be styled, the seal for the City of Houston, Texas."

Dr. Francis Moore, Jr. was a state senator and former mayor of Houston. It was he who had the original seal designed. The top half of the seal bore the words, "City of Houston." The bottom half was originally empty. Dr. Moore was paid $50 for the seal, and "his honor the Mayor, caused the word 'Texas' to be cut on said seal."

The center of the seal bears "The Lone Star, symbol of the newborn nation of the west...... the 'Noble locomotive', heralding Houston's spirit of progress; the humble plow, symbol of the agricultural empire of Texas, from which Houston would draw her wealth - by the iron rails."

Whoa. The Houston Take Your Fingers From My Hairs.

Most of the real Texas icons -- Cowboys, Rangers, Stars -- are already taken. The train motif is really cool, but I don't know of anything short enough for a team name. One of the high school teams here is The Railroadmen, which is too long for sure. The Gary minor league team has a train theme -- the Rail Cats, because you have have a stupid animal mascot in the minors.

the real new jersey jersey can be found north of 78, and west of 287. i would even argue that the eastern and southern bouandaries could extend to the parkway and route 1, respectively, but no farther. if you're south of 1 you're in the no man's land of the turnpike corridor, and then you're into the philly-infused areas. up north, well, hudson, essex, and bergen counties are close enough to the city that you could refer to yourself as being from that area, but really, once you start to climb first mountain, you've gone far enough to no longer just be across the bridge.

and lets please not confuse the jersey shore with new jersey. ever.

MLB Leaks New Astros Logo, Inexplicably Blames Hurricane Sandy

The Astros are headed to the AL next year, and with a new league comes a new look—a blue and orange rebranding (because the Mets are totally the franchise you want to evoke) and a lone star logo. We know all this because it has leaked repeatedly in the last few days. First, it was merchandise at local sporting goods stores. Then it was Astros-branded iPhone cases sold online. MLB offered a public apology to the team for the leaks, and for ruining their official launch party this coming Friday.

Then they went and leaked them again, on the Astros’ official website. Go to the roster page, and after you’re done marveling at how the Stros don’t have a single marketable player, click on anyone and their profile shot shows them in the new duds.

We have to presume this is part of an official-unofficial rollout, staged leaks to build buzz. (Is it working? Did you know about these new unis until just now?) The alternative is pure incompetence, with a truly bizarre explanation. An @MLB tweet from this morning:

MLB Advanced Media, in advance of super-storm Sandy, inadvertently posted photos of players in their new uniforms on @Astros.com bio pages.

Would really love to know what one has to do with the other. I guess it was very important that East Coasters saw those hot new unis before they lost power.

Just can't get enough of that Gawker Media Brand Snark. Logo looks great! Nothing to do with the Mets.

Yeah, Deadspin , Gawker, same company?

The logo is sweet, draws from their past schemes.

That's some aggressive retro, Houston. I'm not sure how the striped-side alternate will look and play but I like the idea.

Rhetorical question: What the fuck are the Astros doing in the American League?

Re: Houston Bees?

Which makes me wonder: to what extent did the having the Astros to beat up on help the Cards in the Wild Card race?

Being a six team division has certainly been a disadvantage (particularly relative to the AL West) with regards to title hopes, but having the two worst teams in the league to beat up on for 32 games had to provide some consolation while pursuing the consolation prize.

Uni Watch presented some good mock ups for the Astros. What Houston unveiled are pretty much the Nationals unis with different colors and an H-star on the cap. Boo!

The Carlos Sosa designs are pretty cool.

Seconded on the Sosa stuff-- it's retro-futurism, which kinda makes it stand out among all the tasteful throwback-y masses.
