Yep, looks like Jim Crane wants to change the name of the Astros. Which is fine, except his reasoning just sounds ridiculous, especially in terms of "the younger fans made me move to the American League."

Edgy MD Jan 24 2012 09:05 AM Re: Houston Bees? |
It would be a pretty powerful symbol of the death of America's ambition for space exploration.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 24 2012 09:10 AM Re: Houston Bees? |
I think it was 80 million dollars that made him change to the American League.
|
G-Fafif Jan 24 2012 09:19 AM Re: Houston Bees? |
I've always thought the Astros name stopped making sense once they retro'd their logo and moved into a ballpark that paid homage to a 1911 train station. Still, name-changing is a serious leap.

Oh, and A+ for the thread title, Vlad.
|
Edgy MD Jan 24 2012 09:24 AM Re: Houston Bees? |

I thought that too, but then I kind of got this steampunk vibe that the team suggested a notion of the leap to space as a natural extension of the rail revolution.

I confess. I don't get it.

John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 24 2012 09:34 AM Re: Houston Bees? |

I wouldn't give them credit for that. Seemed like McLane was Wilpon-like in his deafness to the history of the club he owned.
|
Benjamin Grimm Jan 24 2012 09:36 AM Re: Houston Bees? |
My guess... the Boston Braves had temporarily renamed themselves the Boston Bees at one point, but the name didn't stick.

I was thinking it might have to do with the Killer B's of the Biggio/Bagwell days.
|
Vic Sage Jan 24 2012 09:44 AM Re: Houston Bees? |
I think the move to the AL gives them a good reason to change names. It closes the book on the NL team's history and allows them to start a new chapter, with all the merchandising possibilities that entails. It can vest a new generation in the team. It's not like the "Astros" have this illustrious history they would be turning their back on, but to the extent they want to, they can still celebrate the special players and seasons of their past. They could even reclaim the "Oilers" name. or go with Tornadoes, or Power, or some other non-space age appellation.
|
Edgy MD Jan 24 2012 09:48 AM Re: Houston Bees? |

Oh, sure, largely accidental perhaps, but a vibe nonetheless.

I looked up what the team name was when Houston was a minor league city, and it looks like the answer is the Houston Buffaloes.
|
G-Fafif Jan 24 2012 10:16 AM Re: Houston Bees? |

Known more commonly as the Houston Buffs. One who was Buff was John Hernandez -- Keith's dad, in the late '40s.
|
G-Fafif Jan 24 2012 10:18 AM Re: Houston Bees? |

If they go in this direction, I can feel "the Houston Energy" being the focus-grouped result. Which would be a heckuva MISL team name.

G-Fafif Jan 24 2012 10:24 AM Re: Houston Bees? |
Keith's dad met Keith's mom -- a Buffalo gal, if you will -- when he was playing for Houston. Without the Buffs, there's no Keith. Without Keith, who makes the play on that bunt in Cincinnati after Mitchell and Knight are ejected?

batmagadanleadoff Jan 24 2012 10:25 AM Re: Houston Bees? |

Was this anecdote retold on TV recently. The details are so fresh in my head, as if I heard this tale 20 minutes ago.

G-Fafif Jan 24 2012 10:28 AM Re: Houston Bees? |

Keith's brought it up on the Houston trip each of the past two seasons.

batmagadanleadoff Jan 24 2012 10:31 AM Re: Houston Bees? |

You're exactly right. In 2010, he retold the tale during the beginning of the Mets game in Houston that Nelson Figueroa started for the Astros. I recall because I watched this game two days ago.
|
Benjamin Grimm Jan 24 2012 10:44 AM Re: Houston Bees? |
Well, then my vote is for naming the team the Keiths.

Frayed Knot Jan 24 2012 10:53 AM Re: Houston Bees? |

As per Keith explaining in his book about his life-long comfort at hitting against LHPs, John Hernandez was a lefty.

Whoa. The Houston Take Your Fingers From My Hairs. Most of the real Texas icons -- Cowboys, Rangers, Stars -- are already taken. The train motif is really cool, but I don't know of anything short enough for a team name. One of the high school teams here is The Railroadmen, which is too long for sure. The Gary minor league team has a train theme -- the Rail Cats, because you have have a stupid animal mascot in the minors. I bet they keep Astros.

metsmarathon Jan 26 2012 10:11 AM Re: Houston Bees? |

the real new jersey jersey can be found north of 78, and west of 287. i would even argue that the eastern and southern bouandaries could extend to the parkway and route 1, respectively, but no farther. if you're south of 1 you're in the no man's land of the turnpike corridor, and then you're into the philly-infused areas. up north, well, hudson, essex, and bergen counties are close enough to the city that you could refer to yourself as being from that area, but really, once you start to climb first mountain, you've gone far enough to no longer just be across the bridge. and lets please not confuse the jersey shore with new jersey. ever.

The Locos (has a Spanish double meaning, which is cool) The Railers (phallic, very intimidating) The Spikers (very phallic, almost philthy) The Spikes (another double meaning, referencing the rail industry as well as baseball shoes)

Yeah, get it right. The real New Jersey is an amalgam of The Sopranos, Charles in Charge, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, with a lumpy helping of Stand by Your Man, the short lived but visceral Rosie O'Donnell/Melissa Gilbert FOX vehicle.

it's right on route 17S like 2 miles away, so anytime I want to go anywhere south unless i can take the parkway in which case I bail earlier. But it's on the way to the Turnpike, to Velocity 17, to Sweet Avenue Bake Shop, and Giants stadium. I've never been inside though.
