Kurt Loder's Music News 2012

Shman Shmalen announces a big time 2012 tour supporting their first record with David Lee Roth since 1984, released in 1984, I think.

I want to see a unification tour.

I could look this up myself, Kurt, but wondered if you could tell me whether this tour includes all the original 4 VH members. Recent lineups replaced Michael Anthony with one of Eddie's kids, I think.

I remember years ago Sammy and Eddie being interviewed on Irish radio from London while on tour, a caller asked them if they ever planned on coming over to Ireland and Eddies response was well logistically it's hard yyybbb : but you guys can come see us in England".....yeah fuck off you asshole was my thought.

Re: Kurt Loder's Music News 2012

I think Conor should announce a "Fuck off you Van Halen assholes" tour.

Yeah, the absence of Anthony is definitely part of why I have this vision for a unification tour. Bring Anthony. Bring both singers. (Heck, bring Gary Cherone.) Have them alternate blocks of songs, and roll everybody out for the encore. Wolfie can swing between guitar and bass, Eddie can swing between guitar and keys. Hagar can add some guitar while the big crazy monkey man is singing.

It's sort of an accident of history that Wolf has debuted on bass, as that was simply the first chair that opened up in the band. If this is going to be Wolf's band someday, he's got to get back on the geetar track.

Re: Kurt Loder's Music News 2012

I saw them on their last tour with Wolfgang and wrote a scathing review on these pages somewhere.

Based on that show I wouldn't pay a dime to see them if Valerie Bertinelli, Mackenzie Phillips and Schneider were doing leg kicks and wearing spandex behind David lee Roth. They were terrible.

Nice. Out-stalked.

Not that I had a crazy jones for Amy. I only bring her up not out of some long tortured desire, but it was her (or perhaps her older sister Sari) who I saw in a 1984 tee-shirt, and made a note in my mental "Things to Know About Wimmen" notebook: "Stop being such a music snob ---- sometimes, pretty girls like stoopid music."

It was something of a revelation, though it shouldn't have been.

Re: Kurt Loder's Music News 2012

My missus recognized the harmonica lick from "Love Vigilantes" immediately. Combined with him using that guitar arpeggio from "8-6-7-5-2-0-9" in "Radio Nowhere" and the Smiths synth string droning in "Girls in Their Summer Clothes," late-model Bruce's mining of more effete eighties acts may have gone from interesting to curious to troubling.

Is he touring without a sax guy now?

Re: Kurt Loder's Music News 2012

"We Take Care of Our Own" is a phrase that kind of gets my wife's goat. My mother-in-law has been ravaged by Alzheimer's disease in recent years. She was living in the Appalachian ridge country of of the West Virginia panhadle, then moved to a facility in western Maryland, and my wife more than once encountered the phrase while navigating through the bureaucracies she was confronted with to get her mother the care she needs.

At the best level, the phrase is warming. It said that those encountering hard times can count on the loving support of family, neighbors, community. At a darker level, it says don't bother turning to government for help here, as we have a tradition of family, neighbors, community doing their part and if you haven't built up your equity with them, you're not doing your job taking care of your own. The double-meaning of the phrase really lies at the fault line in the big government-small government debate. Can government not be a professional and expert expression of the supporting care of family/neighbors/community? Can they afford to? Is the the f/n/c model sustainable as families grow smaller, have children later, and have all adults acting as wage-earners rather than caregivers and homemakers?

And I think Springsteen tackles both sides of it, embracing the double meaning --- celebrating folks for reaching out, but stinging the government for its failures to be an expression of that will. Like "Born in the USA," a phrase that sounds triumphant becomes much more challenging on close listen. Bitterly challenging.

I've been knockin' on the door that holds the throne
I've been lookin' for the map that leads me home
I've been stumblin' on good hearts turned to stone
The road of good intentions has gone dry as bone
We take care of our own
We take care of our own
Wherever this flag's flown
We take care of our own

From Chicago to New Orleans
From the muscle to the bone
From the shotgun shack to the Superdome
We yelled "help" but the cavalry stayed home
There ain't no-one hearing the bugle blown
We take care of our own
We take care of our own
Wherever this flag's flown
We take care of our own

Where's the eyes, the eyes with the will to see?
Where's the hearts that run over with mercy?
Where's the love that has not forsaken me?
Where's the work that set my hands, my soul free?
Where's the spirit that'll reign, reign over me?
Where's the promise, from sea to shining sea?
Where's the promise, from sea to shining sea?
Wherever this flag is flown
Wherever this flag is flown
Wherever this flag is flown

We take care of our own
We take care of our own
Wherever this flag's flown
We take care of our own
We take care of our own
We take care of our own
Wherever this flag's flown
We take care of our own

Really digging this new album by Brendan Benson, who was Jack White's bandmate in the Racontuers.

Keeping up with the dinosaurs of rock, 100-year-old Scottish band the Proclaimers have a new album.

That's right, twins Craig and Charlie Reid recently turned 50.

They can still harmonize. The same can't be said for the BoDeans who are now without Sam Llanas, who abruptly quit the band last year. Astonishingly Kurt Nuemann continued without him and "they" have a new single, which as you might imagine is perfectly pleasant Americana but lacks those Mexican Dylan harmonies that used to distinguish 'em. What do you think?

You would, you Cars-bo, you.

I like the Benson. I REALLY like the Benson. But Blunderbuss is much more sonically adventurous, while still hooky. This feels a little silly to say about someone who's had the rock public's attentions for a little over a decade now, but it feels... dangerous. There's, like, four songs on there that make me wonder his riffs are going to lose control at the next bridge, get a little too lit, and murder somebody.

To get the full experience, commit to the $9.98 monthly fee. That gets you unlimited streaming on the web and whatever you can sync up to your phone for mobile access. If you have a thing like Roku or Sonos that is also included in the $10 fee.

I like Rdio because it's got a great selection but is also very social-powered, so if you make playlists or write a few reviews, you will meet a lot of people on there who tend toward your tastes and you can follow one another. I think it's the best site for people who really want to consume music, but casual listeners can probably get by with less. That sort of worries me over the longer term. Seo is there, and Mole used to be.
