Rolling Stone

The recent discussion on the MLB HoF has led me to ponder a recent publication. RS has, apparently, published a list of the top-100 guitarists of all time. Some surprises there (Muddy Waters at 49, no Joe Satriani-- at all!)

SF Chronicle is running a parallel poll: [url]http://blog.sfgate.com/thebigevent/2012/01/10/todays-special-greatest-guitarists-of-all-time/#2436-3

Interested to hear who you'd all include in say, a top five.

Mark Knoppfler, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton are as good as any place to start. Robert Cray? Carlos Santana? Robert Johnson?

Re: Rolling Stone

It helps if you name your terms. Great dextrous skills doesn't always add up to great effectiveness.

While I was at SPIN, they did a great list of "Top Guitar Heroes" --- where they were unabashed about some of these folks not having the top chops, but you turned them up when they came on. So Joan Jett and Captain Sensible ranked right there among the Malmsteens and Belews.

They explained some of their terms explicitly and and fun-ly: You get extra points for only playing a few chords but playing them distinctively. You lost points for having ridiculous hair. You gained points for being dead. You lost points for playing with David Bowie or David Byrne. You gained points For slinging your guitar differently from everybody else. You lost points for being married to Valerie Bertinelli.

Come to think of it, with both Bowie and Byrne on his resume and an absolutely absurd head of hair, it's a wonder Belew made the list at all.

I'll try and find it.

My favorites: George Harrison when he pulls out the slide, Chuck Berry, Elliott Easton, Brian May, and Mike Campbell. Lyrical guys, I gues is what links them. The Edge, too.

Re: Rolling Stone

Joe Callaghan from Tipperary Town....I bet you all knew a guy like him growing up......brilliant guitarist , just very shy and liked to turn his back to the audience or play behind the drummer.
