Pat Burrell, reportedly.

metirish Jan 30 2012 12:01 PM Re: Retired |
One of those players I always thought would end up as a Met. A good hitter in his day.
|
Edgy MD Jan 30 2012 12:10 PM Re: Retired |
In the early days of the baseball internet, there were arguments over who was the better of the top two batting prospects --- Pat the Bat vs. Nick the Stick --- both with the great OBP skills that were just starting to be so deeply underscored in prospects.

smg58 Jan 30 2012 12:43 PM Re: Retired |
I can't think of any opposing player whose success against the Mets was more frustrating. At least Larry hit like that against other teams too.

Me too.

Frayed Knot Jan 30 2012 02:49 PM Re: Retired |
I remember looking through Burrell's stats against the Mets a while back (prolly in the archives somewhere) and finding that his BA and most other stats were within normally expected range ... except for HRs.

Nymr83 Jan 30 2012 05:44 PM Re: Retired |
I saw on twitter that he retired and the first thing I thought was how big a met-killer I remember him being... 6th in homers against and pretty good company!

Cue much fawning by the writers and a lot of talk about the core three......Christ but I hate the fucking yankees.

Not that it's relevant, but the player I always thought would end up as a Met was Rolen.

Not yet, but Chipper sez this year is his last.

I'd imagine too that the Braves are happy, and not just with the option going away.

Cleanup hitter on the All-Time Switchie Team
|
smg58 Mar 22 2012 10:50 AM Re: Retired |
A first-balloter. It has been a pleasure to root against him. For all the snark we've all given Larry over the years, we'd all have shrines to him if he had a career like that in a Mets uniform.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Mar 22 2012 11:00 AM Re: Retired |
yup. and he was a good sport about a lot of the shit we gave him. It's tough to blame an athlete for being a dumb jock.

Which Davis is that at SS?
|
metirish Mar 22 2012 11:16 AM Re: Retired |
Great player in his prime, great hitter and probably underrated glove man , and durable for most of his years.....
|
Benjamin Grimm Mar 22 2012 11:16 AM Re: Retired |
My guess is that the shortstop named "Davis" is Ozzie Smith.
|
Edgy MD Mar 22 2012 11:28 AM Re: Retired |
Ozzie Davis? Nah, couldn't hit the curve. Plus he was in Joe vs. the Volcano, which would hurt any career.
|
G-Fafif Mar 22 2012 12:51 PM Re: Retired |
It would be appropriate if the Mets hold a farewell ceremony on the Braves' last visit in, September 9, at Shea's home plate marker...and maybe throw some non-lethal object at his coconut.

They should name it something catchy, like the: "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, you smirking mother-fucker" night. Later

Taking a look at Jones' record at Shea, and, well, congrats to him on a good show, but it's not that far off his career norms. It's not what you want to see, certainly, and maybe you'd certainly expect relatively depressed numbers for any guy on the road and in the home park of a generally competitive division rival (which they certainly were during his best years). But even given all that, if I looked at these numbers with no preconceptions, I'd say they fall within the range of normal variance.
It's illuminating. To the extent that it's true that the Braves "had the Mets' number" during the Valentine years (and don't kid yourself --- that's greatly exaggerated also), it was a team effort.
|
Ceetar Mar 23 2012 07:47 AM Re: Retired |
What were his numbers like prior to say 2005 though? I feel like he came back to earth a bit against the Mets
|
Frayed Knot Mar 23 2012 07:51 AM Re: Retired |
As with a lot of 'team killer' reps, Chipper's v the Mets got its start early and continued to be seen as accurate even in later years when it was only occasionally true.
|
Benjamin Grimm Mar 23 2012 07:56 AM Re: Retired |
Wow, look at that 1999: Seven homers in 40 at bats, and a 1.000 slugging percentage. That's enough to really get a reputation started.
|
Edgy MD Mar 23 2012 08:38 AM Re: Retired |
Yup, 1999. And in the playoffs, Valentine's staff absolutely refused to pitch to him, giving him a warped line over the series of .263 / .517 / .368 / .886. They walked him nine times in six games --- and even hit him once, during that bizarre first inning in Game Six immortalized in "Al's Diner."
|
Frayed Knot Mar 25 2012 09:36 AM Re: Retired |
Chipper to start his final season the same way he began what was to be his first one ... on the DL.

Kerry Wood retiring after today's game.

Frayed Knot May 18 2012 10:01 AM Re: Retired |

|
metirish May 18 2012 10:12 AM Re: Retired |
Happy trails.....watched the SO game a few years ago and it was something else....heard it called the greatest pitching performance ever, not sure how that can even be determined but it was amazing to watch.
|
Edgy MD May 18 2012 10:18 AM Re: Retired |
Probably wasn't the greatest pitching performance ever, but it was up there. Harvey Haddix certainly has a claim on that title as well. I'd say the greatest was a tie between Leon Cadore and Joe Oeschger.
|
Gwreck May 18 2012 12:41 PM Re: Retired |
Kerry Wood has the highest-ever game score for a 9 inning game (105). Haddix had a 107 in 13 innings.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr May 18 2012 02:34 PM Re: Retired |
Wood strikes out last batter swinging, then leaves to a two-minute standing ovation/curtain-call thing. Kinda awesome.
|
Edgy MD May 18 2012 02:36 PM Re: Retired |
Kerry Wood comes in and strikes out the last hitter he faces, and then walks off to a standing ovation --greeted by his son. Daytime game at Wrigley, hosting the White Sox.
|
Frayed Knot May 18 2012 02:39 PM Re: Retired |
Cubs still batting in the 8th down by one - although Wood can't get the win because he didn't finish the inning.
