Mets Spring Training Thread

12.5 days.

From Sherman:

Also heard #Mets planning prospects (think Nimmo, Wheeler, etc) vs. their veterans exhibition on March 3 or 4 in St. Lucie

That sounds pretty cool.

Murphy?

Between the height, the lankiness, the presence of a bullpen mound, and the presence of the legend that is Al Jackson, I'm going to go with a pitcher.

The big mofo? If that's Davis, you've got a scoop, because that's not a firstbaseman's glove.

If that's not a pitcher, than it's L.U.C.A.S. But both would seemingly have more chest than that.

Jackson's 5'9"-5'10", and this guy's at least 6-8" taller. Could be Wheeler or Harvey. I'm thinking it's my boy Rustich (6'6"). Or has Jon Rauch been moisturizing/getting Botox injects?

Part of it may be an illusion of the mound height, but if that's my wookie, where are his neck tatts?

He looks too young to be Rauch, and I've just seen those slouching shoulders somewhere.

Re: Mets Spring Training Thread

Gotta be Harvey

and he's there

The Mets announced yesterday that they have invited top pitching prospect Matt Harvey to major-league camp in Port St. Lucie, Fla. It's very likely more of a reward than it is a chance to win a major-league roster spot.
Harvey, the Mets' first-round pick (seventh overall) in 2010, enjoyed a successful first pro season, with 156 strikeouts in 135 2/3 innings. He began the season with Class A St. Lucie before graduating to Double-A Binghamton.
He turns 23 in March, so he isn't too young to pitch at the highest level. Yet the Mets have brought along their young players more deliberately since Sandy Alderson took over as general manager.
The Mets also announced that outfielder Matt den Dekker, their fifth-round selection of the 2010 draft, would receive an invitation to major-league spring training. Dekker totaled 17 homers last year with St. Lucie and Binghamton.

It was confirmed immediately by @mets but that first tweet about fundraising threw people for a loop.

but basically he's just trolling the idiocy, which is awesome.

"The genesis of this came earlier in the day when it was suggested that I was driving to Florida because the Mets couldn't afford a plane ticket," said Alderson, who created the account @MetsGM. "There were people on the Internet who actually believed that. So I just thought we'd point out the absurdity of all this by poking fun at the whole thing."

Re: Mets Spring Training Thread

Scott Kasmir worked out today for a number of teams. Here's a report from someone I correspond with* down there:
So here's the quick run down of today's event. First and foremost Scott is a great guy and very down to earth, even with some serious $$$ in his pocket. He is much more muscular than I thought and seemed to be in decent shape for a shot at a comeback. He threw around 60 pitches for 8-10 scouts (I took note of the Blue Jays, Pirates, Astros and Angels in attendance). His fastball ended up sitting around 88 and he touched 91 a few times (Buster Olney will report 86-88 because Scott's agent texted him that info, and I hope he corrects it, because it's not true). His slider showed some life at 76-78 and his curveball wasn't overly sharp. When he finished his pitches and kept the ball down, he threw a lot more efficiently. Definitely a lot better than his 82-83 mph bullpen in the Dominican last month. Astros and Pirates showed the most interest, and he will be throwing a followup pen on Monday for a few additional teams. All in all a solid outing for him in my opinion...

That's like giving Mark Brunell snaps and pretending Sanchez might not play.

Luckily, that's not what Collins was saying at all. He was just emphasizing that Thole needs to improve to be considered a major league catcher.

The way the team is contructed right now, I hope no one is guaranteed a starting job.

We name starters the old fashioned way...they earn it.

Re: Mets Spring Training Thread

Too many guys seem to be virtually guaranteed a starting job. With a deeper team, Dillon Gee, for example, would have a lot more on the line going into spring training than he does now. So would Andres Torres, Mike Pelfrey, and perhaps Ruben Tejada. Not to mention Jason Bay, who's in a whole other category.

How many Mets -- or for that matter players in general -- do you suppose are working on a new grip or an alteration to their swing convinced it's just what they needed only to find themselves a year from now blaming their lost season on a "bad habit I got into during Spring Training"?

Probably the same many that are currently at Duffy's eating a fatty dinner so they can show up next season in the best shape of their lives.

Wright skips intra-squad game with "stiff rib cage" (isn't it supposed to be stiff?)

Noble @ mlb.com -- ... Wright provided half-answers and spoke vaguely, and with each word he spoke Saturday morning, the WhatEverItIs that caused him to be scratched from one of the intrasquad game lineups became more curious.
Official word from the Mets is that Wright has stiffness of the left rib cage. Mets manager Terry Collins pointed to his own side and indicated that was the troubled area for his third baseman. Wright wasn't even that precise. He called in stiffness, period, end of diagnosis.

And, of course, the usual caveat of: "If these were real games I'd be playing", was thrown in for good measure -- a phrase which might trail only "I'm in the best shape of my life" and "flu-like symptoms" in the pantheon of vague fitness claims.

Maybe if the media didn't demand specific and elaborate details to every little ache and pain.. If you send a gaggle of reporters to Wright and then Collins for this they're gonna have to say something or they'd criticize them for not talking, and if they let Wright play in a meaningless 3/3 game anyway they'll all pretend they have medical degrees and kill the Mets for letting him play with it.

I noticed espn.com lists the all-important Grapefruit League standings. I loved that when I was a kid, seeing all these N.L. and A.L. teams jumbled together by meaningless records. It was peculiar to March and maybe early April, though by then, the records felt even more meaningless.

If you don't count up things like wins and losses and hits and home runs it might not be baseball!

Re: Mets Spring Training Thread

I envisioned such meaning in those standings that I formed in my head a spring training championship match --- the top record in the Grapefruit League meeting their Cactus League counterpart (an easier title to bag, to be certain) at the end of camp in some sunbelt AAA stadium looking to put on a showcase for their big league aspirations: New Orleans, Louisville, San Antone, Phoenix. Maybe even Miami!

We'd get great quotes like, "Coach wants to hold me to 80 pitches, saying to save it for the season. I say, 'Coach, I want to win.' A championship's a championship. You bet we take it seriously. Let's play some baseball."

I don't love Atlanta. They didn't do much to improve after collapsing, and are starting a rookie at shortstop. Hudson will miss the beginning of the season, Hanson has a concussion and all that shoulder stuff in his past, and the kid relievers threw a ton of innings last year.

C.J. is a fascinating dude because back around the turn of the century, he started a website --- cjbaseball.com --- that housed what was more or less the first blog by an active player. He chronicled his life and shared that the Mets wanted to bring him back in 2002, and offered him the most money, but the Spirit was sending him in another direction.

C.J. is still at it, and does a cool job chronicling his finding himself down in the DR this winter.
