I Can't Make 1979 Make No Sense
Edgy MD Feb 09 2012 06:58 AM |
I've read two or three books this past year scanning a period that includes 1979, and when I get to that season, I've decided that I can't make a lick of sense out of it.

Meanwhile, Oil Can Boyd surprises nobody in confessing that he routinely pitched while wired, but does somehow manage to maintain the delusion that he was persecuted.

Wasn't 1979 the year that the Mets won their last six games in a row in a desperate attempt to avoid 100 losses?

Jerry Koosman! Winning 20 for Minnesota after going 11-35 his previous two years with the Mets (8-20 and 3-15). Damn you, 1979!

1979 was all about Lee Mazzilli's All-Star Game home run off Ron Guidry.
|
Edgy MD Feb 09 2012 08:19 AM Re: I Can't Make 1979 Make No Sense |
That, indeed, made sense. Although the game-tying homer was off of Jim Kern. The go-ahead bases-loaded walk was off of Guidry.

It is also weird in the sense that all 4 1978 postseason teams would return in 1980 in one form or another (DAMN IT, I AM CALLING A PLAY-IN GAME #163 OR THE OLD NL SERIES PART OF POSTSEASON PLAY).

Good point. What a historical hiccup.

Edgy MD Feb 09 2012 08:52 AM Re: I Can't Make 1979 Make No Sense |
The Angels would go from division champs in 1979 to 31 games out in 1980. I just can't make it make no sense!

I met D-Dad in 1979, and that's the year he became a Mets fan.

Now that I signed up to write Mazz's bio for SABR I ought to get that detail right.

Make sure you include the road trip to Juarez with the Jackson Mets.

World Champs used 5 starters in the World Series, and the guys who started games 1 and 2 did not make second starts. I would guess the last team to use 5 different starters in one WS?

For reasons known only to the BBWAA, the NLCS award was created a few years before the NLCS one was.

I believe the MFY of 1976-1978 counted Munson, White and Guidry as the only homegrown cogs to those pennant winning teams.

Randolph too, to my thinking.

I hear ya. Randolph came to the Yankees via the Pirates.

That's another thing. Kelvin Chapman is the opening day (and regular) secondbaseman for the Mets. He struggles and gets sent down, only to return five years later! What gives, 1979?!

The last pennant for The Earl of Baltimore. They would still have good showings for the rest of Earl's run before winning it all in 1983, the first year of Weaver's first retirement. Also represents the last WS starts for Jim Palmer, who pitches out of the pen in the 1983 WS. Also the season pretty is the beginning of the end for his career as well.

Pirates and Reds also take the entire decade of the 1980s off in terms of postseason appearances.

Disco's death prematurely announced in 1979. Donna Summer had a chart year for the ages:

I was six and went to a Mets game or two that summer with my parents. My grandparents were living in Flushing at the time.

Couple of tragic baseball happenings of course with the death of Thurman Munson, and tragic in lesser terms, but still in terms of how his life would turn out in the immediate aftermath of, last full season for J.R. Richard.

Speaking of Knucksie, at 21-20, the last guy to win and lose 20 in the same year! You know, it is kind of a shame that prior to Mike Maroth, the last 20 game loser was pretty much an obscure Brian Kingman. Had it been HOFer Phil Niekro, or even a guy like Jerry Koosman who had a solid big league career (I've seen people place his overall career over Glavine's) maybe the stigma of a 20 game loser would not have been so great. Speaking of the A's, and going back to your point. 1979 starts Vida Blue's career tailspin as well. Also, Dock Ellis' big league career ends in 1979 (but not before donning Metly pinstripes), to pick another star that burned bright in the early 1970s but crashed and burned by decade's end.

Frayed Knot Feb 09 2012 02:02 PM Re: I Can't Make 1979 Make No Sense |
Note that most of those great pitchers coming up on the finish line were NL guys most or all of their career. Couple them with the half-generation older and again mostly NL ones who had already petered out (Koufax, Marichal, Gibson, etc.) and I think you can tab 1979 as the rough end of the nearly two-decade long era of the NL as the stronger league.

Edgy MD Feb 09 2012 02:07 PM Re: I Can't Make 1979 Make No Sense |
Yup. A few other very-good-for-a-short-time AL-types in there include Lolich, McLain, and Blue.

SteveJRogers Feb 09 2012 06:15 PM Re: I Can't Make 1979 Make No Sense |
Just to further illustrate the point about the downfall of pitching post 1970s. 13 of the decade's CY award winners were future HOFers.

And why didn't guys like Dwight Gooden, Steve Howe, Joaquin Andujar, Oil Can Boyd, and Lary Sorenson fashion Hall of Fame careers? Say it with me.

The former. He met me and then decided to adopt my team (which was relatively easy for him, not having grown up with one of his own).
