Going to the Game 2012

Presale for Citi Credit Card holders starts in 3 minutes.

[url]http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/nym/ticketing/presale.jsp?presale=citi&partnerId=RI133U661G-L1093

I don't know if it enforces the purchase must be on a Citi Card or if it's just the entry. I'll gladly share the first 6 digits of my card if you want to try.

Going for Opening Day and I guess a Subway Series dealio. Didn't get any real feedback on which bobbleheads friends would like to go to, so holding off on anything else. Probably not likely to be flex-priced out of my range any time soon anyway.

If anyone is interested in purchasing tickets for the Gary, Keith and Ron Foundation's season tickets for a game this season, here is a list of the available games (many of which include perks). They're great seats and it's a great cause, so think about it!

GKR Season Tickets

In addition, cooby herself is going to grace us with her presence at Banner Day (yea!). If anyone is interested in sitting with us in Promenade Box seats ($36 per ticket), let me know.

Probably not. I'd just get the Promenade Infield of that. Unless you're itching to go to the Ceasar's Club (which Gold gets you)

Gold is the 'front' section (like Upper Reserved versus Upper Box) behind home plate. Promenade Infield can extend out to the bases, but is usually just fine. Promenade Box is all the non-behind home plate Promenade front sections. They're allfairly nice but if you get too far out in the outifled with them you'll have trouble with seeing the left fielder.

Re: Going to the Game 2012

What Cee said. Also, ideally, you'll want something in Row 2 or above-- Row 1 is usually directly behind the glass partition guiderail for the stairs to each section, and-- unless you're planning on growing a foot or two before coming this way-- makes seeing the game a chore.

yeah, glass partition can be a pain if that bothers you. more an issue in the Box/Gold seats but depending on your seat and angle I guess there are spots in infield reserved where it bothers you too. or just pick a middle of the row seat. or row two. lower number seats are closer to home plate. I don't know how many seats in each row.

more importantly, the 'craft beer dugout' is located in the promenade food court which is behind home plate (it's physically above the rotunda) it's a small stand off to the first base side of the giant baseball on the ground. YOu might not be able to make out the baseball though, because there's another beer stand on top of it. This one the Big Apple Brews which has the anheuser busch/inbev/craft brewery alliance stuff. decent selection there too.

Thanks, boys. Good info. Staring at some prom infield 514, row 4's that I might pull the trigger on. The box equiv is 404, row 4 and those look alright, too. Not planning on being a #bigballer beyond that price range, I don't think. Will share if things fall into place & I end up booking something.

I'd do 514 over 404. (which is outfield. but not a bad spot) 404 probably gets you promenade club access if that's your thing. It's not really much in there though. However, you're closer to the Alyssa Milano Touch shop.

Re: Going to the Game 2012

I'm joining metfairy's crew tomorrow to witness my first Banner Day since June 7, 1987 when the Mets split a doubleheader with the Pirates.

http://www.ultimatemets.com/gamedetail.php?gameno=4075
http://ultimatemets.com/gamedetail.php? ... 76&tabno=A

Thoughts on those games:
* I don't think I was yet familiar with the skinny kid leading off the Pirates.
* Roger McDowell won the first game with Don Robinson taking the loss. McDowell got the loss in the second game but Robinson picked up a save.
* I have no memories of either of the starting pitchers for the Mets, perhaps appropriately for Tom Edens who was making the last of two appearances with the Mets. I have no excuse for not remembering John Mitchell since he made 19 starts in that season which I followed more closely than any other before or since.
* There was a total of 19 innings of baseball that day. Intense.
* For some reason the only banner I remember from the parade said "The Key-ith to Our Team" featuring a life-sized cutout of Hernandez.

Re: Going to the Game 2012

This is from an e-mail survey I just got from the Mets:

The Mets are considering adding a designated "quiet" seating section with lower volume PA Announcements and no music or cheerleading. The seating section would be located in the Left Field Landing.

How likely would you be to purchase tickets in that section?

Please assume all game days and start times would work with your personal schedule. Note: This is hypothetical concept that the Mets have not committed to; you are evaluating the concept for research purposes only.

The Mets are considering designating one weekday game each week for a "throwback" ballpark experience with live organ instead of recorded music and fewer PA Announcements.

How likely would you be to attend games on the Throwback day?

Please assume all game days and start times would work with your personal schedule. Note: This is hypothetical concept that the Mets have not committed to; you are evaluating the concept for research purposes only.

cool on the organ music, although I feel like they ask that a lot.

I'm curious though, can they not just add more organ music anyway? Do the amount of PA announcements and between inning ads/games/giveaways just take up too much of the time?

Re: Going to the Game 2012

a quiet section would be an excellent thing for minimm, as he is no big fan of loud noises. if such a thing were offered, i would buy tickets to a game to sit there. i do not know that it would make me more likely to attend a game, but if i were to attend a game, i would attend it in that section.

i would also attempt to synchronize it with a throwback day.

I like the idea of more quiet. I prefer the noise to come from the fans, not from the speakers. I often forget how relatively peaceful Shea used to be when I first attended games there in the early 1970's. (The Mets Yearbook series on SNY serves as a reminder.)

I wonder how much quieter they can really make it. (LFL can't always see the scoreboard either though)

I guess they can mostly mute the mics on that level, but it's not like the surrounding areas are far away.

I'll be at Friday's game as well. I'm not staying for the concert. I have no idea what REO Speedwagon even sounds like.

OK, so am I the only one here confused as to how you can designate one section for "lower PA volume"?
The stuff they pump through the speakers of that stadium can be heard in Astoria. How do you block it out of one area?

The "throwback" idea is great.
The only problem they may run into is that so many people (in virtually all sports and all stadiums) have been conditioned to expect and accept ear-splitting volume and every interlude of more that six seconds to be filled with some sort of "entertainment" that you run the risk of having at least a portion of the audience interpret those interludes as translating into a game that's 'flat' or 'dull'.

Re: Going to the Game 2012

The "quiet" section is an interesting idea but when their survey asked if you would consider purchasing seats there, I said absolutely not. Primary reason: I don't think the left field landing seats are very good.

The "throwback" day is interesting re: limited cheering and PA announcements. Why ruin it with the horrible organ music?

You think so? I know my wife notices some of that stuff but I'm not sure she'd miss it if it was replaced with organ music. Have we been conditioned to expect that or have stadiums/arenas been conditioned to think that we expect/want that and we don't actually care? (Actually, I've never thought it was at ear-splitting volumes, and I'm usually sensitive to that)

Yes.
Part of the problem in the way games are presented (again, at large, not specifically to the Mets) is that organizations are too afraid to stray from 'established' formulas for fear of maybe falling on their faces.
I always found it amazing that hockey arenas, for instance, refuse to allow silence for the 13 seconds it takes them to line up for a face-off.

I believe there is a portion of the public who have never experienced a game without the noise and one would suddenly feel the game was lacking something if it weren't there.

I remember Russo one time talking about a 1950s era World Series Game that was being shown back when 'Classic Sports' channels were brand new.
His comment to Francesa was that, while he enjoyed the action, it "just didn't feel like a big game" to him. Mikey, there was no buzz, no energy'
What he was saying in effect, even if he didn't realize it, was that the re-broadcast lacked all the bells and whistles --Graphics, sound effects, replay, slo-mo, loud announcers trying to "define the moment"-- he had come to expect from modern network TV.
And while you could certainly say that 'well, that's just Russo' I don't know that anyone represents the modern sports fan better.

well yeah, that's me. At least, I don't remember a time before all the noise and stuff. But would I actually..miss it?

I probably would..but not in a bad way. Take the hockey example for instance, the 13 seconds of noise until the faceoff. LIke it or not, I've been conditioned to know that the silence means the game started again. Same with the between innings stuff. When it stops, it means I should stop looking at the out of town scoreboard, the vendor pouring beer, or the hot girl in the next section and pay attention to the game again. (granted the "Now batting: " should do that at a baseball game) I wonder if there are other things so ingrained at this point that I'd miss, even if I'd be glad they were gone?

Re: Going to the Game 2012

Re: Going to the Game 2012

also, on the Russo thing, the 1950s sports fan was a much different beast. They watched games differently, just culturally. Even just wearing mets stuff to games for instance. It seems to me that fans in those days were a little more formal in their watching of sports. Whereas nowadays its a more casual atmosphere.

hmm. I wonder if this is somewhat related to dress codes in general. I know some people seem upset when people wear less formal attire to Broadway plays. Is it because sports are clearly the #1 entertainment destination, and back in the day maybe Broadway/Opera/etc was more of the prototype for dress/behavior at an entertainment venue?

Re: Going to the Game 2012

I think there should be nights when a live band performs during the games. Rope off a few seats and have them play right in the stands. They can do the walk-up and rally music and perform full original songs between innings.

There's some history behind this too, the Red Sox Royal Rooters used to sing show tunes all games and then there's the Dodger's Sym-phony Band (hey, Brooklyn Fred might like that).

Well now you're into a whole separate topic.
Yes, we as a nation dressed a lot more formally in the 1950s - hell, my grandfather worked in his garden in better clothes than I've occasionally worn to the office. The reason team-related sports gear wasn't worn to parks wasn't just because it was considered too casual but because it never really occurred to teams to sell it, and those that did consider the concept tended to reject it. They treated it as an elitist thing; the idea of some kid walking around on the streets in a Yankee cap was abhorrent to the team because they thought it reduced the 'specialness' for the handful who actually earned the right to wear one.

But what Russo was talking about was not the game itself but how it was presented. That it had no screaming announcers, no piped-in music, no splashy graphics, and no miked-up crowd noise signaled to him that this somehow wasn't an important game even though he obviously knew it was.

well quality of broadcast plays in too I imagine. It's not like the Polo Grounds had a high quality crowd mics under every row of seats. Or the extra cameras with a resolution good enough to zoom in on the nervous guy in the upper deck chewing on his hat to demonstrate the tension.

I know it's a pretty small sample, but my impressions of the 2006 playoffs were that a lot of this stuff WAS toned down. I remember thinking it during the second game of the NLDS how there wasn't nearly as much silly mid-inning stuff. Obviously they still did all the PA "Let's Go Mets!" stuff but it was definitely a different atmosphere/experience than the regular season.

I took the survey and ripped them for the advertising assault and urged them to be creative for once.

Do you remember the last time they wanted to know how we felt about a race between puppets with giant heads. Why now is it a choice between blaring top-40 or "organ music"? Why not a jazz band? Why not a musician of the day?

And just to be clear, I'm getting conflicting reports on whether this will be Daughtry the dude performiing or Daughtry the band. They're different entities, right?

Well apparently my wife likes them which is why we're going. And TholeMoley on Twitter. And that's all I know, but I don't pay a lot of attention to people's musical tastes. I wasn't even aware they/he/it was on American Idol at one point.

It's a band. (The singer's name also, but a band.) They largely suck, in the way that Nickelback sucks.

Daughtry is a dude. Daughtry is a band with that dude out front. The latter-- and, therefore, the former-- will be performing on Friday night.

It's like Dio, except alive, and not, y'know, nearly as good or funny. And it sucks in almost exactly the way Nickelback sucks (mesh tees and wallet chains and grunge's-slow-grandchildren-riffs and terrible lyrical turns of phrase inclusive). Here's a Daughtry song.

no audio at work (still up in the air on if I want 'spoilers' or not), I'm not sure who Dio is either.

I personally don't have a problem with Nickleback though. I enjoy the terrible lyrical turns of phrases, I find them amusing and therefore entertaining.

Good, then-- you and the wife will get a lot more out of Friday night than 'Wolf or I would.

Am considering dragging the fam to Saturday (especially since it looks like it could be the Matt Harvey Show).

You know the conflict you feel when one of your favorite shows, like Mad Men or Breaking Bad, is on at the same time as the Mets? Well, that will happen again on August 12 as ESPN has moved the home game against the Braves to 8:05. At least the Mets have a day off the next day.

My conflict is more that I bought the tickets-- the only ones I've actually purchased this year-- with the intent to go as a family outing. Now, I'm either selling at a loss or ditching my wife and child to go with friends/other family.

LWFS--I feel badly for you. This is a great example of the Crypt Keeper not giving a damn about the fans. He'd say, or at least his press people would say for him, that he's giving more fans a better game to watch by allowing ESPN to make this late selection. If you were allowed to return or exchange the tickets, I wouldn't argue but you're not, you looked forward to it, and you got screwed. And I'm sorry.

The Mets will honor her presence by wearing the ugly black drop shadow pajama top shirts featuring the Gary Carter memorial patch on the chest. yeah they gave me every reason to look for food tonight. sat directly behind the plate in the first few rows of the upper deck (or whatever they call the highest section now), a spot that feels a mile lower than sitting front row of the upper deck behind the plate at Shea, where i enjoyed the Todd Pratt game from.

Finally going to trade in the tickets from the Tom Seaver bobblehead rainout. (the whole concept of not being able to trade in tickets I bought online anywhere but in person.. odd..) for the Mike Piazza bobblehead game Saturday.

This could be my last trip to Citi. Only one more homestand I'll be in the country for after that.

I went to the second game of the season. At the time, I wouldn't have guessed that it would be the only one I'd attend, but it sure looks that way now. I haven't even been watching on TV; the last time I saw even a single pitch was in July, before I went away.

they're all 20 lots. but yeah, third base/left field side. Stand on Shea's infield and walk directly at Citi Field. right there. under the little overhang. alternatively the ticket office is tucked around the corner right there too, next to the rotunda and they could probably help you.

Re: Going to the Game 2012

I am going to all three games in Milwaukee this weekend. On Saturday, I'll be tailgating with my wife's sister, my wife's cousin and his son and then a childhood friend of my wife's. This friend is bringing her husband (boyfirend?), who is another Wisconsin Mets fan. I've never met him, but I'm looking forward to it just because I know so few Mets fans in person. If we hit it off, I'll try to get him in the Pool.
