Re: comicbook prequel series to WATCHMEN...

...The publisher of DC Comics said Wednesday that it will launch seven interlocking and inter-connected miniseries - each focusing on a specific character - as it revisits the world first and last seen in the 1986-1987 12-issue series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, which has remained a staple of critics and consumers and a near-constant best-selling graphic novel.

The seven titles will carry the "Before Watchmen" banner, DC said.

...the writers and artists bringing the miniseries about Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, Comedian and the Minutemen include writers Len Wein, Darwyn Cooke; Brian Azzarello and J. Michael Straczynski. Artists include Amanda Conner, Andy and Joe Kubert, Adam Hughes, Jae Lee, J.G. Jones, Lee Bermejo and Cooke.

Wein, who is writing "Ozymandias," is also penning a two-page backup feature in each of the series dubbed "The Curse of the Crimson Corsair," which is illustrated by John Higgins, who did the colors on the original "Watchmen" series..."

Len Wein! That's a name that goes way back.

Some nice talent lined up, but... man, this does not smell good.

Well, sort of like with Annikin Skywalker, when you know the ultimate fate of Ozymandias, can you really take much thrill in his heroic past?

I think I might enjoy adventures of the Minute Men more.

Whenever I used to see "Mike Watt" in print, I used to wonder if he were secretly committing bank robberies on the side as Electro.

Len Wein is a legendary figure, writing and editing iconic characters and story arcs for both Marvel and DC, primarily in the 1960s-80s.

I first became aware of him as a kid writer for DC, where he created SWAMP-THING with Berni Wrightson, and did a great job on PHANTOM STRANGER. He also had a hand in DC's horror anthology titles HOUSE OF SECRETS. For Marvel, in a similar vein, he contributed to TOWER OF SHADOWS and CHAMBER OF DARKNESS, so, despite his work on superhero titles like TEEN TITANS, JLA, FLASH and SUPERMAN, it was horror i most associated with him. This was true too of his buddy and sometimes collaborator, Marv Wolfman (aptly named), best known for his run on TOMB OF DRACULA (where he created "Blade"). I used to get the 2 of them mixed up.

When Wein came over to Marvel full time (later becoming their editor in chief), his most notable contribution was the co-creation with artist Dave Cockrum of the "New" X-Men, including Wolverine (whom he had previously introduced in THE HULK), plotting the early issues before turning scripting duties over to Chris Claremont. He returned to DC in the 1980s, where he did notable work on Batman and other superhero titles, and edited THE WATCHMEN.

I lost track of him after that; apparently, he went to Disney in the 90s and did a lot of animation scripting over the last decade.

While i'm happy to see him still active in his 60s, i think this is kind of a desperate project and i don't have high hopes for it.

I've met Len once or twice; I also worked a bit with his wife (just by e-mail). I still think his work on Swamp Thing was terrific.

As for this, what's next, Watchmen Babies?
