Lin-Sanity! (Split from Knicks 2012)

Lin Fragment

Jeremy Lin going Lil' Steve Nash? Interior defense and tough boarding from Jared Jeffries? The Knicks outrebounding another NBA team to win at home?

We are through the looking glass.

Re: Knicks 2012, Short season of non-suckitude?

If, at the start of the season, someone would have told me that my team would lose to the Knicks because of a Chinese-American point guard who went to Harvard, my first reaction would have been to have them committed.
Then, I would have remembered that I am a Nets fan ...

After the game, Steve Somers said (I closely paraphrase) "The Knicks haven't had an under- 30 year old point guard who could drive the lane like Lin since (I'm not kidding. He said this) Walt Frazier".

This was either:
*an error of enthusiasm
*the greatest example of hyperbole I have ever heard (yeah, I know)
*Steve has missed a couple of steps in his 12 step program.

Re: Knicks 2012, Short season of non-suckitude?

Have you seen the games? What do YOU think?

He's got a lot of season to go before he'll silence the innumerable doubts that most Knick fans could have about his game (I mean, he's probably not a 20-25 ppg/8-9 assist guy for them). But with the repertoire of hesitation moves he's displayed, the ability to find open shooters on drives, and his quick hands and feet, he's looked GOOD; I've yelped a couple of times on three-point plays (including a mid-air switch-hands reverse and another on which he was nearly decapitated by Al Jefferson as he made the layup), and the ability to penetrate is real.

It may be a mirage, but he looks at the very least like an interesting change-of-pace complement to a healthy Baron Davis, and the offense's flow hasn't looked any better this season than it has in the last two games.

Re: Knicks 2012, Short season of non-suckitude?

I find it funny that D'antoni wouldn't play him because he was worried about his defense, when last year, in GS, he was primarily known for his defense (look at his per 36)

I think he'll continue to grow and succeed. He's got a lot of learning and growing to do still, but if he can do that with Amare, Chandler, and Melo, it'll make his learning a lot easier.

Last night really impressed me that he was able to have the game he did with Amare and Melo out, and Chandler playing so few minutes.

Dunno. A guy like John Wall-- or a gal like a young Jennifer Grey-- moves like the wind. Seems to me that Lin moves in fits and starts and lunges. The appeal is that-- holy crap! He's still dribbling at the end of it all! And look, he made a productive pass/layup/ridiculous and-one layup besides! He's a good dribbler with good strength and deceptive quickness-- D'Antoni's system is BUILT to make a guy like him look good. But he's not doing it because he's got Beltran-like grace or anything.

Plus, it's that the ball movement his penetrate-and-dish stimulates seems to be catching; the offense isn't working exclusively because of him directly, but the passing flow/moving without the ball that's keying the scoring in these last few games is definitely given a nudge by his style/abilities.

Plus plus, they're actually playing solid interior D, and getting some boards from people not named "Tyson Chandler."

Listen to Wednesday's NBA Today podcast with Mike Yam and former NBAer Tim Legler... Legs says that Lin isn't fast at all, but he takes angles coming off screens like a ten year veteran would! I find it hard to believe he'll stay this good (20 pts with a good shooting percentage) but its also hard to believe that the Knicks haven't, at the very least, found a top 5 backup PG here, and that's pretty nice itself for a team with allegedly no depth.
The pessimist Mets fans in me is reminding me that they beat the Nets, Jazz, and Wizards though. And, they'll be back to Anthony and Stoudemire not meshing soon enough.

Re: Knicks 2012, Short season of non-suckitude?

the dude is legit. People are still trying to temper it down to him being a backup PG, but honestly, I seeing what I've seen, why not a starting pg?

he's not the most graceful, and while he may not be the quickest in the league, he's quicker than a lot (how else is he getting past defenders?). He has the court vision, work ethic, and drive.

he may not be a Chris Paul or a Steve Nash, but if he's not with the knicks next year, he'll be a starting PG next year, no doubt.

Forget about the band wagon, I've been riding the horse before there was a bandwagon.

Re: Lin-Sanity! (Split from Knicks 2012)

This was a very sloppy and unnecessary splitting of a thread. Discusiion of Lin still exists in the Knicks thread and at least some non-Lin discussion is here, not to mention that discussion of Lin is on-topic in a thread about the Knicks. While I understand the desire to split conversations that are off-topic (say, Jose Reyes' english-speaking abilities in a thread about the 2011 free agent crop) or more permanent topics that crop up in an IGT, splitting discussion of a Knicks player (including much discussion of his on the court play) from the Knicks thread is counter-productive, imo.

Feel free to split this off into the bitch to the admins forum! Haha

non-chinese asians look up to him. he represents asian americans in general because that's how other folks look at us on a court or in any other setting. chinese, japanese, korean, etc... we all look the same...

as for historical racial relations...
older chinese don't like japanese for attrocities in 40's during japanese occupation.
koreans were always stuck in the middle of the two countries so, being a sovereign nation within the last century makes nationalism is high among the older folks.

with younger folks, the stuff don't matter too much.

Fidrych had a similar fun factor involved, but Fernando-Mania might be an even better comparison to Lin-sanity:
- an unheralded guy with non-standard background
- starts to dazzle immediately upon first start with record-setting rookie numbers
- team undefeated while he's out there
- ethnic component to the story

Re: Lin-Sanity! (Split from Knicks 2012)

Looking up for a refresher course in Fernando's start, I hadn't realized that he came up at the tail-end of 1980 and had pitched 17 scoreless relief innings over ten appearances.

But then in '81, his first 8 games:
- all starts
- all complete games
- all wins
- 4 earned runs allowed (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 2)
- 0.50 ERA over 72 IP; 43 Hits; 68 K; 17 BB

He wound up that (strike-shortened) year with 25 games - all starts; 11 complete games, 192 IP, 140 Hits, 180 K, 61 BB, 13-7 record, 1.045 WHiP, 2.48 ERA
Rookie of the Year ... Cy Young, All-Star ... 5th in MVP ... and, oh yeah, the Silver Slugger Award [.250/.262/.281 -- 16 for 64 incl 1 2B, 6 SH and 7 RBI]

Mets were his 7th start - a CG 1-0 Shut-out vs Mike Scott & Jeff Reardon
Mets out-hit the Dodgers 7 to 5 but LA's 1st inning RBI single holds up
Mets load the bases in the 1st (1-out) & 2nd (2-out), then get two-on in the 3rd but can't score in any of them. Then they hardly get a base-runner for the rest of the game.

Re: Lin-Sanity! (Split from Knicks 2012)

Reading The Last Icon, Steve Travers seems to end his reporting on every one of Tom Seaver's seasons explaining why Tom should have won the Cy Young Award. And the case is strong in 1981 (Seaver had my vote), but he goes over the top in his indictment of Fernandomania and tells me that Fernando won the MVP as well, and I knew that wasn't true. (Schmidt smashed the field, and the vote was almost unanimous.)

As we go further into the eighties, which I remember well, he gets enough wrong (particularly 1983) that I completely lose faith in his accounting of the seventies, which I don't remember as well.

Yeah, NL CY voters definitely let Fernando-Mania get into their heads. I even remember a story at the time arguing that, hype aside, "Freddie" was closer to being the 3rd best pitcher* on his own team than the best in the league.

Which is why I'm shocked that there are Tebow comparisons in the media...

Okay, not SHOCKED since this is the mass media of the instant gratification, forget everything that happened prior to a year ago age, but even so, last time I checked a National Championship and Heisman winning QB from a football program that has been on the national scene for decades, to say nothing about him being a very polarizing figure even back in his college days, is far from being a journeyman last man on the bench from an Ivy League school that literally was to be cut just before his hot streak began.

Yeah, if you say Tim Tebow came from nowhere, it'd probably be in the sense of...well...I can't even say he came from nowhere in Florida as he was apparently a top High School QB prospect in the state as well. Can't even use the Tom Brady (wasn't the starter in Michigan) analogy with Tebow!

They are only comparable in the sense that Tebow was the last major "sports transcending sensation" that the mass media had to overhype to death for some Andy Warhol time.

Know what would be impressive --- a creature somehow formed from the fused DNA of Lin and Tebow. Transcending sports like a comet for a few glorious weeks and generating endless punny headlines for mass consumption. Back page and front.

Linbow. That would be a force to reckon with.

Asian stereotypes appearing in coverage of Knicks' Jeremy Lin
By Michael McCarthy, USA TODAY

The feel-good story of the year is taking a bit of nasty turn with Asian stereotyping beginning to appear in media coverage of New York Knicks star guard Jeremy Lin, the NBA's first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent.

CNBC's Darren Rovell got the ball rolling Wednesday night by questioning why MSG Network showed Lin's face above a fortune cookie during coverage of the Knicks' victory against the Sacramento Kings, with the words, "The Knicks good fortune."

Tweeted Rovell: "MSG walking a fine line with this Lin fortune cookie graphic tonight."

MSG put out a statement Thursday saying it had nothing to do with the image: "What appeared briefly last night was not an MSG graphic, it was one of many fan signs in the arena."

The network declined to comment on why it telecast the image.

Rovell corrected himself on Twitter on Thursday.

The New York Post also took criticism for using the headline, "Amasian," after Lin drilled a game-clinching three-pointer for the win against the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday.

During CBS' The Late Show with David Letterman on Wednesday, Jon Stewart of Comedy Central mocked the headline, according to SportsBusiness Daily.

Stewart told Letterman: "It'd be like when Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game, you just wrote on there 'JEWTIFUL!' ... I feel like it's very 'Lin-sensitive.'"

Boxer Floyd Mayweather caused headlines earlier in the week by saying Lin is only getting a lot of attention "because he's Asian."

Columnist Jason Whitlock embarrassed Fox Sports with a tweet about Lin playing off Asian stereotypes. On that, the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) sent a letter to Whitlock that read, in part:

"The attempt at humor ... and we hope that is all it was ... fell flat. It also exposed how some media companies fail to adequately monitor the antics of their high-profile representatives. Standards need to be applied ... by you and by Fox Sports.

"The offensive tweet debased one of sports' feel-good moments, not just among Asian Americans but for so many others who are part of your audience.

"Where do we go from here? How about an apology, Mr. Whitlock."

Whitlock apologized, and the AAJA thanked him for that.

The comparisons between Lin & Tebow are virtually non-existent to the point of almost being complete opposites. The only real link between the two is that both are apparently religious although that aspect, while part of the Tebow phenomenon, has nothing to do with Lin's fame.
The only other similarity comes from those who think that the quantity of mentions on ESPN is enough to count as a similarity.

The trick is figuring out when a passing reference to his heritage becomes an insensitive stereotype.

It tore me up when making the Proposed Stupid Nicknames list above. I was willing to go with what I saw as neutral references like "The Oriental Express" and "The Manchurian Candidate," but I stayed away from belittling stuff like "The Delivery Boy" or "Numba One Son."

The problem is, if you really want to be funny (and I only sorta did) then the guy who gets the attention is the one willing to dance as close to that fire as possible and risk getting burned. We're in a frenzied multimedia race to be the cleverest, so a few of those guys are definitely going to fall right into the volcano.

he's better able to FINISH with his right, but so are most RHed players. He can still go left and make plays. This is a non-issue. As far as the TOs go, running an aggressive offense will result in more TOs. And playing with fatigue can, too. As long as he's got at least a 2:1 Assist:TO ratio going, he's doing ok, and he's likely to deal with less fatigue when Anthony takes on more of the scoring burden and if B.Davis comes back to play backup PG minutes. If he's got a serious flaw, its an inconsistent outside shot, which simply means he's not Chris Paul, but he can still be a better than average Tony Parker-type PG. This is unlike Tebow, who has proven he simply cannot run a standard NFL offense and so they had to tailor one to suit his more limited skill set.

NYPOST:
ESPN used a shockingly racist headline "Chink in the Armor" for the Knicks' loss Friday night, along with a picture of Jeremy Lin, who is an Asian-American. The headline was eventually removed, and ESPN issued an apology late this morning.
"Last night, ESPN.com’s mobile web site posted an offensive headline referencing Jeremy Lin at 2:30 am ET. The headline was removed at 3:05 am ET. We are conducting a complete review of our cross-platform editorial procedures and are determining appropriate disciplinary action to ensure this does not happen again. We regret and apologize for this mistake."

Somebody - or several somebodies - have to get canned over this one.
If ESPN is going to play the PC-card to the point where Harold Reynolds gets fired for hugging an intern and Tony Kornheiser gets slapped with a two-week suspension for suggesting (not even on an ESPN forum) that Hannah Storm's wardrobe wasn't exactly flattering for someone her age, then this stunt deserves a firing squad.

Statement on offensive comments

At ESPN we are aware of three offensive and inappropriate comments made on ESPN outlets during our coverage of Jeremy Lin.

Saturday we apologized for two references. We have since learned of a similar reference Friday on ESPN Radio New York. The incidents were separate and different. We have engaged in a thorough review of all three and have taken the following action:

• The ESPN employee responsible for our Mobile headline has been dismissed.

• The ESPNEWS anchor has been suspended for 30 days.

• The radio commentator is not an ESPN employee.

We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin. His accomplishments are a source of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN. Through self-examination, improved editorial practices and controls, and response to constructive criticism, we will be better in the future.
