Violin dubstep. On ice!

This Belgian guy Gotye (pronounced hilariously by my little brother as "Goat-Eye") has another single on the charts but I am digging some of his non-single album tracks. This one includes crazy ass animation, always a plus.

Nigerian singer-songwriter Nneka. From funk to dub to R&B to polyrhythmic rock, this is a clown car of good stuff, driven by her voice.

Lovely music track, but the lyric is sort of just an essay read against it with deference to the chord changes.

Is this a good song, or do I hold some peculiar bias towards it?
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Apr 06 2012 08:06 AM Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition |
I like that song too, as Stevie Nicks songs go anyway. Suffers a bit from the Big 80s production style, which really ruined her 'Rock a Little' LP (that and the drugs). But nice big hook on that one.

That's so archetypal it's hard to believe it's not a joke. I guess it is but...

The Dirty Projectors sound kind of Beatlesque. Perhaps a lost track from the Magical Mystery Tour / White Album era.

For whatever reason this morning I've been listening to the sketchy 1980s output of Blue Oyster Cult, including Buck Dharma's 1982 solo album (which I liked!).

Yeah, this thread sucks because nobody bothers to participate. The answer to the above un-guessed-at trivia question was "Ian Hunter," btw.
|
The Second Spitter Jul 31 2012 07:56 AM Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition |

I still can't locate the Ian Hunter trivia question. I've always had a soft spot for Warrant only because my sis dragged to me to one of their concerts in my youth (iirc it was my second concert ever after Bon Jovi) and I thought at the time it was a mind-blowing experience. Then I picked-up the newspaper the next day and it said the concert was shite. But they've got some good stuff, "Down Boys", "Mr Rainmaker", "Love in Stereo". Ok, maybe I should have said "some above-average stuff." Yes, more contribution to this thread would be appreciated. To make this thread more conversational, can I propose that in order to post a song, you must comment on the previous song. (We had a similar rule in the jukebox of time thread, which was awesome)

'The Only Place' by Best Coast. Californians goof around, break stuff and play a pretty catchy tune. I should have put this one up when the Mets were out there.
|
Swan Swan H Aug 10 2012 01:42 PM Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition |
'Little Talks' by Of Monsters and Men. There is an instrumental bit that has become background music for a number of ads and TV segments. The video has nothing, as far as I can tell, to do with the lyrics of the song, but a lot to do with a director who watched plenty of MTV in the early '90s.
|
Swan Swan H Aug 11 2012 11:57 AM Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition |
'Ho Hey' by The Lumineers. Yes, you've probably heard it before, on an ad or a TV show. This will likely be the wedding song for our son's best friend next year. Also notable for being among the few (or perhaps the only) popular songs to make reference to the Fung Wah bus.

Like this Lumineers song. Still getting a lot of airplay on 107.1 The Peak here in New York.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Aug 13 2012 07:59 AM Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition |
Lumineers' song already sounds like a cellphone commercial. Or maybe an Apple commercial. Some kind of commercial. But I like it too.

Adorable. Like, this should be playing on whatever-is-today's-Dawson's Creek as modern-day-Pacey and modern-day-Joey hook up for the first time, at water's edge. (And I only mean that, like, 20% snarky. I liked it.)

'Nothing Left' by Girlyman. Very low budget video, but I really like these guys, and have since I first saw them at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in 2002. I usually prefer the songs where Ty (dark grey shirt, necktie) sings lead, but this may be my favorite of Nate's songs.

The Sea The Sea (Mira Stanley and Chuck E. Costa) with a live version of Chuck's 'Restless Heart' and Townes Van Zandt's 'If you Needed Me.' I like Chuck's solo stuff a lot, but their voices together make me swoony. Just the thing to ease the pain of a four-game home sweep by the dregs of the NL West.

Twenty years ago today, Thunder's "Laughing On Judgement Day" was released, blowing my 16-year-old mind. Distinctly remember reading a track-by-track preview in one of the metal mags (Circus? Metal Edge?), thinking "wow, this sounds amazing," and buying this disc in the record store of the old Sears mall in Commack/Elwood. Album cover designed by the legendary Storm Thorgerson. Fourteen tracks, and they're all brilliant. What I would give to have seen these guys live just once... urgh.
|
Swan Swan H Aug 26 2012 06:36 AM Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition |
Oh boy, I had completely forgotten about this one until John Platt played it this morning on WFUV. Arlon Bennett's "Summer's Voice" is a tribute to the man himself, Bob Murphy. They actually played this at the stadium years ago when they honored Murph.

"End of Summer Cigarettes" by John Elliott, to mark the unofficial end of summer. Lyrics after the video, as the quality is not great. I'm stage left somewhere, one of about 60 people in a room that comfortably seats 25.

That's a great song. I like how long they take to get the chorus the first time. It moves but not in a hurry.

For my money, one of the best post-9/11 song out there. It is set in the days after 9/11 (specifically the first rainy day after the attacks), and in the spring of 2002.

Mets – Willets Point Sep 17 2012 03:02 PM Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition |
"Hold on When You Get Love and Let Go When you Give It" by Stars is my new favorite song probably because it reminds me of a 1980s synthpop track with a Kate Bush-style vocalist joining in near the end of the song.

Love both tracks (the Stars a little more, gun to head).
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Sep 18 2012 09:32 AM Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition |
I don't know if they broke up so much as stopped existing, as for some reason they never sold a billion albums despite their first album deserving that many. They made a second album that wasn't as good as the first and that was that for them.

OK, so, this is from 2008 and not 2012. But still, nice little post-Seattle alt-rock groove. Their second record, released in 2010 is much happier and "poppier" than this debut, which has several tracks of this style.

"Old Coats" by Barnaby Bright, a married couple from Kansas now living in Brooklyn. I know these guys pretty well, absolute sweethearts. They were nervous as hell, they said, while filming this. The video is set at Deepwell's Mansion in St. James, NY.

It took two months for me to give a listen but I really like this. Strange to write this, but the weak part may be Charlie Watts. The rest of the track is much heavier than anything he has to offer, at least anymore. On the other hand, Mick hasn't sounded so good since I don't know when. Super Heavy indeed.
Bouncy fun, three vocalists, two of them female. The dude, on the other hand, rather than evoking Fred, can't not make a person think of Hairy Spin Doctors Guy
