This Belgian guy Gotye (pronounced hilariously by my little brother as "Goat-Eye") has another single on the charts but I am digging some of his non-single album tracks. This one includes crazy ass animation, always a plus.

Dexy's Midnight Runners, now known just as Dexys, released their first new song in 27 years "Nowhere is Home."

I like the melody but find the vocals distracting. It would probably sound better as a Hot House Flowers song with Liam Ó Maonlaí singing.

Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition

Lovely music track, but the lyric is sort of just an essay read against it with deference to the chord changes.

I'm a Dexy's defender. I've followed and reviewed their career before and after their brief peak. To a lesser extent, Rowland's too. But it's been akin to watching a hacker in the box. The homers can make you lament more the thoughtlessness behind all the wild swings and misses in between.

Dexy's Midnight Runners: my rock 'n' roll Dave Kingman.

I like that song too, as Stevie Nicks songs go anyway. Suffers a bit from the Big 80s production style, which really ruined her 'Rock a Little' LP (that and the drugs). But nice big hook on that one.

Jim Marshall, who founded the amplifiers bearing his name, passed away. Here's a big dumb RAWK song referencing him (I think)

For whatever reason this morning I've been listening to the sketchy 1980s output of Blue Oyster Cult, including Buck Dharma's 1982 solo album (which I liked!).

It's all incredibly uneven, and you never know what you're gonna get.

Can you guess from listening to this name-dropping party anthem off the "Revolution by Night" album who the celebrity co-writer is?

Yeah, this thread sucks because nobody bothers to participate. The answer to the above un-guessed-at trivia question was "Ian Hunter," btw.

I never listened to Warrant enough to distinguish them from a dozen other bands who to me looked and sounded just like them, but in general recognize what they're doing as an overproduced, heavier version of power pop.

I still can't locate the Ian Hunter trivia question.

I've always had a soft spot for Warrant only because my sis dragged to me to one of their concerts in my youth (iirc it was my second concert ever after Bon Jovi) and I thought at the time it was a mind-blowing experience. Then I picked-up the newspaper the next day and it said the concert was shite. But they've got some good stuff, "Down Boys", "Mr Rainmaker", "Love in Stereo". Ok, maybe I should have said "some above-average stuff."

Yes, more contribution to this thread would be appreciated. To make this thread more conversational, can I propose that in order to post a song, you must comment on the previous song. (We had a similar rule in the jukebox of time thread, which was awesome)

'Little Talks' by Of Monsters and Men. There is an instrumental bit that has become background music for a number of ads and TV segments. The video has nothing, as far as I can tell, to do with the lyrics of the song, but a lot to do with a director who watched plenty of MTV in the early '90s.

Twenty years ago today, Thunder's "Laughing On Judgement Day" was released, blowing my 16-year-old mind. Distinctly remember reading a track-by-track preview in one of the metal mags (Circus? Metal Edge?), thinking "wow, this sounds amazing," and buying this disc in the record store of the old Sears mall in Commack/Elwood. Album cover designed by the legendary Storm Thorgerson. Fourteen tracks, and they're all brilliant. What I would give to have seen these guys live just once... urgh.

Oh boy, I had completely forgotten about this one until John Platt played it this morning on WFUV. Arlon Bennett's "Summer's Voice" is a tribute to the man himself, Bob Murphy. They actually played this at the stadium years ago when they honored Murph.

This is the only clip I could find of the whole song, from a local access TV program. Skip to 6:40 to get to the song. They cut away for credits near the end, but the music continues and they do get the whole song in. Perfect for a day when the greedy bastards on both sides are keeping the telecast of today's game away from many of us.

Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition

Haven't even listened to it yet, but I went to the guy's site and tossed him a dollar just for the sentiment. Downloading now.

http://music.arlonbennett.com/track/summers-voice

The radio booth is silent where the jets pass overhead
a million grownups say their childhood is dead
there were times I listened to every word he said
ahhh... was summer’s voice

The hometown uncle I never had
brought the gift of baseball since I was a lad
always sounding good even when my team was bad
ahhh... was summer’s voice

CHORUS
Summer’s voice was sweet in the car or on the beach
painting yet another game
and it was automatic
to want to listen through the static
just to hear his play by play
so much more than a pastime score
ahhhh... was summer’s voice

Late summer nights when I was ten years old
We’d play the Dodgers on the west coast
and underneath my pillow with the radio playing low
ahhh... was summer’s voice

CHORUS

So here’s the happy recap to a life well spent
I hope you fastened your seatbelt at the very end
’cause now you’re doing games for Casey,
Gil, and all the rest
ahh... was summer’s voice
there it goes!
ahh... was summer’s voice

"End of Summer Cigarettes" by John Elliott, to mark the unofficial end of summer. Lyrics after the video, as the quality is not great. I'm stage left somewhere, one of about 60 people in a room that comfortably seats 25.

"I was fine until I saw her in a dress." Simple, but perfect.

[youtube:32dpnkh6]sdZiMJhrkQA[/youtube:32dpnkh6]

End of summer cigarettes, undercover backyard bets,
Next to me the music plays, next to her it’s better,
Candy bars and shooting stars, endless fog and endless cars,
I let her fall asleep so she wouldn’t catch me lookin’,
I was fine until I saw her in a dress the week of end of summer cigarettes…

An old friend came to visit me, I didn’t see her comin’,
When I breathed her it was something like a high school football game,
We took turns, we looked for signs, I knew that she would have to leave,
I knew that we just couldn’t be together anymore,
I showed her out, I shut the door and I was fine,
Another life, another time,
I showed her out, I shut the door and I was fine

Wild in the evergreens, I met her there, I saw her knees,
I saw her shoes outside my tent, we both went straight to sleep
End of summer cigarettes, long forgotten dreamed regrets,
I know that we will meet another time, I’ll be clean and she’ll be free,
She’ll spend another night with me and I won’t let her fall asleep

I was fine until I saw her in a dress the week of end of summer cigarettes…
I was fine until I saw her in a dress.

"Old Coats" by Barnaby Bright, a married couple from Kansas now living in Brooklyn. I know these guys pretty well, absolute sweethearts. They were nervous as hell, they said, while filming this. The video is set at Deepwell's Mansion in St. James, NY.

Barnaby Bright play at our UU fellowship's coffeehouse series sometimes. Very engaging, entertaining show.

I was at both of them - the co-bill with Caleb Hawley, and their solo headline show. I'll be back in January for Carolann Solebello and February for Phil Minissale.

It took two months for me to give a listen but I really like this.

Strange to write this, but the weak part may be Charlie Watts. The rest of the track is much heavier than anything he has to offer, at least anymore. On the other hand, Mick hasn't sounded so good since I don't know when. Super Heavy indeed.

Bouncy fun, three vocalists, two of them female.

The dude, on the other hand, rather than evoking Fred, can't not make a person think of Hairy Spin Doctors Guy

Mira Stanley and Chuck E. Costa with a beauty for the holidays. They did this as an encore when they played at my house on December 2, and it was just wonderful, if you will.

Re: Track of the Day, Leap Year Edition

How good does that track have to be to completely steal the riff from the band's previous single and still turn out to be a classic piece of hot wax?

That was pretty common for bands in creative handcuffs in the sixties. After "Hang on, Sloopy," the McCoys might release a version of "Fever," because it was already in the label's publishing catalog, but it would have the same lick from "Hang on, Sloopy," or The Champs might release a version of "Frosty the Snowman" at Christmastime, but it would have the Tequila riff backing it up, silghtly changed to fit the Frosty changes. The band might get one more minor hit out the self-referencing ripoff track, but then would fade into obscurity and derision as a one-trick pony.

That the Kinks were able to rip themselves off and make something as good as or possibly better is a tribute to somebody... the producer, or possibly Ray for getting a different and equally interesting lyric and screaming vocal, or possibly Dave for getting a better and more distorted guitar solo.

The used that riff once more, of course, years later for "Destroyer."
