They miss you Simon

... because apparently they've sub-contracted out the only real critiquing to Jimmy Iovine. So I flicked on American Idol for about 30 minutes earlier tonight - I guess they're in their first live week and it's the big cut-down night from like 20-something down to the final dozen or so - and, as Seabiscuit is doing his results schtick, they're showing snippets from last night's performances plus the comments from the judges. And according to Randy, JLo & Tyler: EVERYONE IS GREAT!!! Each contestant looks great, sounds great, has tons of passion, and star quality out the wazoo! About the worst thing anyone said about anyone - aside from Randy mentioning that "it was a bit pitchy in spots" of course - was that; 'well, I think maybe that wasn't the best song choice for you', and even then they'd soothe the hurt with the old Paula-code for it stunk; "you look pretty". It wasn't until they cut to Iovine for his take on each performance that you finally heard phrases resembling, 'that wasn't very good', 'I didn't hear a star out there', 'borderline karaoke', or, 'he/she doesn't deserve to move on'. Problem is that he's saying these things off-stage, on tape, is probably not even in the building at that point, and can't influence the voting because it had already taken place 24 hours ago.

This show jumped the shark years ago, but I saw a few guys sing on Tuesday. It's crueler to make the fat receptionist from Florida think he has a shot than to tell him the truth, probably. I liked that gospel singer from Louisiana but it's not like America desperately needs one of those to win a contest today.

Haven't watched it at all this season, didn't care for these judges last season, and like FK said they love everyone.....and I'll add to that the creepy 63 year old Steven Tyler ogling 15 year old girls is a real turn off.......actually I did see a snippet this season , it was Tyler making suggestive comments to the daughter of MLB analyst Joe Magrane when she auditioned.

Tune in to watch people tell a fat guy that he doesn't have enough charasma for people to love him. We're looking for a certain je nai se WOW!. But somebody gets a shortcut to the gold ring. And they go on to a career of making dreadfully empty music, but their hair is always spectacular Fuck it. If you want to sing out, sing out.
