Re: You Make the Call: Johan Santana

This may be the hardest one on the list.

I think he'll have a 3.4 ERA or so, but I'm at a loss for how many strikeouts/starts he'll have. Projecting even 25 seems crazy optimistic..on the other hand, he's still standing..

I need some time..

Re: You Make the Call: Johan Santana

12-9, 3.33, 171 IP, just qualifiying for the ERA title.

He'll pitch better than his record, but he'll be pulled from too many games too early to secure la victoire, and will fall victim to his pen and to his manager's kid gloves.

Santana throwing his normal bullpen, and the report is that it's so routine that only two reporters are watching.

Re: You Make the Call: Johan Santana

I think he'll still start off the season a little rusty, so he'll have some "That's not where I wanted to throw that pitch" moments, especially with the new outfield dimensions. But I also think the offense will be able to keep him in the game (and away from the bullpen) longer, especially when he's on a roll.
31 GS 15-10 3.56 ERA 187 IP.

The best sign will be when no one tells us about his bullpens.

Re: You Make the Call: Johan Santana

13-6, 3.46, 170.1 IP, 165 K

I think he's very good most games, with some blips here and there. I think the offense actually bails him out of a couple.

Re: You Make the Call: Johan Santana

I'm predicting something close to his 2009 stats:

25 starts, 166.2 IP, 13-9, 3.13 ERA, 146 K, 46 BB

That would be nice since they've lost him more than a few over the years.

Re: You Make the Call: Johan Santana

13-8, 3.40, 180 IP

It's funny that given how huge the error bars have to be, we all seem to be looking for (and would very happily take, I'd imagine) a safe middle.

That's Roy Oswalt's line last year, Johan's "most similar by age"

Re: You Make the Call: Johan Santana

5-7 over the first half, with an ERA hovering around 4; shows enough for the Mets to move him by the July deadline; they work out a deal over the all-star break where they eat 1/2 his remaining $$ and get back a B prospect, but he blows out his arm again just before the deal goes down. Mets have to buy him out after the season. He comes back in 3 years in Minny as "comeback player of the year". Then he screws Pridie's wife.

He's back! 15-11, has once special afternoon where he deals the first no-hitter in team history.

Wow, Mich. You've got Johan at 15-11 and Niese at 17-10. And they're pitching for a team that many expect will lose 85-90 games this season.

Re: You Make the Call: Johan Santana

Well, I think we're going to be better than "most expect."

Today's developments in court lift a huge black cloud over this franchise. Sure, it's about six months late. I'm not saying we win the pennant. But I'll settle for the old "meaningful games in September" line this year.

Remember, they weren't that far from .500 last season. Now they'll get Ike, Murphy, Wright and Santana back and have a closer, even if he does allow a stolen base or two or 10.

I'm an optimist, no doubt.

Of course, there's a chicken-egg aspect here: If Niese and Johan go a combined 32-21, the Mets probably lose less than 85 games.

Santana breezes through fourth start

***

Santana’s changeup appeared in prime form all afternoon. He twice struck out Freese on pitches that caused the Cardinal's bat to go flying into foul territory down the third-base line -- once on a slider, once on a changeup.

"I threw some good ones out there. When I'm able to set everything up, and throw my fastballs and mix my changeups, sometimes that happens," Santana said about the bat-flying episodes. "I'm pretty sure he was trying to hit a ball and I threw the right pitch and he swung and missed. It's good to see those swings sometimes."

gee, Johan, ya think? what tipped you off? His presence in the batter's box with, ya know, a bat?

Here's a good over/under. 128 more (so 133?) strikeouts for Johan Santana on the season. That's the number he needs for 2000.

I just noticed this prediction that Michigan made on March 19, 2012.
