Memories of Tobi Stoner

Tobi was Met in 2009 and 2010 and... and an organizational specter since then --- you turn and think you saw him, but maybe not, and briefly remember that he once was, and then your thoughts turn to more pressing matters.

But Tobi once was indeed. And now he is no more, released by the team today along with LHPs Chris Hiliard, Eric Niesen, and Roy Merritt; RHPs Nick Carr, Ronny Morla, and Steve Winnick; 1B Lucas Stewart; and OF Chase Greene.

Pretty athletic dude anyhow:

He was no Dennis Bennett.

He had a reputation for being a dick but I don't remember why precisely. I think Billy Wagner might have felt he didn't know his place or something.

Anyone?

Wore No. 29, and not as good as Steve Traschsel.

Great name, but I don't have much else to remember him by.

Re: Memories of Tobi Stoner

Here's a funky trip through the wayback machine. Tobi's debut was pretty much 2009 in a nutshell, throwing a scoreless mopup inning against Flawridah in a game in which the Mets were clobbered, 13-4. That day also featured (1) Johan Santana getting stitches removed from his elbow, (2) Gary Sheffield returning to batting practice, and (3) Elmer Dessens getting his Range Rover stolen after leaving it with a hotel valet near Citi Field.

The day started with a clubhouse fundies meeting in which Jerry Manuel stressed what he called "Championship Baseball" and others might call "keeping your head in the game." Angel Pagan responded by going out and making two baserunning mistakes, including getting doubled off of second on a Jeff Francouer flyout, when he forgot how many outs there were.

All the while, everybody was wearing pizza logos on their sleeves.

He may have been the first Brooklyn Cyclone to make it to the majors.

Wasn't, that was Danny Whatshisname in 2003.

When I think of Tobi Stoner, I inevitably think of Toby Beau.

And when I think of Toby Beau, I inevitably think of Walter Egan.

Both were hits in August of 1978, and I can't help but think Tobi Stoner would have given up a few hits back then, too, if he were mopping up behind Dale Murray.

You're right, infielder Danny Garcia.
I genuflect to your awesomeness.

Disporoportionatley high number of Mets baseball cards relative to his contributions. Pedro Feliciano, by comparison, didn't appear on more than half a dozen cards for all of his innings pitched over almost 10 years, and back then, there were about a dozen card companies licensed to print.

The northeast photo is clearly the same as the southeast one. Why would the watercolorist paint the white jersey blue? Ugh. Not even Tobi Stoner is safe.

I'm guessing that it was to have Tobi in a period correct Mets uniform to match the 1985 style Topps card.

Re: Memories of Tobi Stoner

Maybe, but goofy. I guess there should be stirrups and/or piping on the Tobi in the southwest.

I conflate him with the Mets reliever who got caught doing bong hits in spring training. Grant Roberts maybe?
