New National Holidays

Inspired by Methead:

*The Monday after Super Bowl Sunday - "Super Bowl Monday"
*The first two days of the NCAA tournament "March Madness"
*The first Monday of April "Opening Day". Every team plays a day game to start the season. If your team is rained out, the holiday extends to Tuesday. If you're rained out again on Tuesday, you have to go back to work on Wednesday but you can take a break while the game is on.

How are these not already in effect?

I could take or leave the first two. Really, Super Bowl Sunday should be Saturday. It just should be.

Obviously Opening Day, but what do you do for the away teams? Gotta have another holiday for the home Opener? Would this be a problem in NY if scheduled forced Yankees and Mets to have different Openers?

Another one: Repeal Day. December 5th, to celebrate the ratification of the 21st amendment. It's like St. Patrick's Day without the Irish Stereotypes, instead it's an _American_ holiday steeped in national history. HBO can air a Boardwalk Empire marathon.

I like this one.

I also think Patriot's Day - celebrated in Massachusetts and Maine to mark the beginning of the American Revolution - should be celebrated nationally.

Day baseball, a Marathon, They certainly have some fun with that one.

Couple of suggestions:

- Vice Presidents Day -- because if you can't celebrate the careers of Spiro Agnew, Dan Quayle, and John Nance Garner ... well then what's the point of being an American, right?

- March Mudness -- When you just have to take off work because the final snow melt has left your lawn so soggy that you don't want to get your shoes all messed up

- Al Albour Day -- Sure he's not even an American by birth, but he is the last man to coach a team in this country to four consecutive championships. The wearing of nerdy glasses on this day is optional.

May 10: March on Richmond and treat the locals terribly on The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Day.

June 6: Crash toll gates across America at 88 miles per hour on Convoy Day.

September 3: Pay tribute that jack-of-all-trades with no fixed address in your life on Papa Was a Rolling Stone Day.

Don't forget battle reenactments at five in the morning.

Oh, I thought that was just the university students getting home from the bars.

We have a National Holiday centred around a horse race. Beat that.

There were convoys on an historic June 6, carrying our troops to Normandy Beach on D-Day. And I don't think any of those ships could make it up to 88 MPH.
