The Mets continue to enjoy the home environs, welcoming the 2-1 Nats --- looking to grab a slice of that first place pie --- for a mid-week series. Mike Pelfrey makes his 2012 debut locking up against Edwin Jackson. EJ is a German-born righthander with the good face who went 12-9/3.79 in 2011, splitting the season between the Cards and the White Sox. It was the second straight season he endured a mid-season trade. He's on a one-year deal with Washington, so a third such deal isn't out of the question. I may have missed this, it being EAster and all, but I assume Francisco is unavailable for saving games tomorrow. rauch then? Ramirez? Bobby?

If you followed Rubin, you'd know it's Rauch, then... a bit of a surprise. According to Collins, 41-year-old long man Miguel Batista should get the assignment. Batista had five saves in six chances for Aguilas in the Dominican Republic during the winter league season.

That's a real nice win. It's early and they're playing hard and smart. Finding it easy to root for this team.

Not sure we deserved to win that game -- got out-hit, so-so starting pitching, we got a couple of generous calls on the bases & at the plate -- but that's why it's nice that we did.

I was glad Collins let Kirk hit against the Meiskite* (that's "ugly one" in Yiddish) lefty. Even though he made an out, he hit a line drive, taking the pitch the other way. He may have lost an inning, but he gave the kid confidence that he won't be automatically jerked out of there against lefties. Then, he hit for him with Hairston later in the game. Oh well ...
