Re: KTE - Nationals 4/9-4/11

Wilson Ramos is off to a slow start behind the dish, with two hits in 10 at-bats against the Cubbies in their opening series. He has one passed ball and has caught one of five Cubs who've attempted to steal bases. Davey Johnson said he was pleased with Flores' spring following his kidnapping ordeal this winter.

Backup Jesus Flores did not appear in the Chicago series and so may get a start against the Mets. Injuries have limited him to just 59 games the last three seasons. But the mind of Davey is elusive on this issue, but he refers to him as "Flo," which can't be good for a fella's self-confidence.

Cubs seemingly made their share of outs on the bases, which tells me the Nats are playing crisp ball.

What does first base look like?

Re: KTE - Nationals 4/9-4/11

The eternal Adam LaRoche had a nice weekend for the Natties, going 5 for 12 with two dingers and 4 RBI's. Head not shown here due to excessive ugliness of player.

Re: KTE - Nationals 4/9-4/11

The Nats didn't particularly hit much in their opening series.
They just got good enough pitching to hang close long enough to wait for Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol to self-destruct in the late innings

Wood faced 9 batters and retired 3 of them. He served up 3 hits, 3 walks (in a row), and tossed in a wild pitch for good measure
Marmol faced 11 hitters and retired all of 4. His line reads 4 hits and 3 walks
Between the two they were on the mound and/or responsible for 7 of the 12 runs the Nats scored over the weekend while logging only 2.1 innings pitched.

With top prospect Anthony Rendon sent down for the spring, and taken down with an ankle injury, second baseman-with-speed-and-pop-and-Rob-Deer-contact rates Danny Espinosa should sleep a little easier... for now.

As for Espinosa's actual performance, this season's (.182/.286/.455, 1 HR, 3 K in 14 PA) more of the same (.231/.316/.419 with 28 HR over just more than a full season) so far. That probably won't keep him ahead of the younger youngster for long without some improvement on the contact or the walking (68 in just under 784 PA). He's like a really athletic wind machine.

Also, he's from SoCal prep school/noted quarterback-slash-douchebag factory Mater Dei, where, apparently, EVERYONE looks like Mark Sanchez and Barry Zito's bastard kid.

Washington shortstop Ian Desmond recently changed his uni # to 20 from his assigned #6 in tribute to Frank Robinson and to establish an identity as a regular with the Nats but his erratic career to date still suggests he's not necessarily going to be a longterm starter.

Here he is with his wifey Chelsey

Left field is a rag-tag collection of unspectacular players Mark DeRosa, old friend Xavier Nady, and Brett Carroll (old Florida Marlin). Those guys all hit and throw right-handed and in no way distinguish themselves from one another in my eyes. The Nats official website also throws the names "S. Lombardozzi" and "C. Tracy" in the left field mix to which I responded, "ZZZzzzzzzzz......" We have Jason Bay. Advantage: PUSH

Re: KTE - Nationals 4/9-4/11

Lombardozzi is a second baseman, like his father, who was on the WS Champion Twins in 1987.

He had a pretty good season in the minors last year: 309/360/460, 8 Homers, 30 steals in a season split between AA and AAA.

He's supposed to be a well regarded prospect but the Nationals have Danny Espinosa at second base currently. Espinosa did hit 21 homers and 29 doubles last year but not much else: 236/323/414, with 166 strikeouts.

Re: KTE - Nationals 4/9-4/11

Ryan Zimmerman had an off season last season, mostly in the HR department. He dealt with injuries, specifically that 6-pack muscle that Wright hurt this spring. They tinkered with his throwing motion coming back from that, and it supposedly messed him up defensively a bit.

He's 1/11 to start the season. He's pushing for his 500th RBI, so maybe that's in his head? Also 50 or so hits from 1000. He's signed to a long term deal through at least 2019, so he'll smash all the DC longevity records. In healthy years Zimmerman is a hight .800s OPS guy, when he has to fight injuries like last year or in 2008, he's dropped below .800.

Re: KTE - Nationals 4/9-4/11

Over at third, Ryan Zimmerman has been the class of the league at the position as David Wright's star has receded, winning two silver sluggers and a gold glove in 2009 and 2010, but sharing Wright's fate last year, losing time and effectiveness to injury, interestingly enough to the same injury that Wright sustained this spring, a tear of the rectus abdominis.

So now, healthy and whole, he's... well, he's been terrible is what he's been. As good as Wright has hit over the first three games, he's hit as poorly, going .091 / .231 / .091 // .322. Not very meaningful, but not the start they wanted to see after his buzzkill year in 2011.

I tend to think there's a conservation of awesome with Wright and Zimmerman, that when one of them excels, the other must recede.

Center fielder Roger Bernandina is from Curacao and once had anal with Fransisco Rodriguez if I remember my history.

I seem to recall Bernadina came up and played pretty poorly but turned the corner with a hot series against the Mets. Pretty ripped torso on that guy, too.

Hey! Has Metsblog used this format before -- or are they lifting ideas from the Pool, right down to the name?

haven't used it before. via Ted Berg:

This year, the Web videos formerly known as The Baseball Show will be called various different things depending on their content. The out-of-town scouting reports are now known as “Know Your Enemy,” which means our video producers will have to stomach a season’s worth of me trying to make Tom Morello guitar noises before and after we film every single time we film, because I’m like that.

Do the Metsblog guys read the Pool?

Indeed, and not the polite kind, either: 2-HR game, with the last being the game-winner off AngryMan.

Also, the given name's Rogearvin Argelo, which is either a family name or a sure sign that his parents resented his birth.

It's not like the Pool invented the phrase Know Thy Enemy. Sun Tzu used the phrase as have countless others. I'm pretty sure it's public domain now.

Re: KTE - Nationals 4/9-4/11

Drew Storen is on his way to see Dr. Andrews, which is almost never a good thing. The team suspects bone spurs. Looks like Henry Rodriguez is going to get a long look at closer.

Also piling up the missed games.
