Top Ten Hitmakers in Mets History

[list=1][*]Ed Kranepool: 1418[/*:m]
[*]José Reyes: 1300[/*:m]
[*]David Wright: 1248[/*:m]
[*]Cleon Jones: 1188[/*:m]

[*]Mookie Wilson: 1112[/*:m]

[*]Darryl Strawberry: 1025[/*:m]
[*]Howard Johnson: 997[/*:m][/list:o]

Pretty dramatic, right? But oh, the drama is thicker than it would seem at first blush. If Wright gets into games at his career rate, he should appear in 149 regular-season contests this season. Assuming that, if he collects his hits at his career rate, he should move past José Reyes into sole possession of second place on the all-time hit list for the Mets. Assuming Reyes hasn't returned to the Mets and continued to add to his hit total, this occurrence should take place in game 51. This should take place on June 1 (weather permitting) , a Friday night and the first of a four-game weekend set against the Cards. Buy tickets now to the whole weekend and you're giving yourself a decent chance to catch some history.

But, assuming he continues, getting into games and getting his hits at his career rate, that could be the last hit milestone he gets to, at least this season. For he would finish the season with 168 hits --- getting him to a career total of 1,416, leaving him two hits short of Kranepool.

TWO!

Re: Where Mets Rank, 2012

Ron mentioned something about that on a broadcast once. Not about being reactivated, but he's very much aware that he had 99 wins as a Met and wishes he had 100.

While they're at it, the Mets could reactivate Tom Seaver too, so that he can get two more.

Santana goes into the evening tied with former-Met Ron Darling and former-Met coach Harvey Haddix in career victories.

T 303) Mike Caldwell: 137

Jack Sanford: 137
T 307) Ron Darling: 136

Johan Santana: 136
Harry Staley: 136
T 311) Ramon Martinez: 135
Joe Nuxhall: 135
Ray Sadecki: 135

Unfortunately, he's only on a pace for 8.34 this season. That would get him up to #282, at 141, tied with Woodie Fryman, Matt Kilroy, Lindy McDaniel, Sam McDowell, and Mike Morgan.

Alex Trevino, John Stearns, Ron Hodges and Butch Benton caught in 1980.

no home runs.

Stearns and Hodges both got 1 a piece in '81.

Then they really turned it on. 5 and 4 in '82 with 2 by Bruce Bochy.

dropped to one by Mike Fitzgerald in '83

Fitz hit two in '84 and Hodges had 1.

I presume I can stop there.

9 by Stearns in '79 (and 15 in '78) That means Mets catchers (well, just the one) hit more home runs (32) in '85 than in the entire period from '79-'84

Re: Where Mets Rank, 2012

Zero in 1980. John Stearns hurt his elbow, and only got a half year in, and in the games he did get into, he didn't get any loft on the ball. Alex Treviño, Ron Hodges, and Butch Benton, given a chance to pick him up, didn't.

All that would have been awful on it's own, but what really sealed it was that they didn't get any homers from any of their shorstops or secondbasemen that year either. They totaled a Marisesque 61 --- almost all of those coming from the outfield.

Home runs hit, by position, in 1980. There are a few cases where a player played more than one outfield position in a game in which he homered. I neglected to determine which position he was playing at the time he hit the home run. Either way, we have 16 homers from the infield, 41 from the outfield, and 4 from pinch hitters.

Wow, and a good chance to join the top ten in his last start.

I wonder if he'll make that last start. He has his 20 wins, and he threw 128 pitches today. I wouldn't be surprised if Terry sat him. (Or at least pulled him after five innings.)

Skipping Dickey against the Marlins? Might as well rip a win from his record. He's got a Respected Award to win.

As I said earlier, I would be surprised to see him start Monday and grab an inning or two of relief on Wednesday if it would give him a chance to grab an extra win.

This would leave a bunt-single-then-leave-the-game taste in my mouth.

Re: Where Mets Rank, 2012

Really? I wouldn't blame the voters for not putting too much stock in it, but I see entering a game you're not supposed to be in as being very different from fleeing a game you are supposed to be in. He came out of the pen for an inning in game 161 in 2010, just 'cuz he could.

Anyhow, looks like he's expected to go Tuesday, so it's unlikely to happen.

Yeah, kind of an in-game rush job there
